May this book serve as a token of our graHtude to allwvho have contdbuted to the reaHzaHon of our dreams. Sister Mary Elizabeth Student Hound! 62 ' 'Mamruls C0 Kemcmber ' ' Now as a wonderful dream is about to become a reality, thoughts wind themselves among events that have become immortalized in our hearts. These we shall attempt to preserve here so that they may commemorate forever what we have shared together. September eighth, nineteen hundred, fifty-six, marked the starting point in our Our chosen career of nursing. We arrived and were greeted by Sister Mary Gertrude, Sisteif' Mary Carmel and upper classmen. We were shown to the rooms which were to become our new? homes. Sister Gertrude with her graciousness reminded us that she would assume the role of our mother away from home -- a part which she played to the fullest capacity. We were entertained on the lawn by a wiener roast with Sister Gertrude doing the honors. Our first glance at the hospital with its strange, unmistakable medicinal odors, and its busy corridors gave us a new and heretofore unexperienced thrill. Our first week at Mercy was filled with activity, hospital tours, movies, and a picnic at the Red Fez Club. The climax came on Saturday, September sixteenth when at eleven-thirty, A.M., forty-nine unrecognizable preclinicals emerged in pigtails, dresses and maid's aprons, bobby- sox and high heels and carried broom, bucket, and toothbrush in hand. While the blazing sun was at its height we began a stately march around the block and ended our stroll in St. Patrick's Garden to perform any antics of the seniors' choosing. We cleaned their rooms until well in the afternoon and scrubbed the walk with our tooth brushes. Amid all our activities, we bowed our heads to theground as the seniors passed and serenaded them with How Green I Am and truer words were never spoken. All violations were sorely regretted at nine-thirty P.M. when we were made to pay for all mistakes at rat court. When carefree fun of initiation and parties subsided we began classes that were to con- tinue for seemingly endless days and weeks of persistent study. Classes necessitated the fre- quent burning of the midnight oil. ln November we began hospital practice. The profound satisfaction we derived from those experiences and the inexcusable messes we made shall not be soon forgotten. At last the first plateau of our goal had been reached. May fourth began with a Mass and our capping breakfast. At six o'clock, P.M., thirty-five happy student nurses marched in carrying in our hands the symbol of our achievement, our cap. After a short vacation we returned to resume our duties. Everything seemed different now that we were wearing our cops. ln August we began night duty and the weeks and months that lay ahead were filled with new adventures, many happy, many sad. Along the wayside many of our classmates depalgted for various reasons and with each one went a portion of each of us gor the things we had Shared together. During our Junior year Sister Mary Jerome came as our irector. . February marked ourfirst separation when affiliation to Dix Hill began for our class. Summer passed and thenthe tall and September saw another plateau reached, we .re- ceived our blue bands, signifying that we were seniors. Our Senior Year has been a happy one but as it convenes we look with ambivalence toward graduation when we will feel sorrow for the familiar faces we will miss, the happy times we have shared, and happiness forthe successful obtaining of our goal. We go forth with a cul- mination of knowledge with which we shall sustain and nourish the soul as well as the body of man and in the darkness may we be the light. 63 V- - --an ul 4 2 51 if C, I N Elizabeth Bornhill Business Monoger Mcrcilife Omo Jeon Townsend, Editor s x Mrs. Julio C.
