The Organizations PUBLICATIONS CLUBS SOCIETIES ATHLETICS Four The Features SUPERLATIVES AND ADVERTISEMENTS Alma Mater We salute thee, Alma Mater, we salute thee with a song; At thy feet our loyal hearts their tribute lay; We had waited for thy coming, in the darkness waited long. Ere the morning star proclaimed thy natal day. Thou hast come through tribulation, and thy robe is clean and white! Thou art fairer than the summer in its bloom. Thou art born unto a kingdom, and thy crown is all of light; Thou shalt smile away the shadow and the gloom. In thy paths the fields shall blossom, and the desert shall rejoice. In the wilderness a living fountain spring; For the blind shall see thy beauty, and the deaf shall hear thy voice, And the silent tongues their high hosannas sing. Where the rhododendron blushes on the burly mountain s breast. In the midland where the wild deer love to roam. Where the water-lily slumbers, while the cypress guards its rest, Lo! Thy sunny land of promise and thy home. Where the sons of Carolina taught a nation to be free, And her daughters taught their brothers to be brave; O ' er a land of peaceful plenty, from the highlands to the sea May thy banner. The pianos in the music building which usually kept up a simultaneous clamor on mixed keys were silent, and only the efforts of some ambitious organ student could be heard. Would the endless exercises never cease? As if in answer to the unarticulated question, the music ended abruptly. At last who- ever it was had realized that she had practiced enough. However, the silence was not to last, for no sooner had the final exercise died away than a flood of popular melody floated into my window. Rollicking jazz tunes and dreamy waltzes followed each oth;r in succession. The organ student was having one last fling before she left. Presently 1 heard the sound of that plaintive tune, Memories. I stopped addressing commencement in- vitations and laid down my pen. I had to hear that piece. The organ student played on. With the approach of commencement my memories were of the four years that were drawing to a close. How short they had seeined ! And yet they had been happy years, very happy years — so different from what I and many other freshmen thought they ever could be on that dreary rainy Tuesday, September 4, 1928, when the Class of ' 32 made its first entrance to Meredith. It was too bad that we had not at that time heard Dr. Clausen ' s rendition of Singing in the Rain ; but it was not until the graduation of our big sisters in 1932 that every one was entranced by his commencement address. During that same commencement the Class of ' 32 realized that it was assuming a new dignity. On Monday after class day exer- cises in the grove it had been with a feeling of pride that we formed 32 with the daisy chain on the library steps, signifying by this that the responsibilities and even class traditions left by the seniors were ours to carry on. The music in the auditorium continued. Beautiful to see, but reminding me of a faded sum- mer love, complained the organ. Instantly there flashed before my mind a jumble of pictures: Jelly Leftwich wielding his baton with characteristic jiggle; Edwina Martin waving bits of cardboard over her head and exhorting, Seniors, sell your five tickets. That was when we seniors sponsored the Duke Musical Club Concert. The organ student must have been reminiscing also, for in a momeiit the melody, When I ' m calling you-oo-00, came ringing through the night, recalling Margaret Peacock presiding at the banquet we gave the seniors in 1931. The Feast of the Ojibways was a high light in our history to be equalled only by the junior-senior banquet recently given in our honor. I came to the present with a start. There were those four dozen invitations still waiting. Who was next on my list? Oh, yes, Oreon. Well, her last name might be Moncrief now, but to me she ' d always be Oreon Bostick and our sophomore president. Under her leadership our Theft of the Romany Trail brought us recognition when, for the second time, we won second place on Stunt Night. And this time we did not forget that our president should have flowers for the occasion, as we had when we were freshmen. At any rate, we insist that Gaynelle was an individual freshman president on that 1928 Stunt Night. I wrote steadily for several minutes furiously checking names off of my list to the accompani- ment of mad syncopation and dreamy melodies. Presently there was a pause, and then — Through the sunshine and tears Of our dear college years You ' re the queen of our hearts, Alma Mater. I did not think of any definite instances of the past four years, but, like the sun in the east when it is rising, a vision of four joyous years rose in my mind. Suddenly my door was flung open, and my roommate rushed in. Forgetting my reverie and the accompanying music, I listened attentively to an account of her evening out. .
