It is no 8:25 classes . . afternoon . . . splurging with a I ... an ice-cream cone in the Hiv Happiness is seeing old friends after a summer of separation . . . slipping back into the old rou- tine ... it is the confidence of an upperclass- man . . . and the excitement of a freshman . . . a 10:0 0 date and a cup of coffee ... a full mail box. ... It is recognition for tasks well-done . . . ambitions achieved ... the satisfaction of realis- tic plans for the future beginning to unfold . . . a summer job. ... Yet happi- ness is more than this ... it is serving others . . . helping at Dix Hospital or the Blind School . . . the ability to listen — and sincerely care . . . happiness is love. A year of contrast . . . This is our school. Four of the most significant years of our life are spent here. Four years of varying activities, accomplishments, and emotions. We have times of happiness, times of sadness, occasional times of turmoil, and blessedly, there are times of con- tentment. We learn about life through living, living enriched by the knowledge and example of our professors. Hopefully, we will become the leaders of tomorrow. Vi ' St rW . m-.- ' r. f M4 ' ■■ ii,pj ii r -f CORN HUSKIN- FOUNDERS ' DAY A tradition at Meredith is Founders ' Day. a day when facuhy and students, alumnae and friends join together in commemoration of the founders of this institution. It is important to us because we realize that were it not for the past there would be no present and certainly no future. One of the events of this day is the recep- tion held in Johnson Hall for the faculty, staff, guests, and members of the Senior Class. •HI Founders ' Day brings with it more than a formal service. It fosters a union diificult to achieve under other circumstan- ces. It is a nostalgic moment as Seniors realize that this is the last time their entire class will be so assembled. It is a time of pride, the just pride of an insti- tution which has well fulfilled its purpose. Bui it is a time of rededication. rededication to the high calling of Christian scholarship. Freshman: Amid the flashing light-, of the complicaled push-button mantrap, four seemingly perfect girls apiicand only to be rejected by the bachelor who pieferred the homely matchmaker. ! ntlicis as the unusual 20 1964 found only in poniegranels. pronounceable monohexmunainnebriateciticacid some adventure, some gold, but in their selfish conflict they succiidfd only in destroying • 21 CONCERT AND LECTURE SERIES The Meredith College (■oiiiniunily is privileged to participate in many cultural opportunities both on the campus and in the city of Raleigh. Are you listening? was the theme of a thought provoking lecture delivered in the fall by poet Hollis Summers. Through the Friends of the College we were able to hear the beautiful music of Van Clyburn. famed pianist, while a quite different note was offered in the folk singing of Peter. Paul and Mary. Such programs as these have greatly enriched our cultural exjjeriences. CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES Christmas is always a special time. Here at Meredith we celebrate in a special way with a gala formal dinner in the dining hall. We are entertained by the Ensemble as they sing a variety of Christmas melodies. The highlight of the banquet is the Christmas carols sung by the dining hall staff. After the dinner we board busses to go caroling at the homes of faculty members. ALICE IN WONDERLAND Waking up to find herself in an imaginary realm of confusion. Alice encounters the wonderland ' s unusual personages character- ized by the faculty. We can still hear the White Queen stating. Jam tomorrow, jam yesterday, but never jam today. ' and surely the command of the Queen of Hearts. Off with his head! will rever- berate through future dreams. We remain impressed by the Mad Hatter ' s logic: You can draw water from a water well — so you can draw molasses from a molasses well. The scenes of a Wood in Wonderland, the Mad Tea Party, and the Trial of the Knave of Hearts will never be forgotten by anyone who may view our faculty in such delightful confusion. PLAY DAY The 1963 Play Day festivities be- gan with the crowning of the Duke and Duchess. Mr. Raynionrl L. Herndon reigned along with Weezie Allen over this afternnon of fun in the court. Among the many events of the afternoon are relay races, contests, and challenges. The suitcase re- lay, in which the racers must open a suitcase, don its contents and remove them, is one of the most popular events. The voices of the members of Fair- cloth dormitory fill the court as they carry forth their theme of ■■Roy ' s by singing of Or-an-ge Slush. Two participants, the doctor, Ann Pepper Poole, and her nieasely patient. Donna Cullen are caught off guard by a liit of candid pho- tography. HOSPITALITY iuither event which is tradition- ally included in the activities of Hospitality weekend is the horse show. At this time the student iiody is privileged to see the per- formance of our outstanding and beautiful horses under the excel- lent horsemanship of both Mere- dith and town students. CiMS Hospitality weekend at Meredith always coincides with May Day. At this time the May Court, composed of repre- sentatives from each class, the society marshals, and the May Queen and Maid of Honor, are presented. They, as well as students and guests, are entertained by an original dance performed by the modern dance classes. WEEKEND Every year the Freshman class plays host to the incoming stu- dents, inviting them to spend an entire weekend with them in the dorms. The visiting girls are offered an opportunity to get a taste of college life, while we are privileged to become acquainted with those girls who next year will become a part of our college conmiunitv. GRADUATION r. ' ' •w •• i J - - Hl i ' rj Graduation is both a beginning and an end. We are proud of ourselves — because we are on this side of four years of college. But we are humble — because there were so many opportunities which we failed to grasp. We must go out now. prepared, yet fearful, to face the future, a future no longer sheltered by the walls of academic study. We leave, full of gratitude and expectancy, but with a lump in our throats — because reading an alumnae bulletin is not the same as being here; we can ' t say see you next fall ; and we pack our cars for the last time. mm ■ ' . Dashing from point to jxjint on campus we pursued this sometimes elusive phantom of knowledge. There were notes to take, unknown x ' s to find, ideas to develop into themes, term papers to write, formulas lo develop, Shakespeare or Chaucer to memorize, verhs to conjugate. But there was more than this. There was a sharing and understanding between our professors and us. LEGISLATIVE BOARD At weekly Monday night meetings, the Legislative Board discusses changes in the Constitution and regu- lations of the Association; efforts are also made to simplify and clarify the existing regulations. After carefully considering each item, the Board sub- mits its final decisions to the student body for approval. Sue Ennis, chairman JUDICIAL BOARD The Judicial Board, wliioli is com- posed of representatives from each class is the means by which the student body has its voice in considering all infrac- tions of rules which are not treated auto- matically as prescribed in the Handbook. Straightforwardness and truthful testi- mony are considered most heavily in ariivins at a just decision. Chairman of the Jiidiiial Board mM 9 ' ' STUDENT ACTIVITIES BOARD The Student Activities Board lias three main concerns: to encourage and promote social activities for stu- dents, faculty, and administration; to educate the student body in standards of social behavior; and to develop cultural interests. This year ' s proj- ects have been varied. The board has brought movies to the campus, given several chapel programs con- cerning manners, dating, and dining hall piocedure, provided music for the dining hall, and furnished the Hut. Each spring the committee selects and })resents a slate of candidates for stu- dent elections. Once a month, these girls meet with a small group of Fresh- men to discuss such topics as good taste, summer jobs, and citizenship. Each group is guided by a faculty member who advises each girl luitil the time her major is declared. Under the new organization of the Meredith Christian Association, t!ie four major denomina- tional groups function as a part of this larger body. The Canterbury, Wesley, and Westminster groups function strictly within the individual churches. The BSU, due to state-wide policy, is campus-centered rather than comnuniity-centered. This allows closer student contact, but does not ignore the important aspect of student-church relationship. B Sl S ' -v JWhii BliL i f m M 1 1 iMiii jUj HJI One of the most popular and stimulating activities of the BSU is the Friday supper-discussion meet- ings at which Baptist students from the colleges in Raleigh meet for an evening of fun and thoughtful prob- ing into current topics of signifi- cance. Every fall the MCA has a Meet The Ministers tea at which Mere- dith students are given the oppor- tunity to become better acquainted with the Raleigh ministers. This tea immediately precedes Join the Church Sunday. All I can do is try to be honest . . . honest to God and honest about God. This is what Bishop Robin- son writes in his widely discussed book and this is the invitation that the Meredith Christian Association ex- tended to the college community during Religious Emphasis Week for 1964. For five days there were on cam- pus outstanding Christian persons to lead us in worship and study. Discussions, fun, fellow- sliip and many unique ex- periences are the results of BSU gatherings. The or- ganizations of Meredith and State operate jointly and separately in everything from Friday night supper forums to conventions, par- ties and car washes. On week-day evenings the student body is offered the opportunity to gather for a few mo- ments in the small auditorium for a program of prayer and meditation. This gathering for quiet worship is known as Vespers. An important part of the BSU program on campus is LISTEN, an organization whose purpose is to project a dynamic program of mis- sionary education and service. Col- lections are made on every hall which are used to send suinmer missionaries to foreign countries. MONOGRAM CLUB 111 Older to foster physical as well as mental development, the Monogram Chib encourages students to participate in extra- curricular activities such as basketball, volley- hall, tennis, and ping pong. By participating in these various sports, the girls earn points. The team is Meredith ' s represent- ative in contests with surround- ing colleges. The basketball varsity is composed of students who dis- play outstanding enthusiasm and interest in basketball. These students relinquish some of their free time to participate in games with other colleges. The purpose of the Hoofprint CluJj is to promote good horse- manship among its members. The main activities include sponsoring the annual May Day horse show for college students and planning breakfast rides for club members. A. A. ACTIVITIES When you see the hikes rolling along Ridge Road or see a group of sunhatheis around the pool, you know that someone is taking advantage of some of the activi- ties which are offered hy the A. A. The A.A. provides Meredith students with activities ranging from individual sports such as golf and archery to team sports such as tennis and softball. However, the best-loved A.A. activities are those which give the students a chance to join their classmates, and through combining their ideas and talents, produce in twu weeks what it would take Broadway or C.B.S. two months to produce. Through the individual sports or the competitive activities such as Stunt or Corn Huskin ' , the Meredith student soon realizes that there is an A.A. activity for everyone.
