We are fresh from high school, fresh in col- lege. We begin as Freshmen, and we grow into Sophomores, then Jun- iors, and finally Seniors. We are alone. For the first time we are thinking individually. We are encouraged to react individually. We are assuming responsibility indi- vidually. We are becoming ourselves. Four years we spend here — work- ing, studying, learning — mostly happy, sometimes sad. Four years of our life, dedicated to education but holding many other precious ac- complishments. Four years of our life, hard earned, but well spent. Every minute event begun in the formative years has become the soul and substance of our Meredith and of each student. FRESHMEN — CLASS OF 1965 Penney Donna Dull President Sue Johnson Vice-President Anne Pepper Poole Secretary Lura Penney Treasurer Distracted mothers, weary fathers, and we, the bewildered daughters with quiver- ing smiles glued on our faces, unloaded the mountainous piles of trunks, lamps and shoe boxes from our cars on that September day. Having met our roommates and suitemates, we decorated rooms and uttered final brave good-byes to our parents. On the guided tour of the campus after the get-acquainted picnic on the first night, we learned various information about our new home ( such as the story of Wilbur ' s tunnel), then returned to our rooms with hordes of new friends to talk about college life. As the days flew by, memories rapidly accumulated. Could we ever forget Rush Week and Decision Day, Zeke and Almiry in Corn Huskin ' , our pet shop with its last minute changes for Stunt, the revenge on the Seniors, and countless hours spent in the library? Hall parties before holidays, dorm card mistakes, term papers, unnecessary trips to Ridgewood, and themes, themes, and more themes, fraternity parties. . . . ■n; fr LJ.il That long awaited mail from home! SOPHOMORES — CLASS OF 1964 Mary Lyon McKenney President Helen Simms Vice-President Francine Wilkerson ...Secretary Sue Anne James Treasurer September brought the Sophomores back to Meredith College with a note of wist- ful remembrance of golden summer. The lilting melody of carefree days was shattered by our return to the rapid academic pace. A clanging gong sounded a change in key as the Sophomores adopted an oriental theme for Corn Huskin ' . Such measures were well taken as the Sophomores and Seniors tied for top honors. Bursting with pride and teaming with desire for another victory, we spent weeks in frenzied preparation for Stunt Night. A dramatic hum of strings introduced our command performance of Aipotu and the cup was ours! Music of a holiday mood permeated the atmosphere as Thanksgiving and Christ- mas arrived with a new flurry of diamonds and fraternity pins. However, this gaiety soon yielded to a droning dirge as exams cast temporary shadows over our spirits. 38 Where the boys are — Johnson Hall. But Harvey, I told you to meet me on the breezeway! But with spring came an exuberance which was manifested in the Sophomore Dance. In harmony with t he rhythmical dancing sway, each girl added a graceful note as she swirled to the music of the orchestra. Soon, the more stately strains of the graduation march led our big sisters through the daisy chain and on to receive their diplomas. The term had ended; the final note had been played. Gone were our Big Sisters and last year ' s daisy chain, for we were now a Big Sister class. We thought of our college years and likened them unto a song. Our freshman year we had drawn the lines and staffs as a beginning. The next year we had decided what kev to write our song in as we chose a special field of study. In our Junior year we were to put down the notes of our song. The finished melody has created sounds which will forever bring to our memory the events of the past year — our Junior year. Strike the first chord, the music begins, and the memories flow through our minds. We excitedly greeted one another and welcomed our Little Sisters the first few days. Soon we were as busv ' as ants working on Corn Huskin ' . Stunt came quickly as we combined all of our efforts, enthusiasm, and ability to work on it. That night we laughed at the circus as our chimes won us second place in the competition. The Christmas season brought caroling and a rest in our song with its well-deserved holi- days. As we returned, the echo of our exclamations over the pins, diamonds, and wedding plans of ' many of our classmates had scarcely faded when another highnote was reached by our class. We received our class rings — the symbol of our attainment of the title, Junior, and then we rushed into exams. Typical Second Vann bridge and gab sessions Neither rain nor snow nor dark of night. . A new measure in our song began after we returned from mid-semester holidays. All of our efforts were put in our dream project of the year — the Junior-Senior. We worked feverishly with high spirits, ever hopeful that it would not snow. When the night came, we glowed at the success of our work. Once more our thoughts turned to entertaining as we planned a party for our Little Sisters and formed ever closer ties with them. Spring weather came and the days passed rapidly as our spring fever gained momentum. We were soon turning in the final papers and projects and preparing for exams. As the semester ended, the last chord of our song was struck, and we looked back over our Junior year with pride. Our song had been written — the melody and harmony was our own and would be perfected during our final year. We have forever implanted in ourselves the memory of this — our Junior year. Treasurer We began to pack our suitcases to return to Meredith for our senior year. Behind us were three jovful and tearful vears of happiness and sadness, of exuberance and meditation, of grow- ing and learning, of fearing and knowing. This year, we packed new things as we prepared to begin our last year at college. We brought back a new maturity and a deeper meaning of the future. We packed more creativity and greater opportunity, new initiative with bits of excitement stuffed into the cor- ners. We threw in a few cherished hopes of great value and we reverently placed a handful of convictions and beliefs in a tiny velvet box of self-confidence and self-respect. As the year progressed, our suitcases became fuller and fuller, with diamonds and pins, new cars and prospective jobs. These objects crowded out old childish desires and daydreams. As we picked choice items to include, we threw out the obsolete ideas, the now meaningless con- ceptions to which we had held so tenaciously. As the spring approached, we lost a few fellow-travellers, but we saw to it that they carried their suitcases of memories carefully away with them. 56 Ouija board, sweet little Ouija board. In the spring of the year when a young lady ' s fancy turns to thoughts of sun bath- ing at the pool. Graduation plans were hastily but happily tossed into a corner, and brides ' books were laid on the top. Trousseaus and graduate catalogues, and tickets to far-away places took a major place in our bags. Last of all, we included a few pictures. Of course, there was the picture of Him, from whom now we would never be parted. Then as we looked about us, we grabbed a mental snap- shot of a fountain, a row of cherry trees, a green court with groups of girls walking, a steeple in the sunrise. All these pictures we held dear to our hearts, and put them deep in the suitcases. As we looked about to see what we had left, we saw achievements and honors, leadership and fun. We saw scraps of revolutionary ideas and new forms of living. We saw a bit of our- selves in tradition. But we felt no fear of leaving these things. It should be this way. With excited hands, we closed our suitcases, carefully locked them, and left for a new life. S ' ¥ Organizations We become a part . . We become absorbed in one pace and structure of a group of indi- viduals. We come to realize our environment. We emerge from our- selves. Cooperation, progress, and new horizons are the key features of Mere- dith ' s campus organizations. Co- operation among the groups is evident everywhere. Progress has been the primary goal as each or- ganization has grown in depth and scope. New horizons are still carry- ing these groups forward as they seek bigger and better achievements for their good and for the good of Mere- dith. Look ahead and be rightfully proud. 1 STUDENT GOVERNMENT Government is a trust, and the officers of the government are trustees; and both the trust and the trustees are created for the benefit of the people. So is the government of Meredith College a trust, set up by the students, who nominate and select their leaders to be trustees. Finding out student opinion through committees and discussions in Thursday morning chapel programs, these leaders definitely work for the welfare of the students. Having both legislative and judicial power, the Council often got tired in those 7:00- 12:00 Monday night meetings, but the water breaks and Miss Fleming ' s peanuts helped make the hours seem shorter. The Faculty Committee, composed this year of Miss Flem- ing, Dean Peacock, Miss Bell, Mr. Eads, and Dr. Jones, met monthly with the Council and offered advice on many serious ques- tions, as well as the favorite problems of skirt lengths and parking in the grove. ASSOCIATION Our President, Nancy Ricker, is a favorite of all. Not only was she good at keeping the student body in gales of laughter on Thursday mornings, but she was also a hard worker, with insight into the problems confronting the individual students and the school as a whole. She will be remembered as an able leader in the expansion of the student government. Cille, our favorite veep, Jane with her pen and pad and Velma, keeper of the purse strings, stood ably be- hind Ricker as they capably carried out their duties of office. As long as the Honor Code is basic in our government at Meredith, stu- dents will continue to uphold the high standards of their school and to have a part in the betterment of the college community. BAPTIST STUDENT The Baptist Student Union Council, under the guidance of Mrs. Miriam Prichard, Meredith ' s first full-time B.S.U. adviser, and under the able leadership of our president, Anne White, and her main team of helpers, Ann Chandler, veep; Nancy Evans, secretary; and Scott Beaver, treas- urer, began the year enthusiastically with a pre- school retreat at Camp Good Hope, where plans were made for school-year activities. Back at Meredith plans were executed in rapid succes- sion: a progressive dinner for freshman, planned in co-operation with all the Baptist churches in Raleigh; a meet-the-Ministers Tea; and the annual Freshman-Transfer Party in the Court. The LISTEN program for foreign missions was presented and received with new impetus, as was the Lottie Moon Christmas offering and mission study course. Many Meredith students participated actively in the State B. S. U. Con- vention, held in Raleigh November 3-5. Anne White, President BSU COUNCIL: Seated, left to right: Chandler, Evans, Beaver. Don Nis- wonger, pastor-adviser of the B. S. U. Enriching the spiritual life of Mere- dith students were the daily vespers and family altars; carrying some of this inspiration to others was in ex- tension projects such as supervised recreation for the Joe Lewis Park, programs for patients at Dorothea Dix Hospital, and reading for stu- dents at the Blind School. As the fall air began to crackle the classes gave the faculty stiff competition in Corn Huskin ' . Later in the fall Stunt Night came with acting and scenery surpassed only on Broadway. The Christmas season found the A. A. sponsoring the annual caroling party. Spirits were gay as bus-loads of students serenaded the faculty at their homes. As winter snows melted into spring, a spirit of frolic was in the air. When Playday came around in April, the dorms let forth bands of eager girls ready for the carefree joys of peanut races, Softball games, tennis matches, bridge, and individual feats. Delores Atkins. We achieve ability to compete with effort, ideas, and people. We arrive at an appraisal of goals and their expression in action. We learn to channel ourselves. Herein we honor those students whose superior qualities have merited recognition. SILVER SHIELD Nancy Richer President The Silver Shield is Meredith ' s honorary leadership organization. The society strives to foster a better spirit on the campus and to recognize outstanding girls who have contributed to life at Meredith. The members of Silver Shield are selected from each rising and present Senior Class by members of the organization and the faculty on the basis of Christian character, scholarship, service to the school, and construc- tive leadership. The Silver Shield is above all a service organization — with its members — both collectively and individually — working toward the overall purpose of the society, which is to serve what we recognize as the true spirit and the high ideals of Meredith. Cille Benton Secretary and Treasurer Mary Lou Nichols Vice-President Anne White Peggy Wilkins KAPPA NU SIGMA % ip Martha Stuckey Hilda Maness Jean Knight President Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer As the honorary scholastic society of Meredith, Kappa Nu Sigma seeks to encourage and uphold high scholastic excellence on the campus. The society sponsors a chapel program in the fall and a special lecture in the spring to stimulate scholarship in all areas. Seniors are elected to membership on the basis of high scholastic standing achieved over a period of two years. Each year the society awards the Helen Price scholarship to the freshman having the highest scholastic average. Special recognition is given each spring to the two juniors having the highest averages.
