Carol Swarr Freshmen I fS WAY p 1 1 ACTIVITIES Change We honor the symbols of tradition, but mainly as reminders of our responsibility for progress. Boise-Cascade Company Meredith in a world of change SGA President Suzanne Wright . . . instigator of change, advocate of progress, mediator between forces In our generation there is one constant thing — change. Meredith is constantly touched by things outside the hallowed gates on Hillsborough Street. Consequently, the Meredith girl is forever changing and increasing her knowledge and understanding of world affairs. Sometimes things happen that seem to crush the image she has formulated of the wonderful world we live in. In June 1968, Robert Francis Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles only moments after Proclaiming his victory in the California Democratic residential Primary. The Meredith girl feels sorrow over this loss of a promising young leader with whom she has more or less grown up. Perhaps she can use the knowledge she is gaining at Meredith to further the causes for which this man died. With the Russian occupation of Czechoslovakia in August, Meredith feels a need to intensify the dorm and Beehive discussions on world situations. Prior to November 5, 1968 many dormitory doors proudly wore picture-posters of Hubert Humphrey and Bob Scott, or Richard Nixon and Jim Gardner. Even a few boasted of George Wallace, the independent candidate for President. For the first time some Meredith girls cast a vote, and sat glued to the T V to watch Richard Nixon squeak by to become the 37th President of the United States, and Bob Scott take over the N. C. Governor ' s post. Even as the Apollo 8 astronauts were orbiting and photographing the moon, Meredith and America rejoiced to learn that the prisoners of the U. S. Intelligence ship Pueblo were released by the Koreans and sent home to their anxious families. By the first of the new year, the Meredith girl was checking the weather report in Havana before boarding an airplane — the fad seemed to be hijacking planes to Cuba. On the Meredith front bells ring continuously as the new telephones in the dorm rooms are put to good use. A new rowboat appears in the lake to the delight of the Meredith girls and NCSU boys. The horizon is enhanced by the beautiful new Carlisle Campbell Library which is stacked with books by the Meredith Community in a mass book-in prior to the informal opening on Meredith girl wonders if she will get to room there next year. Other new things which intrigue and excite her are movies on campus, extended radius, no signing-out on dorm cards during the day, and most of all, no Saturday classes. Dean Fleming and her staff announce that the 10-mile radius will now be 15, that if going to town during the day signing-out may be eliminated, and that home-only cards may be usee! during the week. These announcements are heard amidst cheers and screams of delight from the Merdith Community. Even louder cheers are heard on Friday nights because the Meredith girl may now sleep later on Saturday morning, thanks to the faculty and administration. Becket, Cleopatra, Goodbye Charlie, and The Adventures of a Young Man appear on the Jones Auditorium movie screen as the Concert and Lectures Committee initiates its Flick ' 68 program - one that will surely be continued. Space movies 2001: A Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes come across effectively on the screen, but the Meredith girl remembers Camelot and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter as the big box office hits. And she will never forget crowding around the new color TVs in each dorm to watch Rowan and Martin ' s Laugh-In. The musical Meredith girl and her non-musical roommate both remember Richard Harris ' MacArthur Park as the big single hit, but they wonder still who left the cake out in the rain. Glen Campbell ' s Witchita Lineman and Archie Bell and the Drells ' Showdown also hold top positions on the list. The Psychedelic craze is still clamped tightly on the world, and Meredith exhibits evidence of it. Posters, music, colors, clothes and language are just a tinge of Psychedelia USA. Turtleneck sweaters, shirts, dresses and T-shirts appear alongside mini-skirts, midi-skirts, maxi-skirts and bell-bottoms. Professors fascinate the Meredith girls by sporting long sideburns and mustaches. All in all, Meredith and the world are changing rapidly — improvement — advancement — progress - beauty. For many things, 1968-1969 has provided a beginning. Christmas caroling (better known as Spreading the Hong Kong ) . . and of course Play Day with its traditional Faculty-Student fun . These major events marked a busy year for the Meredith Recreation Association of which every student is a member. Board members worked hard to encourage athletics, primarily through the basketball, tennis, and volleyball teams, and to sponsor campus fun. Failures at fund-raising (Popcorn, anyone?!) . . . How do we have it? Why do we want it? Is it worth the bother? These were a few of the questions raised on the recent MCA retreat, September 7-10, at Lake Norman. The MCA theme for the year was taken from Reuel Howe ' s book The Miracle of Dialogue which explains the im- portance of real one-to-one com- munication for living together productively and creatively. The book at best can reflect the experiences and attitudes of a college year. To most people it is merely a picture book, a collection of faces that is given a brief perusal and then relegated to the shelf. A yearbook should be an accurate account of the history made by a student body in a year. This is what we have attempted to do with the 1969 Oak Leaves. Ideally it depicts the action of the year, not just people with potential to act. There have been obvious difficulties and handicaps in attempting to catch people in actual situations rather than posed facsimiles. We think it has been worth the effort. The endless hours of lay-out, typing, photography, and writing are no longer important now that the finished product is in your hands. The important thing now is you, the reader. You were the vitality that inspired the book, and the book will live if you are pleased with it. Thank you for the opportunity to publish an idea. We hope you enjoy it. Included in it were various faculty and staff members just as unsure, with just as many adjustments to make. The freshman class of students held a special affinity with them, with one in particular. One similar in size and background to the others — a petite young lady from Virginia was nothing extraordinary in a freshman class. She, like the rest had been chosen for her peculiar abilities and potential. The students recognized in her easy smile and quiet, unassuming manner a friend in whom they could confide. She has lent a willing ear to many a problem in four years, and stuck her neck out for someone on more than one occasion. Just as the Class of ' 69 has grown to take more responsibilities, so has this particular member in assuming the role of Dean of Summer School. With a special feeling for the senior class, she made available to us job placement booklets and occupational interests tests. For Christmas she entertained us with a coffee hour. Throughout that week, though, and all the ones that followed, we made new friends and shared old ones. Corn Huskin ' and Stunt unified us as a class and we showed Meredith what the Freshmen could do. Happy and sad events followed — D and F slips — a good blind date — call downs for dorm card mistakes — an A on a slaved-over term paper. There were other experiences, too; they are recorded in our hearts, and make us proud of Meredith and ready to move on — to learn. PEP Abner, Judy Arnette. ' • iOU can really turn it on . . . and keep it on. Penny shaves, penny shoe shines. Electricity makes it all possible. With a penny ' s worth of electricity, you can shave every day for a year. Or toast 40 slices of bread. Or listen to a radio an hour a day for a week. Fact is, today you can get about twice as much electricity for your dollar as people did 30 years ago. Your electric bill probably isn ' t just pennies — but then think of all the lights you use, toast you make and TV you watch (not to mention clothes you wash, rugs you vacuum and teeth you brush.) Electricity. It ' s a real value, no matter how much you use or how you use it. Carolina Power Light Company Congratulations and Best Wishes Hudson @Re[fi it ' s your store too!
