This group, changing in personnel through the years, but always remaining devoted to the best interests of the school, formed the Board of Trustees of Meredith College. For whatever accomplishments we have attained , we owe a large measure of gratitude to these friends whose work in our behalf is not less because it is not publicized. B. Hamrick ' MEREDITH COLLEGE -ITS PAS A century ago an ideal was incarnated in the minds of a iew progressive men who could visualize the necessity of higher edu- cation for women. Their ideal was voiced by Thomas Meredith, who, in the State Con- vention of 1838, proposed that the Baptists of North Carolina establish a seminary for young women. The plan was not favorably received, however, and for fifty years it was given no serious conside In 1888 the proposal was renewed by Col- onel L. L. Polk, who asked that a committee of nine members be appointed to consider the expediency of founding a school for young ladies. One year later the recommendations of this committee were adopted, and the long struggle was begun. The committee, increased to twentv-five members, became the first Board of Trustees and entered enthusi- astically on its work. Though discouraged by the almost insurmountable difficulties, the Trustees, true to the ideal, refused to sur- render. In 1 891 they obtained a charter and selected Raleigh as the most appropriate site for the The Board, by a fortunate chance, secured as financial agent a man so intensely inter- ested that he never lost faith in the project. To this man, Oliver Larkin Stringfield, Mere- dith College owes the greatest honor and appreciation, for it was through his efforts that the dream of a college materialized. As he traveled over the state, he stimulated so great an interest in women ' s education that the contributions he received enabled the Board to authorize the construction of the main building. Dr. J. C. Blasingame was chosen President, and on September 27, 1899, the institution opened under the name of the Baptist Fe- male University. To the surprise of everyone the enrollment at this first session was so great that it was necessary to buy another building for the accommodation of the stu- dents who matriculated. Dr. Blasingame resigned after one year of service, and the Board of Trustees elected as President, Dr. Richard Tilman Vann, a member of the original committee of nine. I ' nder the careful guidance of Dr. ' ann the school grew in popularity and prestige ; the preparatory department and the courses lead- ing to the acquiring of an M.A. degree were discontinued; the curriculum was reorganized, and modernized, and the entrance requir were raised. During the fifteen years of Dr. Vann ' s presidency the number of students dou- bled, the faculty increased, and the plant and equipment greatly improved. In 1905 the name of the college was changed to the Baptist University for Women, and four years later, at Dr. Vann ' s suggestion, it became Mere- dith College, in honor of Thomas Meredith. In the fifteen years of his administration Dr. Vann, by his faith, his enthusiasm, and his courageous efforts, established for Meredith the ideals which have made progress possible. Dr. Charles Edward Brewer, who succeeded Dr. Vann, assumed the duties of President in the fall of 1915. For twenty-four years he has so devoted himself to the advance- ment of Meredith that today it is rated as one of the best colleges for women in the United States. Because he is a business man as well as a scholar, Dr. Brewer has been able to execute skillfully many transactions which have led to the advancement of the standards of Meredith. In 1921 the college was admitted to the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Two years later graduates of Meredith were made eli- gible for membership in the American As- of University Women, and in 1928 Meredith was placed on the approved list of the Association of American Universities, at that time the only woman ' s college in North Carolina so honored. One of the greatest achievements in the history of the college was the decision to move to our present site. As the enrollment became larger each year, the former campus became inadequate in size and freedom ; so in 1923, at Dr. Brewer ' s instigation, the Board of Trustees issued bonds to finance the building project. In 1924 the corner- stone was laid and right after the Christmas holidays in 1926 the school moved to its new home, three miles west of the Capitol. Today, under Dr. Brewer ' s able direction, Meredith College is a true example of what faith and diligence can reap, for it indeed lives by the ideals of its founders, that Meredith be dedicated to the glory of sound scholarship, and to the greater glory of God. Upon the seal is stamped the word LUX, which is symbolic of the light of under- standing and of that Light which lightens the world. May those generations which are to follow be guided by that Light and never fail the heritage which is theirs. PRESENT. AND ITS FUTURE CHARLES E. BREWER A.M., Ph.D., LL.D. Treasurer The Athletic Association incorporates every student on the Meredith cam- pus, as all automatically become members upon registration. The leaders of this association constitute the Athletic Association Board, which is com- posed of not only the four major officers, but also fifteen other students who direct the various activities. It has been the purpose of the A. A. for the past year to encourage a spontaneous and unitarian interest in sports. Class cheerleaders were selected for the purpose of fostering this Interest, which has been transplanted in the every day art of living on the campus and has branched off into the various activities, depending on the taste of the individual participant. Playing together has taught the girls, not only to be successful com- petitors, but to uphold all the rules of fair play. This participation in athletics teaches how to be partisan without being prejudiced, sponsors pleasant and valuable contacts, and contributes in the development of a well-rounded life on the campus in order to develop an integrated personality for life after college. THE COACHES BETTY ADKERSON The enthu iasm and energy which our director of sports brings to her contacts with the stu- dents upon the athletic field and in the gym- nasium contribute greatly to the ever-growing popularity of athletics upon our campus. Her untiring efforts and desire for advancement have led our athletic prrgram forward many paces since her arrival at Meredith. GERTRUDE ROYSTER SORRELL Mrs. Sorrell works consistently and with much diligence to carry on her part of the athletic instruction, which deals mostly with the program of Interpretive dancing. By imparting some of her own skill and gracefulness, she develops in her students the charm of being well poised. SNAP TH DITI N S TRADITIONS O, Muse, who in the ancient archives sang To those who sought to find the tangled thread Of history and untie its tortured knots That they might sing of ages which were past And starthng deeds of honor and renown, Speak to us now from thy Parnassian mount, And from thy depth of love direct our song. We sing of our traditions here at school, Of things which girls at Meredith have done Through all the years and handed down to those Who follow in their steps. These are the deeds Which bring about the sunshine and the tears. The laughter and the merriment and fun That echoes down our corridors at times When books are closed and pencils left untrimmed And notebooks on the shelves lie thick in dust. The ties which bind us close are deep and strong As we become a part of Meredith. With passing years we grow into her love; We join devoted throngs of graduates In singing praise of our Alma Mater As at her feet we spend our college years And learn to know and grow to vision glorious. But oh, alas! it was not always so. When first we walked the floors of Stringfield Hall, Full many a tear we shed upon the planks, And to the roof our anguished sighs uprising Proclaimed to the whole campus our homesickness. ' Twas then we felt the comfort of tradition For who should come to hear our wail of sorrow, To comfort all our woes, put grief to flight, Take us for walks in quest of hamburgers. And give advice but our beloved Big Sister ? She spoke to us from depths of her experience For was she not a junior, we mere freshmen? Upon her head we poured our gratitude And thanked the stars which shone above the court- yard That here at school the freshmen were adopted And rightfully and lawfully were given Each to a junior to be Little Sisters. But wait a bit, my little homesick freshmen. Around the corner lies another pleasure For you are being rushed with flowers, candy. Doughnuts and pickles, gum and delegations Who come each night at ten and settle calmly Upon your bed and ask the fateful question Are you to be an Astro or a Phi? The wise won ' t answer; they evade the issue. For then the rushing will be more exciting. But if you do not know of what they ' re speaking. They eagerly will tell to you the story: How that at Meredith there are two bodies, Astros and Phis, societies literary, Of which each girl selects the one to join. Much honor is then given to the group Winning the most girls on Decision Day, So then each group gives bribes and puts on parties To woo and win the girls into its favor. Meet Billy Astro, the goat who is the mascot Most highly scented, standing in the courtyard; And Phi-do Bear, a cub who climbs a tree And scampers round far as his chain will let him. Make up your mind, and then come into chapel To walk between the files of cheering girls Out of a door — Say! Is it Phi or Astro? TRADITIONS To study up perhaps for midsemesters Or do last month ' s supply of parallel. What next is on our program, do you ask? Ah, just before us, not so far away We can see Stunt Day loom its merry head And every class is caught in feverish haste Devising, writing up a wondrous play With costumes, staging, music, plot and all Quite new and different. What a task! What work! What breathless waiting while the judges meet. And finally, what cheers burst from wild throats When they announce the winner of the prize And then award the cup. And ' tis not all, For tin cups then are given to the classes Which won events during the afternoon, Such as the big parade (the Palio) , The horse race in which girls from every class Adorned with horses ' heads dash round the circle To a triumphant finish. We know too Of the original song of every class For which a cup is given to the winner, The class which sings the best, and to the writer Of the best words and music for a song Goes forth a separate prize of five whole dollars. Yet far ahead a gleam of morning brightens. What see we here? The Christmas holidays! And ere we go our way with hearts rejoicing We rise at four o ' clock in the cold dawning Of our last day, and we go forth to carol, Riding in buses, standing in a huddle, Singing discords, harmony at random. Coming back to breakfast with a vengeance. Sleeping through the necessary classes. Such then is Stunt Day, and And take our books up to the library Spring comes on and then tradition thickens; Seniors smile and whisper to each other, While, armed with flashlights, overalls, and kerchiefs, The juniors crawl in unfamiliar places, Looking, searchmg, finding in a corner Some clue in code, which might, if they are lucky. Lead them on nearer, nearer, ever nearer To that odd place in which the Crook reposes Just where the seniors hid it in the summer. TRADITIONS All of the freshmen (juniors ' Little Sisters ) Come out at times to help them in the seeking. So the hunt goes, and so go on the juniors Crawling, looking, searching, hoping, longing. In a great game, the like of which has never Been equalled or excelled by Giants or Yankees. Soph Day Off rolls round in all its glory And all the sophomores roll up their shirt sleeves, Claiming on that day complete possession Of every freshman, of her dress and actions. While seniors and the juniors stand to watch them, Defending in the way of all Big Sisters. Then baseball practices produce fair players And so the girls write letters to their fathers Challenging them to a game of baseball. And lawyers, farmers, merchants, druggists, doctors Take up their bats and balls and play with their daughters Behold the ones who have excelled in classwork. With extra A ' s and B ' s in profuse number. In evening dress they march in solemn order Into the chapel with the two new members To listen to a lecture quite scholastic — A high mark of the year, and quite an honor! Oh! can this be Commencement round the corner? Indeed it is, and we have come to Class Day When our dear seniors have their final frolic Marching to the grove and walking downward Through the aisle of gold and yellow daisies On a chain held by their Little Sisters, Who, ere daybreak, rose up from their couches, Seeking daisies in the fields and meadows That they might make from these the chain of flowers. TRADITIONS On we go, and find ourselves now seated In the auditorium with societies Having their big evening. Look! See the platform! Silver Shield is tapping in new members. Look! That girl! She ' s coming down the stairway. She will touch some junior on the shoulder As a signal that she ' s been selected. Oh, she ' s stopping! See? Who is she tapping? And lo we see them now in caps and black gowns Marching by two ' s the last time up our aisle. Some drenched with tears, some dreamy, some re- gretful. Carrying a diploma and a Bible Given to them to bless them on their way By Meredith, belov ' d Alma Mater. Cheers, applause — another girl is coming! Bonfires blaze and round it stand the seniors. One by one they fling into its red flames The things which most have spoiled their joy at college. Text books perhaps, or shoes, or hats or pictures. A last farewell to what they most have hated. Live on, traditions. Bring to other students The joys you ' ve brought us. Let our hall ring long With other laughter, other voices singing The songs we sang. Let other hands take up Our pencils and our Daisy Chains. Let love Surround our oak-groved college and proclaim Forever blessed our loved Meredith. We often from our little realm Step out to meet the greater tow To shop for sodas, dresses, shoes, Or just to poke and nose around. fNTfR TAYLOR ' S The Show Place of the Carolines Offers the Faculty and Students of Meredith College a Store Unsurpassed in the South With Fifteen Departments, Sells Practically Everything Desired — Usually Showing the New Things First.
