Summer wasn't officially over until September 20, but you couldn't tell that to the 66 Juniors and Seniors who declared the opening day August 9th and the 38 Freshmen who reported it August 10th. They claimed that when the blaring alarm awakened you at 5:30 or 7:30, it's time to say goodbye summer, regardless of the beach trips, World's Fair vacations, lakes, and sunshine. Some were ready, for working 3-11 hadn't offered much rest. For them, school promised a rest and a chance to get back with friends. Others weren't so sure. They liked the luxury of sleeping till noon and then keeping up with all the soaps. The idea of giving up the sun for tanning sessions and home cooked meals for clinical and classes and 30 minute lunch periods didn't settle too well. But there wasn't much choice. So shorts and T-shirts gave way to those blue uniforms. Juniors, and especially seniors, loved it and the Freshmen? Well, nobody told them Mercy would be easy. Afternoons were filled with meetings, soap operas, but most importantly of all, nap times. There's hardly a dull moment with all the homework involved. But most didn't mind, for they knew it wouldn't last forever. And someday, when we find time to think about it, the memories of our involvement will be a valuable link with our past. For now, that participation offered an excellent op- portunity for making the most of 1982. Where classes left out, clubs took over and allowed members to participate in everything from SGA to social committe to Red Cross. Goals were achieved in every angle of school life, including clubs, organizations, parties, as well as those achieved as individuals. Those same frightened freshmen, who thought of Mercy as small but scary now feel right at home. SENIOR YEAR! It has finally ar- rived. Watching underclass juniors and freshman drag to clinical was a laugh. Soon, however, senior-itis, much less Mercy-itis crept in. It wasn't enough to be outside. We wanted to be out of school. Although I cou1dn't leave soon enough in my senior year, now I almost wish I was once again a senior at Mercy. Were you a victim of the put-off syndrome? If not, you were one of a very few because the I'll do it laters have affected almost every student at sometime. But now this year has come to an end and we're looking forward to looking back . . .
