Newly graduated from high school, we the class of '57 were ambitiously seeking further adventure. Fortunately, lshall we say?i, the nursing profession allured some sixty- four of us, and we found ourselves here at Mercy. We were welcomed by the Sisters and upperclass- men lafter initiation, when the seniors took every advantage of their opportunitiesi, as the brand new probie class. We soon realized that classes were our main obligation for the first nine months. Our large number made it necessary to divide the class into two groups. While half of us went to Sacred Heart lhow could we ever forget the cold morn- ings and the jaunty bus ride to and fro?i, the other half remained here with Miss Chase to learn nursing arts. The days and nights lfor often we were found burning the midnight oili were filled with studies. Anatomy could never have been learned without an example-and who was a more perfect specimen than our roommate? Donning crisp white uniforms and working in the hospital wards for a few hours each day made us feel that we were progressing. Each day brought new experiences. We lived up to our title probie , as we innocently asked all kinds of stupid questions. May l955 . . . Capping, an occasion greatly anticipated, for this was our first symbol of rec- ognition in our profession. Followed by a two-weeks vacation lwhich was used to best advantagei, we returned to find that text books had been replaced by charts, medications, night duty, and just any- thing fate would allow happen to a Freshman student. September l955 . . . Another promotion, this time to Junior with all its trials and tribulations. Again, we encountered new experiences each day as we worked long hours of general duty along with being initiated into the special departments. Hemosta'tsj, sutures and sterile technique was not foreign terminology after observing and scrub- bing for surgery. The obstetrical department was no disappointment, as we realized the sacredness of birth. Motherly instincts were more vivid in us after caring for the new mothers and their babies. Our Junior year was probably the hardest. We had been in training too long to remember the beginning, and graduation was too far away to comprehend. Being campused held its significance. lWe shall not go into detaill. A month of vacation during the summer was a real morale booster. Returning to school meant we would soon be seniors and there was much in store for us. September 1956 . . . Seniors at last, with all its rights and privileges, as we flashed blue bands and class rings. The general hospital routine con- tinued. For most of us special training in Pediatrics and Psychiatry consumed most of our senior year period. Maybe a little bit apprehensive about spending three months in Psychiatric nursing,.we went to Dix Hill in Raleigh la place which holds its significance in other phases, tool, only to find it most interesting. Memories of the HilI shall never be forgotten. Three months experience in Pediatrics gave us a clearer understanding of children and of ourselves. Wearing a ribbon around the wrist was not uncommon for a pediatric nurse. lP.S. This was not for the entertainment of the children.i Although nursing was our primary objective, we have accumulated some fond memories, from the social point of view. Some of these highlights were the dances, the Christmas Concerts, picnics at the Red Fez Club, talent shows and minstrels, the Mistletoe balls, trips to the Nurses' Convention, the Junior-Senior dances, as sponsors and as guests. We would never be able to express the good times we had just being together. lPajamas and cokes at 2:00 A.M., sunbathing on Mercy beach , or dunking somebody into a tub of cold water, just for the heck of it.i August l957 . . . Graduation, our goal reached so far as Mercy School of Nursing was concerned. Forty we were in number lseveral had found other attractions during the three-year periodi, who exchanged blue bands for black ones. Happily, we received those precious diplomas, an occasion never to be forgotten. Reminiscing, as one will inevitably do at such a heartfelt occasion, we were a bit saddened at the thoughts of leaving Mercy lfor it had been our homel, and the Sisters lwho had so faithfully and patiently taught and encouraged us through the thick and the thini, and the separation of our class, for we had grown to feel like one large family. Embarking upon life, it is not our intention to be only professional graduate nurses, but to uphold and maintain the title already bestowed upon us as Angels of Mercy . Sue Loggins, Class Historian If 6 CLASS PROPHECY lt seems that the headstrong class of '57 would like a look into the future to see what it holds for them. It is typical that they are not willing to abide by Che Sera, Sera, but must look for themselves. Slowly, as the crystal ball is polished, vague images take shape. Holding office seems to have gone to Peggy Warren's head, for she is now president of the American Nurses' Association, ably assisted by Sue Ray. Sue Gurley and Fay Goodman have finally managed to marry old millionaires. Jean Morgan and Therese Galligan may be seen nightly on their musical TV program. They often have as their guests the famous commediene Betty Scruggs and a dancing team composed of Carolyn Taylor and Peggy Toomey. Dianne Duckett Everhart and Barbara Cornelius Everhart have a small town of their own inhabited by Everharts. Betty Bowles, Reva Brown, and Irene McFadden really have their heads up in the clouds in their Air Force Blues. Lou Rowe has deserted the nursing field com- pletely to become diction instructor at Yale. Shirley Shepherd, Betty Kiker and Nancy Hartis are solid pillars of society with rather large families. Dan and Nancy Farabee MC a radio program heard coast to cost as Fun With the Farabees. Liz Choate heads the physical education depart- ment at Carolina. Shirley Arvey's dreams are being fulfilled as a medical missionary, but she still has boyfriend trouble. Gif Always having a yearning to travel, Joanne Woodie and Betty Walton are now touring Paris. Sue Loggins has decided to join her husband in the teaching profession, but of course she teaches probies to make beds. Carole Rickert and June Edney have set up a travel agency, specializing in guided mountain tours around Hendersonville. Just beside George's stands a little bakery run by Mary Carpenter and Stella Davis, where they bake only pecan pies. Faye Cain and Betty Russell's cute faces and figures landed them among New York's top models. With her vast store of experience Mary Oakley has been appointed Virginia's official advisor to the lovelorn. Since she naturally loves to talk, Sandra Caliendo couldn't resist becoming involved in politics. Katie Audrey manages to combine her nursing career with designing, to turn out some of the smartest new uniforms. J Serving as Business manager for the MERCI- LITE seems to have given Becky Heath the idea of establishing her own very successful advertising agency. Rotha and Phyllis Dawkins have established the Dawkins' nursing home for eligible young bachelors only. Joan Beck and Shirley Windell have managed to combine their many attributes to become wives, mothers and industrial nurses. For the entire class of '57 I prophesy much happiness. Doris Coulter Prophet f'N 61 CAM lt all began on September six, The year nineteen fifty-four. We left our homes and loved ones To continue our education once more. With eager eyes we gazed all around Not knowing what to expect. We saw new faces and heard new names, And we wondered what would be next! But the days flew by and on September eleven The seniors began their fun. We were initiated by these girls Beginning with the rising sun. But all of a sudden things grew dim, And we missed our parents and friends. We packed our bags and were ready to leave, But our roommates unpacked them again. By and by the scene grew brighter. We heard Uniforms are here? On November second we went on the hall, All homesickness replaced with cheer. Remember the night that we received What we'd long been waiting for. We got our caps that we wear with pride, We'd completed the first of our chore. lt hasn't been very easy it's true, And many have dropped by the way, But we've enjoyed every minute In spite of the things we say. i- OQITL . The road's been long with many a ditch, But we've made it this far, my friend. We're over the hump and the sun's coming through At last! There's sunshine again. We must climb higher and higher, Lighting the smallest dark corner with love: Our lamps will lead us onward Guided by the One above. We're not just nurses now As some believe us to be. We're loyal Mercy Nurses, And that adds a lot, you see. We're angels of Mercy in a heaven on earth And there's so very much to do. The sick, the needy, the lonely Are calling to me and you. Capping meant a lot to us, Graduation means much more. But the future is even greater, So let's open wide it's doors. Let's wear our caps with dignity And learn all that we can, So now that we have graduated We'll be worthy of the black band.
