You have devoted four years to an office that was not here before you came. You have given your very self to that job; and for that reason, it is an extension of you. You have been genuinely interested in each of us; and from you we have learned to accept ourselves and each other. Where we have been apathetic, you have — with determi- nation, yet not without a gentle concern — sought to make us care. From you we learned that no human belief is too sacred to question, but more importantly, that no person, regard- less of belief, should be ignored or despised. You have led us into new and meaningful worship experi- ences. Indeed, the totality of your religion has said to us, all life is God ' s good gift. Let us affirm its joys, its pains, its routing, its ecstasy. You have said to us that if our school, a small Christian college, is to have meaning, it can be only in our personal, dynamic exchange between faculty and students in the true learning experience. You have taken the vital initiative in creating learning experiences in which there was such an exchange. The title director of religious activities carries little meaning in itself. You, Bud, have given it the signifi- cance it now holds for us; Meredith will not soon forget that you were here. And all who know you will under- stand why we dedicate the 1967 Oak Leaves to you, Mr. R.A.L. Walker. Being the only coed here is an awesome thing. Everybody knows I ' m sort of an earthy person. Speaking the truth in love You are struggling with a real question. Hey, maybe this year we can simply dare to fail. This is my senior year, too, don ' t forget. H JTH 11 10 12 r J As a separate, but not separated, community in the city of Raleigh, we at Meredith seek to question, to know, to lead, and to serve. Because we are a part of the whole, we take from and give to the community. And from the sharing we grow with the community, hopefully towards a betterment for all. ! e: . .  Hdniiriistrauori i-- fidiTimistration Dr. E. Bruce Heilman President 16 BOARD OF TRUSTEES L. M. Ellen Kirby, President Legislative Board The Legislative Board holds regular weekly meetings to consider changes that will clarify, simplify, or im- prove existing regulations, policies, and the Student Government Constitution. Sub-committees are formed to draw up recommendations that come back to the Board for discussion, possible revision, and final ap- proval. Recommendations are often devised as a re- sult of ideas and suggestions that come from hall buzz sessions or open Board meetings. Representing every hall on campus, the Legislatve Board becomes aware of student body concerns and works through committees to make constructive improvements. Kay Cockerham, Chairman Student Activities Board The Student Activities Board is a flexible, growing body undertaking a variety of projects. Composed of club presidents and officers from each class, society, and dormitory, the board represents every phase of student life. Its primary purpose is to integrate campus activities and fulfill the cultural and social needs of students and faculty members. Through the voices of dorm representatives, students can channel their suggestions and grievances in all matters of campus life, outside of the legislative realm, to the proper source for action. Thorough studies this year led to improve- ments in the decor and atmosphere of the campus. Among the projects inaugurated by the Board this year are Parent ' s Day, a student committee on concerts and lectures to provide more cultural and intellectual stimu- lation outside of the classrooms, social activities jointly sponsored by North Carolina State University and Meredith students, and a carnival to raise money for the Library Fund. The Board is progressive and is finding many new outlets for its services. Judy Ramsey, Chairman The Board in action 100 Seated: Smith, Grumbles, Copeland, Maness, Caroll, Young, Rogers. Htn cCuccK T e Curtain going up! And this, audience, is the Meredith fresh- man class. As we walk across the imaginary stage, I see myself, a mem- ber of this somewhat bewildered group, as I begin this new phase of my life. The culmination of my past is the me I see now. I remember most vividly my first days in kindergarten, my first report card, my freshman year in high school, my first date, the Senior Prom, and, finally, my high school commence- ment. All of these are milestones in my life. I also see the people who have patiently and lovingly guided me — my family, my friends, my teachers. I think about my favorite things — beach trips, pajama parties, dances, stereo records, chocolate milk- shakes, good report cards, and flowers from a special friend. At times, life is wonderful and exciting for me. Every day promises new and different experiences, and living is a joy. But, at other times, the insecurity and uncertainty of youth is so overwhelm- ing that I begin to doubt my abilities and my worth. I sometimes want to be treated as an adult, even though I must admit that I often act more like a child. At other times the adult world seems strange and formidable, and my childhood becomes a sym- bol of a security that is lost. I know that I ' m scatterbrained, impractical, and self-centered. But I rationalize my faults and promise myself that I ' ll try to focus my thoughts on others. I consider my life representative of that of the typical college freshman. We have had similar experiences and felt similar emotions. We are a part of a society which is rather uniform in its ideas and ideals. We have read the same books, seen the same movies, thought the same thoughts, and weathered the painful period of adolescence. I believe that the greatest significance of my past is the realization that it has made me the individual I am. I remember my first beach vacation and the Senior Prom with happy, nostalgic feelings. But I look to the future with anticipation. College is a transition between childhood and adulthood. It is a time for youth to live a somewhat idealistic existence in preparation for the outside world, a world of reality. As a college student, I hope to benefit from this community academically, socially, and spiritually. At college, the individual finds his special talents and abilities, meets new and different people, and grows in his understanding of his basic religious beliefs. The Baptist chaplain at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says that the student makes the three most important de- cisions of his life while at college. He chooses a profession, a 154 partner, and a philosophy. I hope that college will help me to decide the contributions that I will be best capable of making to society. And, as most other college girls, I naturally hope to find my prince Charming. But most important of all, I hope to find a philosophy for my life — to know exactly who I am. I don ' t believe, however, that I will find the answers to all my questions and the realization of all my dreams at college. But I do hope that, because of my college experience, my life will develop a deeper meaning and purpose. In the words of Louisa May Alcott, Life is my college. May I graduate well and earn some honors. Jeanie Lackey MEDITATIONS ON THE PRESENT STATE OF AFFAIRS Yesterday As I sat comfortably In front of The Box The man said cheerfully That 2,000 commies had been killed in eight days In the current anti-war war in Vietnam. And I thought This is ridiculous. It is past the point of sadness or tragedy. It is ridiculous. For you may Blow, whistle, and shout, Weep, stamp, stare at the wall, The sky. Or burn yourself to protest What you cannot understand, accept, or change. Meanwhile, there is silence, sirens in the night, shots, searchlights, barbed wire, guns, guns, guns Missiles and men, And all staring at the wall — Iron or stone or bamboo. Or red, white, and blue — With one finger on the trigger And one on the button And a child playing with a toy soldier While a boy soldier Lies dying In a sweaty jungle. And it is ridiculous. Sylvia Stoudemire 155 TO A LOST LOVE Your words had no meaning that day — semantics pushed aside you talked of love, and life and laughter, little things you liked — or said you loved Life to you was some delightful, some exciteful isle where silence stilled the air where one ' s only care was making sure that one ' s own tour wouldn ' t settle there! Me? I want faces, push and pull of crowds down mainstreet a small backyard with a fence (and that with a hole to let the world in) And I want teas where ladies come to chat Of this and that, To unfold wallet pictures of their kin And talk of little troubles Johnny ' s in. And I can only laugh and long For my own creation, procreation and shaping of human- kind. The world ' s not large enough for them and me, you say. Your world ' s too small for me Without its shrilling streets, boarded buses, Babies ' bleats and mothers ' hushes. Backyards strewn with strings ' n things That make for big-eyed boys ' joys. Little girls with frills and curls And old men that for years have been Molded to park benches. I want to see and be with all of these And you — Why, you ' re there; I ' m here And there ' s no path between us . . . Except by the high road of humanity Or the low road of void. Kae Freeman TRILOGY Live Love Lose Have Had Hurt Dance Death Dust Nancy Boyd 156 Never call home when you are homesick! I did and I cried my eyes out for two hours. Daddy, who to me always has been very stern and almost cold-hearted, seemed to have a distinct warmth in his voice, a warmth I had never noticed before. Mother sounded so sweet I could hardly believe it was she. We never seemed to do anything but argue before, but now as I sit here trying to recapture the sound of her voice, I cannot imagine why I ever found reason for quarreling. My little sis- ter had an angelic sound in her voice as she said, Sissy, I miss you. The lump in my throat would not go away. I thought of all the times I had scolded her for picking up the telephone extension when I was talking to a friend. Speaking for myself, as well as many others, I am sure that if we get nothing else out of our stay at college, we will leave with a much deeper sense of appreciation for the truly important things in life, cur- homes and our families. There is no place like home. Vicky Davis LOOKING BACK I came to you a dreamer Full of thoughts Strong with the strength of youth. Never defeated, yet never really tried. You waged war immediately. As though your very existence relied Upon my destruction. You took my dreams, my hopes, my plans, my ideals, my songs, my leisure time; And gave me instead frustration, angry tears, hopelessness at your unjust ways, nights of worry, and idols with clay feet. You took my security and broke it into shattered pieces. Asking that I give you also the best of my abilities. And then you sent me out from you, Unsure and afraid to face life. And I found trials. And found myself in difficult situations. But I discovered You had taken my youthful strength and torn it down, To replace it with a shaft of steel inside me Which could not be shaken. You had laughed at my pseudo self-confidence That would have been destroyed with the first defeat, And instilled in me instead a perception of my own strengths and weaknesses on which I found firm footing. The shattered dreams, forgotten hopes and schemes. You had replaced with clearly-defined goals and assurance that I could reach them. You made me a better person. Yet I shudder remembering those Who were defeated by you, Meredith College.
