Weatherspoon 3n ilemoriam Patricia Anne Martin August 11, 1939— December 30, 195 ' Class of 1961 m. r Student odi ¥ Senior I am the Class of 1961. I came to Meredith four years ago from the noisy cities, from the bustling towns, and from the quiet countrysides. Homesick, afraid of new faces, awed by mountains of assignments, word studies, and term papers, cling- ing to my high school yearbook and the past. I was becoming an important part of Meredith. I dressed in silly clothes and tried my hand at hog calling. I even produced a Stunt called The Pearl. It didn ' t win a prize — but I was learning. Then suddenly I was a Sophomore — and, I suppose, wise and foolish. No longer afraid, but rather self-confident, I watched the Class of 1962 approach much as I had just a year before. That year I chose my major and began making decisions for my future — a future that included a sad farewell to my Big Sister amid daisies, tears, and songs. Junior year I launched into dramatics with more fervor. The Day the Fairies Smiled didn ' t win a cup, but it gave me a new spirit of love and co-operation. I was growing; I was learning; and I had a wonderful Little Sister who looked to me for guidance. And now with required courses taken, with hours in lab over, with term papers completed, I am ready to leave college behind. No, never behind, for more than I have become a part of Meredith, Meredith has become a part of me. I am the Class of 1961 and I am ready for Tomorrow. J4Utory. Class Liles, WonhxngXon. ' ' Bloody Mary is the girl for me. u n I o r Warm September days brought us back to Meredith, and it was 1960, our Junior year. It was a promising year, one we had anticipated for a long time. Our return brought memories of Freshman days, and it brought reunion, and little sisters. October colors surrounded us as we applied ourselves to major classes, brought out cur favorite wools, and took last chances at beach trips before winter. Brisk November breezes whisked through bare trees as we rushed to fraternity parties, as we worked ourselves into a purple glow for Stunt, on which we prided ourselves greatly, and as we headed home for a much-needed Thanksgiving va- cation. Cold, cold mornings of December found us forcing ourselves reluctantly from our beds for 8:30 ' s while the nights held ex- citing parties, thoughts of a wonderful Christmas, and a strange warmness in crowding into a bus to sing carols. January brought a new year — 1961 — new resolutions, new pins and diamonds, and new problems — exams! However, February brought better hopes, with class rings and snowy week ends, thoughts of Spring and wedding plans. March winds and April showers found us with high hearts and term papers, while May brought memories of a daisy chain and forethoughts of beaches and summer fun. Our Junior year had shown us new light in our studies, maturing decisions in our personal lives, and an ever-growing sense of thankfulness for and appreciation of Meredith. It had been a good year! No longer were we the lowly Freshmen, awestruck by the posi- tion of our upper classmen, the Sophomores. Now that title was ours. Turning on to face the table of contents of our year, we looked forward to the promising events of cur future. As we began, each day turned as a page; we planned for an ap- proaching climax. Having worked with devotion and diligence, we were rewarded with a tie for first place at Corn Husking. Our table of contents had promised another success, and we were bound together to fulfill the promise. Again success was ours, and we accepted our reward as we won first place in Stunt. With new courage and enthusiasm we eagerly turned the rest of the pages of our year. Having begun our book with unwavering ambition, we became interested enough to pass our exams, tests, grades, and a new semester to receive other re- wards of rings and pins. Our final chapter, making the daisy chain and wishing the best for our graduating sisters, encour- aged us to continue our book to include two more years. Weak- ened only by the thought of losing our Big Sisters. we strove on to the end of the year with our index to remind us of our glorious years of success and with an eye of anticipation toward the future. Freshman September, 1960, brought the first gUmpses of fulfilled dreams, hopes, ambitions; unfolding before us were hours of work, pleasure, sadness, and joy. In the first few weeks, hectic as they were, we were plunged into meetings, classes, discussions, all with an air of, This is you, your life, your future. Fall, with the gold-green background of the Meredith cam- pus, saw us whirl through class elections. Corn Huskin, Stunt, in a most successful manner. There were holidays, quizzes, concerts, football games, all at a breath taking pace that swept us through the season into brisk winter days and final exams. Suddenly it was Spring. The year was almost over, yet we had only seen the beginning. The future days before us holding exciting prospects, and, most important, the realization that life was being presented in its fullest, the richest way possible, through living and learning.
