Alma Mater, we salute thee with a song; At thy feet our loyal hearts their tribute lay; We had waited for thy coming, in the darkness waited long, Ere the morning star proclaimed thy natal day. Thou hast come through tribulation, and thy robe is clean and white: Thou art fairer than the summer in its bloom. Thou art born unto a kingdom, and thy crown is all of light; Thou shalt smile away the shadow and the gloom. In thy paths the fields shall blossom, and the desert shall rejoice. In the wilderness a living fountain spring; For the blind shall see thy beauty, and the deaf shall hear thy voice, And the silent tongues their high hosannas sing. Where the rhododendron blushes on the burly mountain ' s breast. In the midland where the wild deer love to roam, Where the water-lily slumbers, while the cypress guards its rest, Lo! Thy sunny land of promise and thy home. Where the sons of Carolina taught a nation to be free, And her daughters taught their brothers to be brave! O ' er a land of peaceful plenty, from the highlands to the sea, May thy banner. Alma Mater, ever wave! Oak Leaves MEREDITH COLLEGE THE COLLEGE SIGHTS i AND INSIGHTS SALEM COLLEGE, WINSTON-SALEM. N. All hail. Alma Mater, Dear Mother, to thee, Thy daughters true, faithful and loyal will be. THE BATTLEFIELD STATE TEACHER ' S, FREDERICKSBURG, VA. ATHLETICS THE OAK LEAVES Mrs. Gertrude Rovster Sorrell Athletic Director For this year the Athletic Association has tried to plan the activities so that as many of the girls on the campus as possible would be included, thus stimulating a stronger interest in the class teams, varsity teams, and individual ability. At the beginning of the school year a point system was introduced to endeavor to raise the value of the monogram and to hold the girls ' interest over a greater length of time. This system also encourages the girls to go out for some of the other sports that before were considered too strenuous. The records kept under the point system show an increased average attendance for each major sport. Nearly one hundred girls came out for the hockey and basketball season. A large number of girls that did not go out for any of the winter sports went out for tennis and track in the spring. Wholesome competition has existed from the beginning to the end in the struggle for the pos- session of the hockey and basketball cups to say nothing of the class spirit shown in preparation for the annual stunt night sponsored by the Association. Individual ability, as well as group cooperation, is recognized by presenting the girl with her monogram when she has earned one thousand points. Also, a hockey stick is given by the Junior class to the best all-round hockey player. Martha Messenger received the stick this year. Then for the first time at commence- ment small loving cups are to be presented to the girls winning the tennis championship in singles and doubles. . ' t this time also the Victory Trophy is to be awarded to Meredith ' s AU- Round Sport. ndred fifty-four MEREDITH COLLEGE McCouRRY Mr. McCourry ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Officers Ruth McCourry President Mr. E.
