The Stage Coacli Jomreey LL of 111) lift I had looked forward to the tinu- when I would be old enough to take the stage coach trip from High Schole to Conimencementowii. This was a special trip for young ladies and gentlemen desiring to acquire for themselves a more cosmopolitan view of life. However, the trip that I wanted to take was only for young ladies hose ages varied from sixteen to twenty-two years. The coach line was old and well established and all of the papers were full of pictures and praiseworthy accounts of some new coaches that had been put into use. These coaches were quite up-to-date and modern, and they pleased the occupant exceedingly. I could hardly wait until the time when I could see for myself what the stage coaches really were like. My mother told me that I must know something of traveling before I started on such a long journey alone. Thereupon I was given a series of lessons on how to con- duct myself upon various occasions that would arise in the course of my trip. At length, after much gruelling, I was seemingly prepared. Having packed my bag and told e erybc ly good-bye, I went down to the usual stopping place of the coach. Vhen I climbed in I found that there were lots of girls with whom I should like to make friends and soon we were chatting merrily about every thought that had ever entered our heads. It is too long to give a detailed account of that interesting stage coach as it rattled along its way, but I will give some excerpts from my journal that I kept on my trip. September, 1926 Everything has been most interesting on this trip because I have met so many lovely people and have seen so many strange and delightful things. Today we decided for Eleanor Covington to sit on the driver ' s seat, where she can point out all of the interesting things and tell us if we are coming to any bumps. We do not even mind the bumps, however, because they are a part of the trip. Something exciting happened this morning. A band of lusty rogues known as Sophomores halted us and made us line up and do homage to them. Even though my heart nearly stopped beating with fear, I was fascinated by the.-e people. October, 1926 Tonight, while we were halting after a strenuous da ' ' s journey, we decided to present some stunts for the general amusement of everybody. I was interested in one that we called All in a Lifetime. It seems to be quite the thing to present these playlets. We shall do so at the next favorable time. September, 1927 Today we decided that Salinda Perry should climb up on the driver ' s seat to direct us on the next part of our journey. October, 1927 Tonight we presented another series of stunts and would you believe it — we got second place! Ours was called Pirate Love OAK LEAVES November, 1927 While we had stopped for the night, a crowd of us who had been in the party for about the same length of time decided to take a Soph Night Off, as it is popularly called. When we returned to our night ' s abode, we found that some of the more recent members of our party had tried to play a trick on us and had ransacked our belongings. We gave them a piece of our minds, but they were so penitent that we soon forgave them. May, 1928 While we halted to let off some fellow passenger, we saw nearby a field of daisies. We immediately decided to make a daisy chain and march around our friends who were leaving, singing to them a farewell song. After our short cere- mony, we decked the coach with our daisy chain and climbed in to resume our journey. September, 1928 We selected Margaret Craig to sit on the driver ' s high seat for the third lap of our journey. Of course, we had numerous short stops, but there really were only four main parts of our trip. October, 1928 Stopping for the night we again gave a series of stunts. Ours was entitled Hello, Mars and it really won the siher goblet that the winner could keep until it was won by someone else. We were quite overjoyed. April, 1929 While passing through a Io ely wood that resembled Robin Hood ' s Sherwood of Merry England, we decided that it would be a fitting place to entertain our fellow pas.sengers who were leaving at the i:e t stop. Thereupon we spread a feast and made merry with song and chorus. September, 1929 For the last lap of our journey we selected (ilcniu ' e Paul to ha e the honored seat in front. October, 1929 We decided to present a series of stunts for the last time and ours was called Can ' ou Imagine It? Kind fate was not with us this time and we were forced to relinqin ' sh our bold on the silver gnblet to our friendly ri a]s. March, 1930 Our fellow passengers gave us, whose trip is almost over, a lovely banquet. It was a token that we shall long remember. June, 1930 At last we reached Commencementown after many exciting things have happened and we have think that this delightful journey is all over. Thus you have some excerpts from my journal.
