Our college years are a time of growth and maturity- As the oak emerges from the acorn into the strong, sturdy tree, so we begin our higher edu- cation as green freshmen. We become oriented and then a part. We grow and mature, until, as the oak leaf falls off the twig, we complete this particular time of growth and graduate into the world of business, further education, or homemaking, whichever our choice may be at the time. It is the purpose of this 1963 edition of the Oak Leaves to depict for you the integral phases of our college life as they have been united into oneness. Peggy Freshmen arrive at Meredith with joy and anxiety. At the formal reception we meet some of the college leaders and administration. WE BECOME ORIENTED We begin the long process of our first registration for classes. WL il I iinii Sophomores with class spirit entertain the Freshmen at a tea. Returning to campus in Septem- ber, we watched the golden-yellow haze of summer fade into the orange of autumn leaves. Contrary to tile beKefs of a rival class, we knew that we did not know it all, and weeks of study were broken only by fun-filled weekends and an occasional bridge game. For Corn Huskin , class spirit was red hot as we supjjorted our football team, the Angels, and cheered our lovely home-coming queen in a gala l)arade. Our Stunt performance revealed our darker, more serious side in a dramatic presentation of a young girl ' s social responsibilities that we called The Unveiling. Christmas holidays were a myriad of bright lights on trees and in the eyes of the lucky recipients of pins and diamonds. Upon our return to campus, however, the mood turned blue as we faced exams. In February the Sophomore Dance was a swirl of gny Inii-s :„u Icnulx nuisic. Then the fresh green folia?;!- (if .-.iirinf; .s(%iiic(l to add new vigor to the year as we fiiii.slii-d tlie Irriii and honored our big sisters for flu- last tiiiie with the traditional daisy chain. JUNIORS Senior Class Officers Mary T-or D.wis President Kathy Smith Virc-P resident Norma Hamricic Sfcri ' tiirti Mary Belle Pate Treasurer As graduating seniors we put on tliose blacli caps and jrowns for the last time and thought of the con- trasting wliiteness that symbolizes our four wonderful years at Meredith College. We remembered our freshman year and the new- ness of tliose tiist fraternity iiarties, rush week, Stunt night, weej-cerids at hnnir dining which we were finally alile to poM- as part of Hir -ollege crowd, and Aflir .III cxciling Muiiiiirr. m- returned to Meredith as prnml sn,,l loi.s. Allhoiigh we bad lost a few friends, we (rr no Iniigir llir haliies — we had made it, ;ind the- unly a]iiia n ' lil cliangc in us was that we were mcirc nsc r rd and appealing to college men. With this Near (•■iiiie tlu- winning of the coveted troi)hy for Stunt Night, selections of majors, the famous Soiihomorc Slump, and parties galore! But then came that Big Year — we were juniors and it was time to settle down. Dates were more serious; studying was anything but a sinijile pastime; days were short and schedules were tight. As uiiper- classmen, we had a name to live up to. The most exciting year of all began with our entering a brand new dorniitor and finally accepting a new role, that of .seniors .it M.-n-dilli College. En- gagement rings, the prospects of cM-iting .jobs, prac- tice teaching, unlimited weekends, cars, worry over quality points, and thoughts of the future filled the nunutes which flew by at full speed until that Un- forgettable Dav. And llieri. as siuld.-nly as it began, it was all ov.T.
