But in these brief years we ' ve tucked away a lot of happy memories: of the freshman year, first place in Palio for our feature, using the idea of the three publications, the pajama party at the chimney and the Big Sister-Little Sister breakfast; of the sophomore year, one of those war years, the square dance with some of those V-12 ' s from Carolina, and that early morning daisy picking; of the junior year the angelic Junior-Senior Banquet and that never-to-be-forgotten hunt for the crook; of our last year, top honors in the basketball tournament and in Palio, thanks to atomic power. Just around the corner there ' s graduation and after that — we ' ll start over and be babv alumnae! Futch, Straughn, Funderburk. Then came the coffee for the transfer students and the Big-Sister-Little-Sister Party. The juniors showed their originality and class spirit by winning second place in Palio as honey-bees from the Bee- Hive and first place on Stunt Night with a fairy tale. In the spring came the climax of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet, Mexican Moon-Glow. With many treasured memories behind them, the juniors are looking forward with pleasure to their senior year. 57 Vke 1947 Oak Jjavei Stephenson. Singleton, Wells. With this goal in view, our first zeal has gone to our studies, of course; but in spare moments we have found time for few extra-curricular activities. In our freshman year the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce invited us to a lovely party, at which many of us got our first glimpse of State College men. Later on in the same year we had our class party, a colorful square dance in our barn. After having caught on last year to what Palio is all about, this year we won first place in three contests and became the proud owners of two unusual cups. For our stunt night performance we were given the second place and had our picture taken by the Life photographer, but even he could not reproduce the wonderful class spirit displayed in both events! The other plans for spare moments during our sophomore year included a hay-ride to Crabtree Creek. There by the campfire we enjoyed singing our favorite songs. Later in the year came the most important event — the daisy picking. Five o ' clock in the morning found us waiting for the trucks that would carry us to the daisy fields in order to pick the daisies which we would later weave into a chain to honor our big sisters who had meant so much to us. As half of our trek to the frontier has come to a close, we find that we have much in common with the original forty-niners. We have adopted some of their past-times such as square-dancing and sitting around the camp fire but above all, we have kept a spirit as indomitable as theirs. As we press forward to our goal, we have in our treasury many unforgettable memories of our experiences together. 74 Miller, Brown, Carpenter Miss Mary Yarborough Sponsor 75 Vhe 1947 Oak J eavei ©f A A 1 % 3, First roio: Ella Rose Adams Martha Ruth Allen Eunice Melba Andrews Harriet Elizabeth Ashcraft Third row: Rita Evelyn Britt Coleen Brown Geraldine Barbara Brown Grace Brown Second row: Aileen Belton Maxine Bissette Mary Elizabeth Bowen Elizabeth Anne Boykin Fourth row: Annie Mildred Bullard Marguerite Ruth Bullard Lela Ruebell Butts Mary Frances Carpenter First row: Opal Clemmons Madelyn Clinard Carrie Elizabeth Colvard Pauline Elizabeth Cone Third row: Mary Lou Culler Evelyn Bethea Danford Jean Wilson Daniel Martha Marie Davis Second row: Edith Grey Cooper Bertha Elsie Corbett Phoebe Irene Covington Susie Magdalene Creech Fourth row: Sara Elizabeth Davis Mary Lou Dawkins Rosemary Dean Edith Anne Deaton Meredith College Vhe 1947 Oak Jjavei i.no Ci ft f , ft ft (id First roiu: Third row: Jeanne Annette Dickens Mrs. Louise Swicegood Fritts Eva Kitchen Edwards Claudia Jean Gaddy Hazel Hill Ellington Lillian Eileen Gaddy Mary Jane Fetner Virginia Lynn Cerock Second row: Fourth row: Obra Fitzgerald Susan Graham Vivian Jean Fleming Nancy Irene Hall Dorothy Fonville Ruth Gray Hannon Barbara Jane Francis Jewell Ann Harrell 78 First row: Victoria Estelle Harrell Rachel Phyllis Harrington Willie Lee Hart Betty Jean Hefner Third row: Violet Imogene Hundley Mary Louise Hunt Bonnie Sue Jarvis Betty Jean Johnson Second row: Lena Glenn Highfill Evelyn Hunter Hodges Martha Hooks Betty Ann Horton Fourth row: Osee Mac Johnson Isabelle Helene Klingbeil Jacqueline Catherine Knott Margaret Helen Lamb -Meredith College 79 Vhe 1947 Oak Jfavei acvao First row: Pollyanna Langston Anne Laura Lassiter Jane Lassiter Doris Hane Lee Second row: Katherine Susan Lewis Harriette Nelia Littlejohn Eleanor Gertrude Lockamy Betty Jean Lynn Third row: Minta Mclntyre Norma Jean McLamb Daphne McLawhorn Rebecca McGlohon Fourth row: Dorothy Dean McWilliams Geraldine Woodard Miller Peggy Jeannette Mitchell Marianna Mizelle First row: Third row: Frances Curham Moore Harriet Elizabeth Morris Marianna Morris Jennie Lou Newbold Mary Faye Perkins Helen Wilson Phillips Betty Jo Pitman Jacqueline Pittara Second row: Fourth row: Idalia Lee Oglesby Dorothy Lucille Patrick Peggy Jean Patrick Grace Peale Shirley Virginia Powell Julia Powers Carolyn Richardson Eleanor Brownie Roberson 3 (W A ft F 9, e a I 0$ % Mereditk College 81 TJke 1947 Oak JCeave £S£r £) Q ft % GO First row: Third row: Dorothy Rose Sadler Rebecca Ann Spake Mary Lou Sawyer Jane Mary Sparrow Iris Gray Scarborough Frances Stell Spruill Ella May Shirley Ernelle Stanfield Second row: Fourth row: Mary Lois Shuffler Martha Lou Stephenson Frances Alda Smith Janie Anne Stowe Margaret Hope Smith Barbara Snow Swanson Marie Blackwell Snelling Dorothy Marie Swarington 82 First row: Third row: Dorothy Elizabeth Taylor Frances Ruth Ward Mildred Eloise Thomas Ruth Weathers Doris Thomasson Elizabeth Patterson Weston Hazel Crafter Turner Joyce McCann Williams Second row: Fourth row: Joy June Vinson Doris Elinor Williamson Frances Hollis Emma Jean Wilson Marjorie Wall Marie Elise Wilson Appie Walson Marjorie Hunter Wilson A ft et f ytieredith College 83 TJhe 1947 Oak Jleavei f Oft ft Gwen Woodard Marianna Worth Rose Marie Yarbrough Rebecca Yelverton oJ 3re£nman Cla££ OFFICERS MARY LEE RANKIN President KATHLEEN FAULCONER Vice President WINNIE FITZGERALD Secretary DORIS CONCHA Treasurer Lee Rankin, President THIS YEAR has been full of fun, fellowship, and hard work for the Freshman Class. The Stunt for the evening was A Haunting We Will Go. ' ' Our next presentation was a timely one act play, DIET BEGINS TOMORROW. The Committee also appoints the officials who preside over all elections. After nominations made by the Commit- tee have been posted, other nominations may be added, the day before the election, by a petition from a specified number of students. The chairman of the Nominating Committee is the president of the Student Council: other members are the presidents of major organizations, the editors-in-chief of the publications, the college marshal, the Dean of Women, and three faculty members chosen by the Committee.
