You who have given us greater values Than the knowledge ofa profession, The tenderness ofa friend, The understanding ofa mother, The happiness of a child, An unexhaustible enthusiasm. To you, the Senior Class of 1969 Wishes to say more than Thank you--but the words fail us. Now, in remembrance o f you, We dedicate our annual to you, Mrs. Rosemary Hatten, And all that you mean to us. M rs. Rosemary H allen THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbearable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong, To love sure and chaste from afar, To try when your arms are too weary, To reach the unreachable star! This is my quest, H To follow that star, No matter how hopeless, no matter how far, To fight for the right without question or pause, To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause! And I know, if l'll only be true To this glorious quest, That my heart will lie peaceful and calm, When I'm laid to my rest, And the world will be better for this, That one man scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage, To fight the unbeatable foe, To reach the unreachable Stars. We dare to dream that which others have deemed hopeless may be saved. V Every day of our lives we seek means of beating our unbeatable foe known as death. Our hearts are heavy with the sorrow we see, yet we keep going forward with our hope flying high. Many stones will be thrown our way, and many times we will feel the pain of others, and we will return this pain with love, compassion, and understanding. Our hours will be long, the rewards very small, and most of our goals are never reached. But, this is the quest we must follow. If we do not forget the goals, if we can always remember that -the need of our fellow man counts more, and if we keep within our hearts the light of hope then perhaps in some small way we will succeed in making a better place for those to come. - . . . and perhaps too, we will not be forgotten. THE NURSE A The world grows better year by year, Because some nurse in her little sphere, Puts on her apron and grins and sings, And keeps on doing the same old thing. Taking the temperatures, giving the pills. To remedy mankind's numberless illsg Feeding the baby, answering the bells, Being polite with a heart that rebels. Longing for home and all the while Wearing the same old professional smile. Blessing the newborn babies' first breath. Closing the eyes that are still in death. Taking the blame for the doctors' mistakes Oh Dear, what a lot patience it takes. Going off duty at three o'clock Tired, discouraged and ready to drop. When we lay down our caps and cross the bar Oh Lord will you give us just one little star. To wear in our crowns with uniforms-new. Rotating through the Recovery Room gives the student experience in the immediate postoperative management of the pa- tient, guiding the patient in his recovery from anes- thesia and enabling him to return to his pre-anesthetic level of consciousness. At this time the nurse main- tains a constant vigilance over the patient, and car- ries 'out the immediate postoperative orders as di- rected by the responsible physician. District Three, of which Mercy is a member is presently composed of Mercy, Presbyterian, Central Piedmont Com- munity College, University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gas- tonia. The organization sponsors activities such as the State Workshop, State Convention, trips to the National Convention and various other events. Students are given the privilege of serving on many district and state committees, every effort is made to present opportunities for leadership and responsibility, and involvement is encouraged. Each district chooses a student to represent it at the State Contest of The Student Nurse of The Year held annually at the State Convention. This year Mercy was well represented fielding officers such as: Frank Harrington fState Cor- responding Secretary and Editor of the Hypoder- micj, Rose Ann Vaughn fDistrict Three Presi- dentj, Marcy Ackert flst Vice Presidentj, Yvette Paletta fRecording Secretaryj, Nancy Bennett CSNA Representativej. Y. .2 l Miss Dianne M usgrove Every year Page's Uniform Center sponsors a Stu- dent Nurse Contest in which various schools in North Carolina are invited to enter. The candidate from Mercy is selected by the student body. The student is chosen on her personality, poise and beauty. In competition she models several different fashions provided by dealers in the Charlotte area. 70 Each year a candidate is selected from each sur- rounding school in District Three to compete in the Student Nurse of the Year Contest. The student nurse chosen must be in the upper third of her junior class, exhibit leadership qualities, and actively participate in her school activities. The student must then enter an essay on the topic chosen along with two recommendations from her instructors, one from a fellow classmate, and a biblio- graphy centered around her life after entering training. This is indeed an honor for the student selected in that she is able to meet other students offering different views, compete in a constructive way, and most of all better understand what is expected of her as a nurse.
