CARUYLE CAMPBELL LIBRARY A M54V 376.8 1958 42178 CARLYLiE CAMPBELL LIBRARY Meredith College Raleigh, NC 27607-5298 THE 1958 e li € the yearbook of Meredith College Raleig h, North Carolina Medication sC- URING our four years at Meredith, we have come to know and love a professor whose understanding and wise guidance have been extended bountifully to us in every need, whether class work or stunt productions or student govern- ment functions. Diligently she has molded our intellectual potential with the challenge of her own immense knowledge and has inspired us to even greater endeavors by her pro- fessional excellence. Because of what this very fine person means to us as a teacher, counselor, and friend, we dedicate the 1958 issue of the Oak Leaves to DR. NORMA ROSE Meredith College Library Raleigh, N. C. rorewori Like the birth of a new song, we began weakly; but as the years of learning rolled by, we built into a completed composition — a sym- phony of Life. The memories of our college years of composing are made more wonderful for us be- cause of the working together in sisterhood through our societies. Be you ASTRO or PHI, this edition of the Oak Leaves strives to recall the memories of those years. As we drove up the drive on that memorable first day the brick buildings looked alien and a bit terrifying. For a while we lived in a house full of strangers, afraid to make overtures of friendli- ness, afraid to be thought aloof. Gradually, gradually names began to fit faces, roommates started to share mail as well as cookies, and the class fused into a part of the school. We were almost eager to return after the long-awaited week end at home. Timidly at first and with more assurance in the successive years, we gave a little of ourselves. Bonds began to grow as we participated in all the things — classes and conferences and tests, Christmas caroling and play day and stunt (don ' t ever forget stunt), gab-fest until three a.m., teas and dates and church on Sunday. All of these things we have done together, in each of the years — growing into a whole, becom- ing the Class of 58, becoming a part of Meredith. We would remember particularly the once only ' s — the excitement of the dew-drenched daisy picking, the terrible tenderness of our little sisters, the pride and chagrin of the dance that I)lew the top off. But most important was the four years ' living. We have learned every crack in the sidewalk. We have become famil- iar with the ins and outs of the workings of a college. We have come to know many, many people. We have met a host of new ideas. We have loved Meredith. And now that we have given ourselves to it, it has come to belong to us. Meredith is no longer just a college. It is our Alma Mater. Our Meredith. Senior Cla O icet a • i. From the very first day we were impressed by everything — the beautiful campus, the family altars, the chapel services, and vespers. We were more than delighted with Rush Week as we firmly decided to go Phi one day only to change our minds the next and go Astro. Then came Corn Husking Bee and Stunt Night, and with these activities our eagerness to participate reached an all time high. Yes, we were a part of Meredith now and we loved it! Other memories linger, and among them being our experi- ences with our study schedules which we tried vainly to follow and our first week end at home with its accompanying excite- ment. Then too, we can never forget the understanding of our big sisters ' and the helpf ulness of our counselors and advisors, for without them we would have Ijeen lost. As we reminisce, we assure ourselves that Meredith is the college for us. With this assurance in our hearts we shall, Alma Mater, through the remaining years of our college life salute thee with a song. The deep blue of the night was pierced as a golden star burst into flame. And Astiotekton was born. The angels smiled, for they knew that Astros are starbuilders. What does this starbuilding business mean? It s a lovely thought, but to the Astros, it ' s more than just a thought. It ' s doing all we can to build harmony and happiness. It ' s basketball games with our sister society . . . Christmas joy for blind children . . . early morning serenades for freshman. . . . It ' s the spirit which causes her heart to beat a little faster when she hears See thy children, Mother Astro. May the Astros never lose sight of this star they ' re building. Now me, I feel like a Phi. A host of students have concurred with her opinion, for something over thi ' ee hundred have joined Philaretia in Plain living and High thinking. That Phi feeling expresses itself in a multitude of ways. For one thing, there ' s fun punning. Hi, Phi is the standard greeting, and on Phi days everyone is Phine. The things of Phi call out that certain feeling, too. Purple sweaters and minia- ture Miltons hold their rightful place as visible expression. Then there ' s the pomp. The chill bumps that come whenever the chords of Behold in shining raiment are struck, the solemnity of Society Night, the dignity of its officers, and the poise of its marshals are all part of that Phi feeling. But the thing that fosters the feeling most is the Phi people. Kay and Peanut, lovable and laughable, represent the best of the Society. Students Katherine Hlidgins President Edka Holoman Second Vice-President Hazel Wiggins First Vice-President Catherine Fontaine Third Vice-President Yes, tlie Day Students are at it again. Don ' t you hear all that music and noise coming from the second floor of Johnson Hall? Into the two Day Student Rooms are stuffed food, bridge games and some eighty odd girls. Fully one third of our number has already earned one degree ( Mrs. ) , and the rest of us are working on it. This year has been a good one. Who of us can forget walking into our two rooms stripped of drapes and slip covers at the beginning of the year? Bandits? Robbers? Nope, just the cleaners. Throughout the fall we worked feverishly on homework, class activities, and the better game of bridge. The climax of first semester was reached with the wonderful Christmas caroling and our annual all night crazy mixed up party in the Hut. Such fun you never saw before. After the shock of exams was over, we helped elect our officers for 1958-19.59. and a fine bunch they are, too. Following our fun-packed spring holidays, we gathered to lay plans on how to win Play Day this year. Needless to say, the position and honor of the Day Stu- dents were upheld in this noble conflict. We really hate to see our seniors leave us, for they have been leaders of the school as well as the spark plugs of the Day Student organization. Our hope is that we can follow in the tradition of leadership and service to the school which they, and others like them, have left us.
