Dr. Carlyle Campbell You are the embodiment of the ideals of the Mere- dith community. In your life we have found a worthy example to follow. You embody the fine qualities of a father, not only for the Campbell family, but for the Meredith family as well. Your profound wisdom, command of language, and lively wit have made your chapel speeches and friendly conversations a vital part of our individual development. A true gentleman and scholar, you pursue knowledge and inspire in us a desire to know life. You have made your position not only a profes- sional one, but also a personal one. You and your wife have welcomed us into your home, thereby draw- ing us close to you. Your wholehearted participation in campus activities has made you in every respect the leader of the angels. Dr. Campbell is still as dear to those who grad- uated twenty-seven years ago, as he is to present graduates. During your twenty-seven years of service to Mere- dith, the school has experienced a new growth and development. Many facilities that were only dreams are now realities as a result of your devotion. Be- cause of your diligence in seeking the best for Mere- dith, the Carlyle Campbell Library will be a monu- ment to your outstanding scholarship and service. In addition to your leadership at Meredith, your influence has reached across North Carolina and the South. As a member of various commissions, you have demonstrated your vital concern for the advancement of higher education. Your positions of authority have given you deep insight into all aspects of education, thus enriching your accomplishments as president of Meredith. Your civic and academic involvement has preserved our sense of belonging to the larger community, as well as to the campus. At the same time your genuine love of learning has focused our attention on the pri- mary objectives of Meredith College. Your retirement seems unreal to us, so intimately have we come to associate you with the life of the college. To you we dedicate the 1966 Oak Leaves — Dr. Carlyle Campbell. The leader of the angels
