C- CARLYLE CAMPBELL LIBRARY MEREDITH COLLEGE DEDICATION 0 the spirit of the T)utch, whose scenery and costumes are depicted in the illustra- tions of this hook, and f whom all people everywhere might learn the lessons of dustry and independence, we dedicate the 1931 volume of the Oak Leaves I M 1 FOREWORD C jANY are the things which we, in the pride of our efforts, are hoping for this volume of the OAK LEAVES. First, we are hoping that it may strengthen the loyalty to our oAlma ater, which we feel to be embedded in the hearts of each of you. cAnd then, we hope that in the years which are yet to come it will prove a joy to you during the inevitable moments of reminiscence. Finally, with sincere hu- mility, we dare to hope that, as you turn through the pages of this book, you will catch something of the joy which was ours in its making. 9 66 i 3 ALMA MATER We salute thee, oAlma iSMater, we salute thee with a cAt thy feet our loyal hearts their tribute lay; We had waited for thy coming, in the darkness waited Ere the morning star proclaimed thy natal day. Thou hast come through tribulation, and thy robe is clean and white! Thou art fairer than the summer in its bloom. Thou art horn unto a kingdom, and thy crown is all of light; Thou shall smile away the shadow and the gloom. In thy paths the fields shall blossom, and the desert shall rejoice. In the wilderness a living fountain spring; For the blind shall see thy beauty, and the deaf shall hear thy voice, a4nd the silent tongues their high hosannas sing. Where the rhododendron blushes on the burly mountain ' s breast. In the midland where the wild deer love to roam. Where the water-lily slumbers, while the cypress guards its rest, Lo! Thy sunny land of promise and thy home. 3n iifmnnam (§, ffi. trin ftf lit iHan9, 1B51 STpbruarH 1. 1930 THE COLLEGE CAMPUS r- m-y ' ' nff rj mir . - - ' v m m ' avf z s FACULTY I93J OaA aavey ■1931 GoA Xi e xi e J. Muses a while on Autumn glory gone. Sees for a while the quiet snow-hushed nii lits, Knows nj the summer shadows on the lawn. So lias it seemed for us who have been here Four years that are much as one brief year ' s space And in those years nue spent, now looking back, Signs of one Inne year ' s seasons we may trace. First madutp days and a rollicking wind, Rustle of leaves new-fallen and gold, Bitter, grey smoke of brushwood fire. And sighing days when the wind blows cold. Days when the world is alive with youth, Yet a dream may fade at the gay year ' s turning; But still there ' s the stir of a vague, sweet brcKC, .hid a heart ' s unanswered yearning. Then sparkle and glitter and glint of snow. Sunlight a-gleam and the whole world bright. .ind a still, white peace like a dream descends On the wings of the snow-wrapped night. Yet there ' s. the glow of an orange fire, .Ind apples, a-shine and a tea kettle ' s tune, And a merry heart and a laughing cry, .4nd a clear, white light of moon. Then is the summer Ifilh roses a-hlooi And a peace of mil. And a hauiitino I time of our years ■I in the gold sunliiiht, d and a quiet of heart, caiity of s. ' ars at night. So Springtime dreams as we have dreamed On a past that is and a time to be — .Fnd a song sings itself in the heart of us — To a wordless and plaintive melody. Oh, glory of .lulumn and It ' intertime And quiet and peace of Summer ' s ways Are a part of the song Spring weaves for herself. And a part of our College days. 1931 OaA i W J ea ve History of ' 31 Juninr-Freshman spiril lasts — These bones gonna rise aija ' m: Settle right down in the Freshman Class — These bones gonna rise again. Yes, ive know it, know it; Indeed we know it, know it; Oil, yes, we know it, know it — These bones gonna rise again! Such was the song that greeted our ears as we, the Class of ' 31, first arrived at Meredith. Our big sisters in the Junior Class sang it to us again and again, and instilled within us all the true loyalty that every odd has to odd spirit and to bones and devils and gloves. We feel that our odd spirit has helped us to accomplish much since we have been at Meredith. A glimpse at our class presidents is sufficient to show that we have had capable and interested leaders. First of all, there was Sarah Briggs, a Raleigh girl; then Irene Thomas, of Rocky Mount. The next year we chose Ruth Philips, of Sanford, and our Senior year Evelyn ] IcCall, of Marion. We owe much to these girls, for they have led us through many difficult circumstances and have brought us out on top every time. To prove that we have dramatic ability, we only ask you to recall ;; Dutch, our Freshman stunt, and Kvas, our Sophomore stunt. Our last two years we have really made a name for ourselves in this field by taking the loving cup both times — first, with Springs of ' qq, our Junior year, and, finally, with Polar Stars and Stripes, our Senior year. Many and memorable have been the social events in which we as a class have participated. Never shall we forg-.-t the Senior breakfast in the gro e which was given for us our Sophomore year. We shall remember fondly the Junior-Senior banquet our Junior year and the banquet given for us our Senior year. These and many more are cherished memories. Soph day off was our first chance for displaying our real odd spirit. At this time we wore black gloves on our left hands, and in the evening dined at Old Mere- dith. It was at the close of this year that our big sisters graduated, leaving us to uphold all the traditions of the odd classes. The next year we had the responsibility of helping one hundred and fifty little sisters become adjusted to Alma Mater. We soon found them worthy of odd spirit and taught them our songs and customs. We have spent four gloriously happy years together, and now that we are saying our farewells we are proud to remember that we have tried to uphold Alma Mater in what we have done. May Odd Spirit never grow old! The very voril Sophomore recalls memories — of red devils, gamecocks, exultant crowing from the third floor, the numerals on the water tank, the bell tolling the midnight hour of Hallowe ' en and — who knows? — perhaps the freshmen ' s rendezvous with death! But what is there about the word sophomore which brings up such suggestive memories? Cer- tainly the meaning of the word cannot in itself account for so much. The word sophomore, we are told (for verification I refer you to Webster), means wise foal. Nothing so magic about that — quite the opposite. The word is so contradictory as to be absurd. However, the one consolation might be that it is much more pleasant to he called a wise fool than some other types of fool frequently mentioned — and seen. But such was not my feeling when I became a sophomore. I didn ' t feel like a fool — though I may have acted like one. But then maybe I had too much self-satisfaction in my make-up! However, my first experiences as a sophomore were very pleasant. It was quite a thrill to realize that I had risen above the level of a freshman and had become at least an upper- classman — even though it was the third in line. I shall never forget my exguisite elation, rare excitement, and an indescribable inner feeling — or what have you — when I first came back to school as an upperclassman. As I walked in to register, I saw all the wondering-faced fresh- men glancing dazedly around and asking what matriculate meant. I wondered if they felt as unacclimated as they looked — sublimely forgetful of the many dumb breaks I made on my first day at Meredith, the remembrance of which even yet makes me blush with embarrassment and which I refuse absolutely to repeat. But little it mattered to me that I had once been a freshman. I was a sophomore now. And there are no words to describe the thrill I got when a freshman asked me for advice about ory of the time ;d with awe in Certainly they m sure every .enty-one hours etc., ad one fixing her schedule or changing her roommate! I shall always cling to the met I overheard a freshman who, as she pointed me out to her companion, whispei her voice, Is she a sophomore? Thrills? Yes. And thrills of another kind, too— almost thrills of horror. were thrills of mild terror. Why? Sophomore requirements to be met. Meredith student who has ever been a sophomore has muttered gloomily, Tw of education for an A certificate, six hours of science with four hours lab. per infinitum, ad nauseam. Why, oh why were required courses ever invented? And has yet been able to answer that conundrum. It is one of those pointless jokes — there is no answer. The only thing for a poor soph to do is to clutch her books hopefully, prayerfully, in her hands and march stoically to class, muttering Allah aklas in the general direction of Mecca. Yes, there were thrills of all kinds — and mostly enjoyable ones. It took me at least three weeks to come down to earth and realize that being a sophomore did not make me any different from the freshman I had been. But somehow, after it ' s all over, the thrills don ' t seem exactly real. They seem fantastic — precious. The idiotic escapades, which only a sophomore would think up, are remembered almost with reverence. Our go(.d times we see dimly — because of misty eyes? — through an enchanting haze of the rainbow colors of the Odd Classes. Long may they wave!
