Susan Lorraine McCaughtry When you get what you want in the struggle for self And the world makes you Queen for a day, Then go to the mirror and look at yourself And see what the girl has to say. For it isn't your mother, your father or husband Whose judgement on you must pass, The person whose verdict counts most in your life Is the girl staring back from the glass. She's the person to please never mind all the rest, For she is with you clear to the end, And you've passed your most dangerous and difficult test If the girl in the glass is your friend. You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum And think you are a wonderful girl, But the girl in the glass says you are a bum If you can't look her straight in the eye. What I would really like to know, is where they get their go,go,go, Up the hall and back again, Only they know where they've been. The chores are many as we can see, But the energy-plus still puzzles me. There is still time left for pleasant smiles After walking all these miles.
