'1 y I f I f' I MICHAEL JAMES RELIHAN, M.A., LL.D FORE ORD Every thing that is beautiful rnust have its beginning in a drearn, which then becornes a thought, and, after that, a prayer, long before it grows into a fact to be clothed in flesh, or stone, or silver. The dream, alone, rernains as God has given it. 'The fnished tapestry is an irnitation of the sublime vision which inspired itj and where the thought is pure enough, and the prayer hurnble enough, there are few imperfections in the work. God gave a drearn to the Sisters of MEVLQI. Theirs was a glorious drearn that soon grew into a thought and deepened into prayer. The Sisters built splendid Gothic towers of brick and stone, and set the structure high on a hill where all the winds of Heaven could blow upon it. They called their drearn Mercpfhurst. It is the house of a dreani that will never be endedj for the Sisters have builded, not onbf with bricks and stone, but with kindness and gentleness, grace and courtesy, with wisdonz and with love. And their dreani lives in the life of each one of you who walks these halls. Mercyhurst has given you her vision of perfection, has trained your thought,-has deepened your spirituality In you the drearn has been translated into terrns of life, into the reality of beautiful Christian wornanhood. By me they are transformed from strangers at the gates of learning to satisfied dwellers within the portals of knowledge, from an existence of scant acquaintance with the purveyors of truth to friendly familiarity with the giant intellects that have shaped the destiny of the human race. By my alchemy, the faltering footsteps of perplexity are transmuted into the firm tread of assurance, and the morass of dangerous scepticism into the solid ground of moral certitude-I AM ALMA MATER. In the Greek theater of the great dramatic period of Euripides and Aeschylus, choral verse formed an integral part of every entertainment. Hundreds of men dressed in long flowing robes took their places and, with all the solemnity of a true religious service, blended their voices, half song and half speech, with the tragic action of the drama. Roman youths in their togas carried on the same tradition. In the Christian dispensation we have glorious examples of musical verse. The chanting of the psalms on feast days, the chanting of the divine office in religious houses are all beautiful examples of choric work. In fact, the art of verse-speaking has persevered for centuries, never being entirely lost. About 15 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. john Maselield sponsored the first modern verse- speaking choir, the purpose of which was to move the audience, emotionally, pro- foundly. Always alert to new opportunities in the field of education, Mercyhurst first undertook the training of a verse-speaking choir in 19375 and under the direction of Beatrice A. Mulcahy, B. L. I., its progress has been swift. Members of the Mercyhurst choral group feel that it has helped them to speak more lucidly, to feel more strongly, to appreciate more profoundly.
