Mercy School of Nursing 1921 Vail Ave. --..,.' if . r v . .f , 1 , l Y ' f Dedication As we entered the halls of Mercy School of Nursing for the very first time, a feeling of overwhelming anxiety filtered through each one of us. As the years passed and our knowledge grew, we realized just how much we have yet to learn. We knew, however, that no matter what, the instructors would always be there. As we face the strange and foreign world of reality, we begin to look back at our years here and must remember someone who stood out among the rest. She was there with a smile as we waded through the jungle of critical care, guiding us, and reassuring us through all the stress. You better know your stuffn sheid say, and we would commit ourselves to do our best. Through all the lines, tubes, and monitoring, we know that she is a real person, someone to whom we all can relate. Thank you for being you, and as our graduation approaches, we wonit soon forget. The class of 1988 would proudly like to dedicate this annual to a wonderful, cool lady, Ms. Susie Elkins. 2 s. Susie Elkins At work and at play. Happiness can be felt only if you don't set conditions. Arthur Rubinstein 16 LISA ELAINE BAILEY The Gift of Friendship Friendship is a priceless gift That cannot be bought or sold, But its value is far greater Than a mountain made of gold- For gold is cold and lifeless, It can neither see nor hear, And in the time of trouble It is powerless to cheer- It has no ears to listen, No heart to understand It cannot bring you comfort Or reach out a helping hand- So when you ask God for a gift Be thankful if he sends, Not diamonds, pearls, or riches, But the love of a real true friend. KIMBERLY RENE CARTER There are places I remember All my life, though some have changed. Some forever not for better. Some have gone and some remain. Though these places had their moments Of people and friends I still can recall, I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I've loved them all . . . Lennon and McCartney ELIZABETH FRIEDHEIM Guard within yourself that treasure, kindness Know how to give without hesitation, How to lose without regret, How to acquire without meanness. Know how to replace in your heart, By the happiness of those you love, The happiness that may be winting to yourself. George Sand 17 f KIMBERLY DANA HUGGINS DON'T EVER Don't ever feel guilty about the past-What is done is done. Learn from any mistakes you might have made. Don't ever feel that you are alone-There is always someone there for you to reach out to. Don't ever forget that you can achieve so many of the things you can imagine-Imagine that! It's not as hard as it seems. Don't ever stop loving, Don't ever stop believing, Don't ever stop dreaming your dreams. 18 ANGELA RENE GILBERT Look to this day! Yesterday is but a dream And tomorrow is only a vision But today, well lived, makes Every yesterday a dream of happiness, And every tomorrow a vision of hope. 'QP' ALECIA LYNNE MASON When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest! If you must-but never quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won if he'd stuck it outg Stick to your task though the pace seems slow- You may succeed with one more blow. Success is failure turned inside out- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt- And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afarg Stick to the fight when you're hardest hit It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit 'frrmf , ' :,-,- rw - it STEPHANIE ANNE MORGAN COMES THE DAWN After awhile you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul, and you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security. And you begin to understand that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises. And you begin to accept your defeats with your head held high and your eyes open, with the grace of a woman not the grief of a child. You learn to build your roads on today be- cause tomorrowls ground is too uncertaing for plans and future have a way of falling down in mid-flight. After awhile you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much, so you plant your garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flow- ers. And you learn that you really can endure that you really are strong and you really do have worth. And you learn and learn . . . and you learn, with every good-bye you learn. Veronica Shoffstall 19 MARSHA DEAN PENIX As I stand here upon this hill, Looking out over the world held so dear, I see a life filled with many goals Some accomplished, many shattered and some Yet to be fulfilled. A life in which many friends have been made and Dear ones lost. Where crises have occurred and almost brought This life to an end, yet exaltations have Kept it going and alive. A life that sees the world as a beautiful one With many great things to offer, many Events to conquer, and many people to help. Yet this life could not have gone through These events without parents, And great parents they have been! Written by Marsha Penix 20 DIANE ELIZABETH MORRIS When you have to attend to things of that sort, to the mere incidents of the surface, the reality-the reality, I tell you-fades. The inner truth is hidden-luckily, luckily. LISA DESIREE TOLBERT The World Would Be A Nicer Place If Traveled At A Slower Pace Amid stresses and strains Much too many to mention, And pressure-packed days Filled with turmoil and tension, We seldom have time To be friendly or kindi' For we're harassed and hurried And always behind- And while we've our gadgets And buttons to press Making leisure hours greater And laboring hours less, And our standards of living They claim have improved And repressed inhibitions I Have been freed and removed, It seems all this progress And growth are for naught, For daily we see A world more distraught- So what does it matter If man reaches his goal And gains the whole world But loses his soul - For what have we won If in gaining this end We've been much too busy To be kind to a friend, And what is there left To make the heart sing When life is a cold And mechanical thing And we are but puppets Of controlled automation Instead of joint heirs To God's gift of creation.
