' dts History of the Senior Class We came as freshman, excited and thrilled over the possibilities of col- lege. We spent four years exploring the countless avenues of good times, friendships, and learning. We realize now how wonderful all these experi- ences have been. We rememl)er how we felt as freshman. Wasn ' t it great to be rushed and to feel you really belonged to Meredith when you choose your society? We came to appi eciate Meredith tradition as we dressed up for Corn Husk- ing, hurried around in secret before Stunt, and won points for our dorm on Play Day. We grew as we passed through our recjuired courses and got into our major field. We- came to understand people as we learned how to live in a community, and to be a part of it. We shared our lives with so many wonderful friends. We are sad to leave the happiness we have shared here. We are glad to build the future on these rich experiences. We salute Thee, Alma Mater, with hearts full of thanks for the opportunity of our college years. Mabel Jacquelii Idui Student Government Council The Meredith College Student Government Association, of which each student is a mem- ber, is based upon the democratic way of life as cited in the Honor Code. . . . Each student is personally responsible for her own conduct, for her obligations to the college community, and for informing herself of and for abiding by the college regulations. When the freshmen enter Meredith in the fall, the Council members act as guides during Orientation Week, and sponsor such functions as handbook classes, teas, informal gatherings, and other get-acquainted ses- sions. Throughout the year, the Council strives to promote a close unit of fellowship around the campus as well as to investigate the possible avenues open to improvement. The students are given an opportunity to express their views, suggestions, and con- structive criticism during the Thursday morning chapel period. These points are discussed in the Monday evening Council meetings and are dealt with accordingly. Once each month, a joint meeting between the Faculty Committee and the Student Government Council is conducted, thus pre- senting an opportunity for each group to share opinions and discuss pertinent situa- tions. Through this medium, a student- faculty relationship has been established. A Social Standards Committee, comprised of the class presidents, class representatives, and society presidents was established in 1953 to work with the Social Standards Chairman. This Committee deals primarily with social regulations on and off the campus and strives to uphold Meredith Standards. Posters and special chapel programs are but a few of the ways in which the girls are directed in developing social etiquette and acceptable social conduct. Freshman and Transfer Counselors Each new stutlent who enters Meredith is placed in a group of six to eight other new students under the guidance of a carefully selected student-counselor and an advisor from the faculty. These small groups meet nionthh to discuss informally such topics as social behavior and problems. Meredith traditions, citizenship and honor, and study habits. Personal visits and academic counsel- ing are also parts of the program. The counselors play an important part in the Orientation Week program. With the help of the B.S.U. and the A. A., they register all new students. A Big Wheel Party, an Open House in the Hut. and a guided bus tour of Raleigh are all projects of the coun- selors during this important week of intro- duction. The Assistant Dean, the Chief Counselor, and transfer and freshman counselors hold monthly meetings to discuss the units to be presented to the small groups or to share problems and solutions of problems in order to more successfully counsel. This group presents skits throughout the year to empha- size the units to be presented. Both counselors and advisors hold as their chief aim that of assisting new students to adjust to college life in such a manner that will benefit both the individual and her community. Baptist Student Union An agency of the state-wide and south- wide council of the Baptist denomination and at the same time the co-ordinating group for Christian student work at the college. the Baptist Student Union at Meredith Col- lege is made up of all those who take part in any of its many varieties of activities. Through it. there is opportunity for study, worship, and action in fellowship with young men and women from other colleges and universities. Organizational responsibility is borne b an executive council elected in campus-wide elections. In membership, in the purpose of translating into attitude and action the truth of the Christian faith, in appreciating and appropriating the special values for Christian growth inherent in this particular college situation, in outreach to believing and learning communities of different back- grounds, the B.S.U. is not confined to any group or place. Its program is effective as its purposes are shared and undergirded in the common life of which it is only a part. Through study, group and individual worship. leadership training, through the ministry of giving, and through co-operation with others who ponder the meaning of the human adventure, the B.S.U. seeks to serve the college and the larger community which the college serves. 86 Meredith College Playhouse Catherine Atkins President Videau Joynek Secretary Jeanne Grealish Vice-President Katherine Holt Treasurer The aim of the Meredith College Play- house is to help students who are interested in all phases of dramatics.
