Anonymous During the three years spent as a student nurse, we have become Angels of Mercy to many grateful souls. As we go about our daily work, we seldom perform feats that seem extraordinary or praise-worthy to us. We strive to be good nurses, always seeking to meet our patients' needs, always ready to lend a helping hand, and always cognizant of the little things which elevate our deeds to labors of love. We proudly present to you, our 1964 Mercilite, which portrays amem- orable year that shall be fixed in our hearts, deeply rooted among Little Things That Mean A Lot . 2 gofn zhzlsfrafzbn Qgenzbzis OQEFCQSSIDQI? 57.1612 gf Gonfenfs Cfzluzfzbs ff C3A221Caf 11,0 9141612 Ce Q, Q CSQIQICFS A teacher affects eternityg he can never tell where his influence stops . Quote, Henry Adams. How true this statement rings to the students at Mercy. Yes, we are privileged to know, love, and work with Miss Elizabeth Winstead, Because she is Cheerful, when it is difficult to be Cheerful, Patient when it is difficult to be Patient, because she Pushed us on when we wanted to Stand Still, Listened, when we wanted to Talk, and was simply There when we needed a Friend. Can we everforget that twinkling smile on Blue Monday? How welcome were her words of encouragement, I'm not worried girls, you will make it . We believed you, Miss Winstead, and in you. Now we are Seniors, proud to have earned the title of a Mercy Nurse. We have gained confidence since that fateful day in Nursing Arts class when we gave our first IM. Yes, you have guided us through our develop- ment from eager, not so capable Probies, to dedicated and proficient nurses. We, the Senior Class of 1964, wish to thank you for all the little things - the Little Things That Mean A Lot to all your girls . In ap- preciation for all you have given us, and others, we humbly dedicate the 1964 Mercilite to you, Miss Elizabeth Winstead. 4 gfafcfzg Ze ofcafe WSJ Cifzageff ZU1k2sfea0f Way Me gfyourfgifg so sgzhe zfaf 17 cvzfzmzmzhafe Me fearf gfanofezi 77 WUT! 9:23 Q yjarenfs To our dear parents, we extend our Thanks for all the little things - those encouraging words, letters, and smiles. Give to my efforts success, sweet Jesus, for the glory of Thy Holy Name. It is Thy workg Without Thee I can- not succeed. Grant that the sick Thou has placed in my care may be abundantly blessed, and not one of them be lost because of anything that is lacking in me. Help Thou me to overcome every temporal weakness and strengthen in me what- ever may enable me to bring the sun- shine of joy to the lives gathered round me day by day. Make me beautiful Within for the sake of Thy sick ones and those lives which will be in- fluenced by them. Amen. Aaf 1:3 cz CSfUOQI2f urself Between the innocence of an entrance exam and an R.N. comes a lovable creature called a Student Nurse. They come in assorted sizes, heights and shapes, but they have the same creed, to enjoy every second of every hour of every day off duty. Student Nurses are found everywhere: underneath, jumping from, swimming to, and running through. Patients love them, the R.N.'s boss them, orderlies ignore them, doctors tol- erate them, and Heaven protects them. A Student Nurse is truth with blood on her uniform, beauty with gloves on her hands, wisdom with penicillin in her hair, and the future with a newborn baby in her hands. ,, To doctors, a Student Nurse is an inconsiderate, questioning, and intruding bundle of noise. When you want her to make a good impression, she becomes a giggling creature, bent on wasting as much time as possible and sleeping through class. A Student Nurse has an appetite of a horse, the digestion of a disposal unit, the energy of a soapsuds enema, the lungs of a switchboard operator, the imagi- nation of a Vanderbilt Graduate, the enthusiasm of ,Central Supply, the sharpness of a scapel, the audacity of a Nurses' Aide, and when she gives pills she has five thumbs on each hand. She likes food, vacation, and Christmas. You can put her on study hours, but you cannot make her study. She is your aide, your maid, your porter, your friend: She is a freckled faced, pint sized, fun loving bundle of noise. But when she gets off duty with her tiredfeet, and her aching back, she has a funny way of drop- ping off into bed and saying Good Night , but not without thosefamous last words, Check on me in the A.M. ! OF NURSING LIBRARY C635 .7jZ'O!06xQCy This is the last in a series of articles by the FRIDAY EVENING POST on today's young people on the way up. This group has one thing in common, they were all graduated on August 1, 1964 from Mercy School of Nursing. , Linda Shaleuhy, after getting her degree at the University of S. C. is teaching a course in speech at a Boston School in addition to her nursing classes. Margaret Broxton suddenly woke up and was surprised to find that she had finished three years at Mercy and was head nurse in the Emergency Room of a large city hospital. Sheila Stafford, after being head nurse in the nursery at Wake County Hospital has retired to take care of her own. Adrienne Montesanti, was voted the American Miss Italy . It seems the Italians like 'em big. J erolyn Mungo has her own baseball team, the Pageland Pirates. Ernest is, of course, the coach and has half interest in the team. Alpha Keene got so used to acting as mother to a class of nursing students she has decided to go in training again. Her husband was not available for comment. ' Jane Nelson, between her trips to Europe works as housemother for med students at Cornell University. Susan Benedict has opened a hospital for people with braces who cannot adjust to them, with the money she received from her invention, a polish that makes braces shine like silver. Roberta Thompson, with her military background can be heard calling cadence as her dozen boys march to school. Sandy Mehaffey has had trouble in Florida. The NAACP keeps trying to make her a member. Betty Jo Barger could not stand it any longer so she had her ankles removed and prosthesis fitted. Pam Powell is having an exhibit of the paintings she did from snapshots sent to her from California. Jean Hotchkiss is kept busy these days holding down jobs in both Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Philadel- phia, Penn. Llewellynne Caudell now teaches the course Attitude . Fran Farmer can be seen anywhere with her ten-room trailer and little ones as she follows Jimmy. Kathy Connery became Registered Nurse of the Year . She receiveda life time supply of Clinic Roller Skates. Karen Nelson went to talk with J. Edgar Hoover about better prot ection for student nurse dormitories. Linda Cleaver and Martha Spell became Pharmacists. They found their experiences in training helpful. Becky Moses has organized her own rodeo nursing program. Peggy Hutchcraft is Mother Superior of the Sisters of Nursing she organized last year. Laura Phillips is company nurse for B gl H Photo Company. Susie Wilson told us she was expecting sextuplets. She had them and we' doubt her no more. Elaine Kiser is doing research in genetics to try and discover why none of her six children in- herited her red hair. We believe that Education is the organized development and equipment of all powers of a person, moral, intellectual, physical and social, by and for their individual social uses, directed towards the union of these activities with their Creator as their final end. We believe that nursing education must be motivated by charity and must in- clude not only the care and rehabilitation of the sick but also the preservation and promotion of health, thereby meeting the comprehensive needs of patients. The desired results of this educational program is the mature Christian nurse, capable of self-direction and prepared for beginning professional nurse positions in hospitals and similar institutions. Yes, proud of what you, the students, have done to make the Mercilite possible. 93 CDQGZ' yemw c3fz10Q12fs, For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also . How true these words ring as another class, the Class of 1964, prepares to leave Mercy! As we begin our separate journeys through life, a part of every heart will linger here - for here, indeed, our treasure lies. Our lives have been enrichedby the influence of our cap- able and dedicated Director and faculty members. The golden friendships that have become firmly rooted in loyalty and love will always be cherished. The littlethings that mean a lot will be foremost in our memories of the days we spent as a student nurse at Mercy. Hence, in this, the 1964 Mercilite, we have endeavored to present some of the little things - the 1ittle things that will fill our hearts throughout the coming years. We wish to thank our hard-working Staff, and all those who helped make this annual develop from a hopeful dream to a splendid reality. May God continue to bless you and keep you safe within His care.
