What is progress? It is change, and like many other institutions, Mercy has Lmdergone many changes. The curriculum has changed tremendously, even in the past three years. Even though all of us are studying nursing, each year more and more subject material is introduced. Our faculty has increased to the largest ever known at Mercy. In order to be progressive, they have been doing postgraduate study so that they may teach the Mercy students the latest in nursing. Now we have clinical instructors in all areas of the hospital. They are there to guide us in becoming the best- a Mercy nurse. Even our uniforms have changed. Gone forever are the white single- piece uniforms. Mercy students now wear stripes and aprons. There is something new about our caps, also. Freshmen receive a cap upon entering training. Junior students wear a burgundy band and Seniors, royal blue. The capping ceremony is a thing of the past and in its stead, is the banding ceremony. We shall attempt to depict these changes in the MERCILITE through our theme, Progress Through Change. 3 A Dedication To: A dedicated woman-one who strives to help our lives take on mean- ing and fulfillment as if she were molding her own soul- A friend-one who through her kindness, understanding, and friend- ship, has given a part of herself to each of us- An educator-one who has worked our hearts out so subtly that now they are hers forever- A scholar-awoman who has dedicated her life to seeking the truth- In accordance with our theme Progress Through Change , we, the annual staff of the 1965 MERCILITE, do dedicate this annual to our director, Sister Mary Elizabeth, through whose persever- ance and guidance Mercy has truly experienced Progress Through Change. 4 grczfgfczf we ofcafe i 5? p-:WWW ,Q ..o-wwf ' ' - , .. f Qgzsfer ,yyzcdfy Ccjfzagezg QS 9750 if 50 jazlns zbfemyence IIS' 51:9 0 I2 gesfffqzbnof Ae 5050 feeps IQOQ sf noglfzy wzfge succeskyqzfv 5 79r00er5q 19:5 gn fem 01415122 It falls to my hand the privilege of writing of Pat Ciccolella who died of cancer of February 19, 1965. We, in hospital work, face death frequent- ly, but we face it differently when it affects someone close to us. Then too, we must stop and think when there is a special quality involved. Pat was and is very special. She knew her medical condition and faced surgery and therapies with an indom- itable spirit and will. Academically she was an honor roll student, and everyone she worked with recalls her superior nursing ability in the hospi- tal. A few remember the extraordi- nary influen ce she had on certain K M. . patients who had cancer, and who obtained their lift and positive attitude from Pat's encouragement. In her twenty years she lived a lifetime. Selflessness and loyalty walked with her together with pain and hope always encompassed by the circle of the Spirit of God. Truly of her are the Words from Brovsming's PROSPICE applied . . . For sudden the worst turns the best to the brave, The black minutes are end, And the elements rage, the fiend-voices that rave, Shall dwindle, shall blend, Shall change, shall become first a peace out of pain, Then a light, then thy breast, O thou soul of my soul! I shall clasp thee again, And with God be the rest! Excerpts reprinted with the permission of Sister Mary Elizabeth, R.S.M. 7a5Q gf Confenfs 71212 czczf QSIKM .... yjA1Es 0 ,of y ..... QGCUKY ....... We believe that Education is the organized development and equipment of all powers of a person, moral, intellectual, physical and social, by and for their individual social uses, directed towards the union of these activi- ties with their Creator as their final end. We believe that nursing education must be motivated by charity and must include not only the care and rehabilitation of the sick but also the preservation and promotion of health, thereby meeting the comprehensive needs of patients. The desired results of this educational program is the mature Christia.n nurse, capable of self-direction and prepared for beginning professional nurse positions in hospitals and similar institutions. In the hospital we students apply, under the skillful eye of our in- structors, the procedures and principles we learned in the classroom. How we trembled with the thoughts of giving our first IM! Right, Fresh- men? We learn to assume responsibility over there . It must be admitted, our patients expect the best. We have undergone many changes in the clinical area. Most impor- tant is, now we have instructors to show us how to do everything properly. Our instructors, besides guiding, shaping, molding, prodding, and pulling us into a Mercy nurse, also make all our assignments, and make out monthly time Churrah! now holidays on or near the calendar datej Something new - ward classes to help us apply the textbook picture of a condition to a patient, where we can see the total patient - social, economical, medical, etc. - all aspects of a patient and his illness. We are no longer in the hospital for service - only for education. We're not saying we don't give service, for we dog but learning comes first. Right, Juniors? It's with pride that we put on our uniforms and caps. After all, nursing is the noblest profession. Right, Seniors? 72 'N fy' D-A, 73 770 0900!
