This is especially true in this noble profession which we have chosen to follow as our lifc's work. As we turn the pages of this edition of our annual and glance over the living proofs of our associations with each other, it is with grateful affection and fond remembrances that we thank those who have given their best and strived to provide the BEST OF EVERYTHING for us as a whole. We also realize in reliving the moments on these pages, how we will miss the closeness we have established among ourselves, the delight we felt in sharing the good and bad times as a whole, really unit-ed. It is our fond hope, that it will be felt, that we, as a class and as individuals, succeeded fully in giving OUR BEST TO YOU. c n ' 4 in ,, , a - . cy, I 'fi ,wk -id fi My , I'-X tj 4 m ,, ........am,f., .......,..-..- ,Z Xwvxvx ., , ' ' we Rememher mx. u ' , x r. These years are filled with your kindness, understanding, and always present praise which kept me from failing in my dream to become a nurse-a dream which is now fulfilled. Our shared joys, sadness, make me appreciate that you are my Mother and my Dad. My gratitude abides and flourishes in my heart for your faith so strong and enduring. You, my parents, are my ideal and my inspiration, and I pray God to make me more like you. 6 . ...., v A-nf 2.-L 1, ,, ' 2' I . E,' 1' ,' ,-' F 'T' , 1 ,'Q','!-Jill :nf ' lf, V ' ', '. 1. To be aware of the fact that there is always someone who Will listen to your side of the storyg who will give wise adviceg who will pro- vide a shoulder to cry ong and will give of herself untiringly, no matter what the situation, with great understanding and love-this is an essen- tial need. And, this is what you have provided for and offered to us. This is why We will miss you first and foremost above all others. We will re- member the encouragement that came when all seemed to have failed. We will remember the moments of gaity and laughter that predominated over the bad times. All o'er the land we'll scatter. But memories we'll each take away. All those wonderful memories That made three years like a day. Deeply stored in our hearts are the rich memories which we have shared in the climb for our goal. These memories not only fill pages in a book, but cling as a constant echo in our hearts. A sunny Tuesday morning, September 3, 1957, marked the beginning as forty-nine wide-eyed, shiny-faced country bumpkins descended upon Mercy, ladened with their choicest possessions-everything. Who was more frightened, Our new mother, Sister Mary Gertrude, the director, or us? Yes, this was to be home for three years. Such eager- ness and enthusiasm was uncomparable. Confused and frightened, the first week began in a whirl of picnics, Weiner roasts, orientations, tours, and last but not least, initiation, leaving us with the lasting im- pression that we were Probies green and new. Dressed as tramps, we began our day of exercises, scrubbing, cleaning, kneeling, bow- ing, singing, but most impressive, the aroma of Hoyte's perfume filled the air. All ended that night at rat court where each in turn paid her debt to the Seniors. Our minds now turned to more serious matters, and we settled down to classes, classes, classes-not to mention the many hours we burned the midnight oil. The dread- ed, yet longed for day arrived. The poor de- fenseless patients were put at the mercy of trembling probies in white aprons and black skirts. In February, Sister M. Jerome became our director and our new mother. First impres- sions were stern, but underneath was found warmth and understanding. May 10th marked another plateau as 39 happy student nurses received the mark of distinction and symbol of achievement-our caps. . Time passed, and with experience gained we began our specialties and psychiatric af- filiation. Our Junior year had come and gone, and in September we once again found our- selves standing before Sister M. Jerome as she placed our blue bands on our caps. At last, we were Seniors. We now face the future with great am- bivilance. As graduation nears, memories both happy and sad come to mind. The sad- dest being the departure of classmates along the way. Each with their memories and a part of all we have shared. The happiest moments are too numerous to recall, but have made their impression, Peanuts, The Mickey Mouse Club, our nightly sessions, Red-Fez Picnics, and our friend, Mr. Rich- ardson. We will all part and go our separate ways, but looking back, we will miss all the old familiar faces and things we have grown to know and love, especially those who have given their all. With sad hearts we depart, taking with us all the principles of life we have learned, going forth with one great impression, To work hard, pray harder, and love with all our might. Yes, here at Mercy we have found, and are prepared to give The Best of Every- thing. Rosalie Smith Snuffy Departments ,Q f , A, M W f ' X1 XI K. Sister Mary Jerome Mercy Hospital Nome, Alaska Dear Sister Jerome, Congratulations on your tremendous new hospital in Nome. I'm sorry, however, that your duties there prevented your attending the reunion of the Class of '60. Thought you might appreciate having all the gossip passed on to you. Speaking of new hospitals, Nancy Warren and Jean Gryder have built a 3,000 bed hospital in Belmont. Yvonne Joseph is also in Belmont. She's working in the infirmary at the Abbey. You will be glad to learn that some of our class are still at Mercy. Margaret Batson is doing well as Director of Nursing Service. Ann Smoot, due to her nursing ability, has become clinical instructor on Second floor. Peggy Godfrey was sitting in the auditorium when we arrived. Seems she hadn't moved since graduation. We almost didn't recognize JoAnne Brooks, as she was covered with crepe paper. Peggy Yates and JoAnn Wynne informed us they were competing for Miss America of 1970. Here is the latest from some who couldn't make it. Lieutenant Jeanine VanKerckhove is stationed in Ghent, Belgium. Shirley Bess has left nurs- ing and is working for Southern Bell. Barbara Foster couldn't come, but her name will go down in history as first nurse into orbit. Joyce Welch wouldn't come out of her lab. She's working on a serum to make short men grow tall. Francis Chunn was in Paris, looking at a new collection of wed- ding dresses. As three of her children have chickenpox, Betty Cartledge stayed away. Pat Rea was busy as President of Virginia State Nurses' Association. Cathy Swoope is director of nurses at the Naval Hospital in Norfolk, and Peggy Markwalter has started a training school for male nurses. Jody Adkins is teaching Speech Therapy at Cone hospital. Geraldine Belcher is with WBTV, patching up injured cowboys. We heard Hettie Melvin recruiting nurses on WCKY. Also heard that Daphne Stowe had a side- line-selling foreign sports cars. Snuffy Smith paid off all her bills, but went into debt coming to the reunion. The New York Yankees have a team nurse-Jean McAvoy. Some of the girls have achieved real fame. Fonda Cumbie and Jean Fulk by in- venting a tranquilizer for overworked nurses, Ruth Ann Goforth was awarded a golden key to the maternity ward, Kate Holder went into partnership with Miss Ahrens in her ceramics shop, and Faye Taylor, Carol Martin, and Pat Williams collaborated on an article for the A.J.N. entitled How to Stop the Cigarette Habit. I must close now. My plane leaves for Memphis in an hour. On behalf of the class, may I extend OUR BEST TO YOU Q41-Qi 07144-fofxfe. 93 i... 5-F .
