THE ANNUNCIATION You heard the heralding of Loveliness Blown down the ages from Eternity, From lands beyond the farthest star and sea, On silken winds that knew the swift caress Of angel's wings. You sensed His sweet distress, Whose dear delight before the world began, Was to be playing with the race of man- All of their toys, their stories to possess. And now, all women who live after thee, Though they be poor and weak, nor wise, Hold in their hearts a silent laughter. See, They fold away the mantle of the skies And lift their tiny lads with dignity To still the longing in the God-Child's eyes. THE MEASURE OF MY GRATITUDE I searched for something kind enough to give y A bird sang high above me in the sky, My clasped hand could not hold the butterfly That mounted waivering into the blue. Not one of them endured, nor would the dew, Eternally, of all sweet graces shed, Gently on your tall veil-shrouded head, Give back again what I have gained from you. Love is a perfume from a broken jar Stored with spice and rose leaves in an hour Of summer sun. And love may not intrude, But comes surely, as the light of stars Lit long ago. And so my own life's power Must be the measure of my gratitude. CFM' Mother Bargirzl POEM FOR A PAINTER This night I saw A thin, white moon Snared in the twin High towers of Mercyhurst, Caught there, held captive For the space of a sigh: A small bright halo With no head to glorify. Page 54 O A TRIBUTE You are queenly- With the queenliness of lilies On an April morn, You are comforting With the comfort of silence To a heart grief-torn, You are calm With the calmness of the sea After a storm. You are aloof With the aloofness of tall poplars On a summer day- Yet I have seen you kind, Like baby willows When soft winds go astray. Your will4immutable as stone On sun-dried clay, Yet my mind sees your tears Where the dead Christ lay. Your eyes are blue! With the blueness of heaven Whence the gold SEATS peer, They hold a deep serenity So peaceful-clear. Uno the Dean of Reridenteb REMINISCEN CE 1 TO MERCYHURST Memory Can often be A searing stab of fire- A hallowed wish That could not beg An unfulfilled desire. But a ling'ring thought Of that dear place And mem'ry somehow seems The silken stuff That fairies weave For a tapestry of dreams.
