It should continually remind us, also, of our shared interests and purposes, and serve as strength and stimulus for the years ahead. Turn 16 (Ztawet, Senior Class History Here we are — a few less in numbers than wc were four years ago — but full of new experiences — and even somewhat wiser! Our freshman year . . . will we ever forget those first classes and our feeble, yet hopeful attempts to follow rigid study schedules? or those two slim evening privileges we scrambled to fill with blind dates (and chap- erones!) or the night before we went home for our first week end. when we packed everything we had and somehow managed to use i t all? or the dining hall bell that rang at odd intervals during the night before Christ- mas holidays? or our first college exam week: notecards in the breakfast line, notecards under our pillows, notecards in every pocket! Somehow we survived all the newness of it, for we had each other and we had made close friends. Summer passed quickly and we faced our second year at Meredith, full of determination and resolutions (which consisted largely of new study schedules, and forty dollars worth of textbooks). We were now into the swing of studying and were even beginning to see some connection between our courses. Can we ever forget Stunt Night and our exhilaration? The dining hall bell clanged louder than ever that night, and bathtubs carried a tell-tale yellow make-up stain for months ! We saw our big sisters graduate with mixed emotions: a little sad at seeing them go, but happy too for realizing that we were one more step up the ladder. Our junior year gave us unlimited privileges we somehow never found time to use, for spare hours were now spent working in labs and in the libraries — we were now in our major fields. Colorama won for us the Stunt trophy for keeps and later there was the excitement of putting on the Junior-Senior. With spring elections came the realization that we were Almost Seniors. Somehow we had never expected time to pass so quickly. That fall brought many changes: the new face on Johnson Hall (will we ever forget the steps where we used to sit and wait for the bus or where we had seen our big sisters form their class numerals?), the new Joyner Hall (modernly beautiful, but won ' t we always remember a little warmly our three years of classes in the old arts building?), and a new senior class — us. The Corn Husking Bee, Stunt, Christmas Caroling, May Day, and even exams, were each accompanied by the thought This is our last — let ' s make the most of it . . . we did. Meredith has given much to us. Not smugly, but a little proudly, we be- lieve that we have given something of ourselves to her: our loyalities, our dreams, and the enthusiasm of our youth. Somehow, we do not feel it was a poor exchange. Each student is personally responsible for her own conduct, for her obligations to the college community, and for informing herself of and abiding by the college regula- tions. This honor code is the basis upon which the Student Government Council of Meredith College acts and guides. During orientation week, through handbook classes, and open meetings held every Thurs- day in Chapel, the Council attempts to instill the principles of the honor code in the minds of tin- students. Student opinion, criticism, and suggestions are presented during this time and a constant effort is made to improve Student-faculty relations and. on the whole. to make it possible for each Meredith girl to receive all the advantages obtained from self-government. The Social Standards Committee, com- prised of the class presidents, class repre- sentatives, and society presidents, works un- der the Social Standards Chairman of the Council. This committee attempts to integrate the principles of correct behavior with the social events anil activities of Meredith. Through these various means and in co- operation with tin- Advisory and Faculty Com- mittees to Student Government, the Council works to promote high academic, social. and moral standards. Freshman and Transfer Counselors When a new student enters Meredith, she enters a life that can prove to be quite be- wildering as well as new and exciting. The counseling program is set up to help new students adjust themselves in such a manner that they can make their own the academic ideals, Christian principles, and fun and friendliness that symbolize Meredith. Small groups guided by a student counselor and a faculty advisei meet monthly to discuss informally social behavior, manner of dress on and off campus, study habits, and citizen- ship and honor. The purpose of counseling is to make it possible for each student to have a rich and meaningful four years, thus making the college experience a happy $ ;■J - Baptist Student Union Baptist Student Union — worship at ves- pers — a Tuesday chapel speaker or open meeting — a Y.W.A. study course — a sunrise service — Family Altar — a dorm discussion during Religious Focus Week — fun and fel- lowship with students from other colleges. This is B.S.U. in action. The theme for 1956-57 fitted well our position as Christian students in a community of learning — Lord, Teach Us. Keeping this theme in mind the executive council met early in September at Holden ' s Beach to co- ordinate plans for the year. Upon our return to the campus for Orientation Week, we promptly introduced the new students to Baptist Student Union, which is not only an agency of state-wide and southwide Baptists, but the co-ordinating organization for all Christian student work on campus. The State College Baptist Student Union joined us in entertaining the new students of both colleges in the Meredith College court our first Satur- day night in Raleigh. In the midst of classes Christ we shall proclaim. After classes began, the regular schedule of vespers. Executive and Greater Council meetings, LISTEN offerings, and Y.W.A. hall meetings filled the weekdays. On the week ends the Baptist Student Union co-operated with several Raleigh churches to introduce the girls to a new church home and interest them in active participation in Sunday School and Training Union. A special opportunity came our way this year when the North Carolina Baptist Student Union Con vention was held in Raleigh. Another spe- cial was Religious Focus Week in February. Through this work the Baptist Student Union hoped to train college youth for Chris- tian leadership, to link the student with the church, and to strengthen individual Chris tian commitment as it serves the college com- munity and the larger community of which the college is a part. Meredith College Playhouse Jeanne Grealish Pat Corbett President Videau Joyner Secretary Vice-President Susan Moss Treasurer The Meredith College Playhouse consists of students who have worked on at least one play. For the first time this year, fresh- men are able to come in as associate members. The Playhouse helps students who have an interest in any phase of dramatics.
