MARSHA DEAN PENIX As I stand here upon this hill, Looking out over the world held so dear, I see a life filled with many goals Some accomplished, many shattered and some Yet to be fulfilled. A life in which many friends have been made and Dear ones lost. Where crises have occurred and almost brought This life to an end, yet exaltations have Kept it going and alive. A life that sees the world as a beautiful one With many great things to offer, many Events to conquer, and many people to help. Yet this life could not have gone through These events without parents, And great parents they have been! Written by Marsha Penix 20 DIANE ELIZABETH MORRIS When you have to attend to things of that sort, to the mere incidents of the surface, the reality-the reality, I tell you-fades. The inner truth is hidden-luckily, luckily.

ALECIA LYNNE MASON When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest! If you must-but never quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won if he'd stuck it outg Stick to your task though the pace seems slow- You may succeed with one more blow. Success is failure turned inside out- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt- And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afarg Stick to the fight when you're hardest hit It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit 'frrmf , ' :,-,- rw - it STEPHANIE ANNE MORGAN COMES THE DAWN After awhile you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul, and you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security. And you begin to understand that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises. And you begin to accept your defeats with your head held high and your eyes open, with the grace of a woman not the grief of a child. You learn to build your roads on today be- cause tomorrowls ground is too uncertaing for plans and future have a way of falling down in mid-flight. After awhile you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much, so you plant your garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flow- ers. And you learn that you really can endure that you really are strong and you really do have worth. And you learn and learn . . . and you learn, with every good-bye you learn. Veronica Shoffstall 19

LISA DESIREE TOLBERT The World Would Be A Nicer Place If Traveled At A Slower Pace Amid stresses and strains Much too many to mention, And pressure-packed days Filled with turmoil and tension, We seldom have time To be friendly or kindi' For we're harassed and hurried And always behind- And while we've our gadgets And buttons to press Making leisure hours greater And laboring hours less, And our standards of living They claim have improved And repressed inhibitions I Have been freed and removed, It seems all this progress And growth are for naught, For daily we see A world more distraught- So what does it matter If man reaches his goal And gains the whole world But loses his soul - For what have we won If in gaining this end We've been much too busy To be kind to a friend, And what is there left To make the heart sing When life is a cold And mechanical thing And we are but puppets Of controlled automation Instead of joint heirs To God's gift of creation. Helen Steiner Rice Thank you Mother, Daddy, Janet, Tracy and Daved for all of your love and support these past three years. I love you! 21
