During the twenty-three years that he has entertained young pilgrims on the road to graduation, he has learned just how to care for each of us; he has greeted each girl at her arrival, watched over her during her stay, and sent her out on the greater pilgrimage of life with faith in her success. ®Ij ®ak BiJ awa S. rrgnry iDiimbour DEAN ®Jl ®ak Sl awa Anna Mn lak r B.A., M.A. DEAN OF WOMEN El}t ®ak H au B iFarultg Vera Tart Marsh OFFICERS OF .hslstam Dean of Women ADMINISTRATION Ethel Evakgeline English, B.S , M.A. Adviser of Freslimen Fuller Broughton Hamrick, A.B. The athletic program has not only benefited the individual student, but has also fostered a class spirit which is essential to college life. This challenge to good sportsmanship has not extended to students alone. After a long session of practicing, the class tournament was played, with the freshmen winning the championship. This freshman team, led by Ellen Mclntyre, came through to defeat the seniors, champions of two years past, by one point. Besides the class games, there were games played by the hall teams, the varsity game, and, at the climax of the season, that sensational, side- splitting frolic by the seniors and faculty. Can ' t you see us with our flashlights Searching high and low? Have you seen that crooked stick? We should like to know. That ' s the junior class song from the first night in February to the first Saturday night in May. And why? Because sometime during the summer that secretive person, the president of the Senior Class, hid a wobbly black stick with a crooked head somewhere on the Meredith campus, and now the juniors want that stick more than anything else in the world. There aren ' t many things, either, juniors won ' t do for the sake of the crook. They will look huge, shiny cockroaches and spooky, scrawly spiders bravely in the eye; they will risk a new permanent and a manicure to the dangers of the underworld the night before the Junior-Senior; they will mount courageously the thousands (?) of steps on the watertank, when hanging curtains was a perilous task before. Self is forgotten. The class and the crook are all-important. Heartaches don ' t come from torn clothes and bruised legs. They come from passing, a few minutes before twelve on the fatal night, the spot where the crook rests peacefully. The aches come, this year for the first time, from looking vainly for nights for a new little leather-bound clue — vainly, because the last one found has been decoded incorrectly. But the joy of finding a clue, the nice little bull sessions that make life worth living, the good sportsmanship of fellow-classmates, the plans for re-hiding the much-wished for crook, and, above all, the hope that the crook will wear mourning instead of senior class colors on Class Day make crooking live as one of the most intense pleasures at Meredith.
