S. A. A month ago I received a letter from Edna Edwards, president of Mercy Hospital Alumnae Association, asking me to display my talents as a majorette at the annual meeting of the Association. I accepted with pleasure, hoping to see many of my old classmates. My trip to annd from Charlotte was made unusually pleasant by Lulu Miller who was the hostess on my plane. Upon landing at Douglas Airport a fire red ambulance drove up with the siren blasting and none other than Ann Allen jumped out to meet Lulu and me. lAnn is the owner of a brand new fleet of am- buIances.l On the way to Mercy, Ann tuned in on the radio and we heard Martha Smith's latest hit- Bedpon Bop. Suddenly, a Henry J streaked by and I recog- nized Joan Cashwell at the wheel. She flew by, ob- livious of the sign- Dangerl Cliff Ahead! lShe was last seen on cloud iil3l. As we drove past the Square, there stood my old room mate, Doris Edwards playing a uke with the Salvation Army Band. The band was playing, Rusty Old Halo, Skinny White CIoud. We arrived at Mercy in high spirits and were taken on a tour of the old Nurse's Home. Still lying in her bed in room 450 was Johanne McKee, writing letters in Braille. She glanced up to ask, Did I get any mail? Over in the hospital there were quite a few changes. Anne Earley is working in pediatrics. I hear that she is head nurse on the play porch. Sister Mary Joseph is supervisor of the Central Supply Room. Sister Elizabeth has started a new nursing trend on First St. Mary's. The students are wearing roller skates on duty . Betty Severt and Noah are doing fine work in our O. B. department. The meeting of the Association was a huge success. Theresa Morgan sang, Come Out of the Barnyard Grandmother, You're Too Old to Horse Around accompanied by Clara Kelly on the har- monica. After the meeting all of the class of fifty-six gathered in the Coke Room to exchange gossip. Jean Tribble related that Theresa told her that Shirley Casey and Avie Butler had gone to Holly- Gold Coast of Africa Friday l3, l96l wood to co-star with Doctor Bost and Doctor Gal- Iant in Doctors Prefer Redheads. Ann Allred could hardly wait to tell us about her new job. She has been hired by the Red Cross to tour the South, speaking on the subject What To Do Until the Orderly Gets There. Jo Ann Mclver loves her work with Rex Morgan M.D. Charlotte Pressley is racing about town, busy at the job of being Doctor Harloe's new nurse. Mary Stewart has a grand job with one of the town's leading veterinarians. Peggy Dale can be found in the infirmary at the Lambda Chi House over at State's College in Raleigh. g Joan Breeden has a part time job in a bakery. lThe last time anyone saw her she was really roll- ing in dough.I Mary Lois Barbare has a new chain of con- cession stands. Shirley Moore has given up nursing for a higher calling. She has become a healer and has patent- ed her own tonic Ader Cox's Little Home Remedy. Jody Walker said she was still saving Tube Rosee coupons for a boy scout knife. Betty Sue Williams looked very chic. She is modelling for Kress. Jean Tribble has finally settled down with the man of her dreams-the worId's champion wrestler. Ann Sawyer and her navy commander husband are touring the Catawba in a small row boat. Mary Ida Godwin said that she and Pat were well on the way to writing their own version of Cheaper by the Dozen. The nenwspapers were filled with the exciting new discovery recently made by one of Mercy's graduates none other than Mary Williams . . . A short, painless way of administering shots without the use of a needle. Dot Poole looked wonderful, but then why wouIdn't she? She teaches the present students of Mercy Hospital the latest techniques in golf on the beautiful new green located in the back of nurses quarters. Dot always believed in' good use of leisure time. Well, Diary, that is all for now. Before I go to bed I simply must read Rose ChandIer's latest book, Nursing in Seven Easy Lessons. As one walks her halls today, this modern institution silently re- lates her own history, from its humble beginnings in a parish auditorium, of a twenty-five bed hospital, then known as Mercy General Hospital, to the present day-fifty years later, it stands as a monument of progress with a capacity of two hundred eighty beds, expanding as the city of Charlotte grew. lt was February 26, l906, that Father Joseph and the first band of Sisters of Mercy guided the early beginnings of Mercy Hospital. The training period in these fifty years has likewise under- gone many changes. The first training school was started with Miss Beulah Squires as superintendent. The initial class had only four members: Sister Mary Dolores, Sister Mary Bride lwho is still showing a vital interest in the hospital's functionsl, Miss Josephine Finch, and Miss Rose Farley. The present class of fifty years later numbers thirty-seven. The nursing school today boasts of six hundred eighty-two graduates. lt would indeed seem strange to the student nurses of today to experience a typical day in the life of the student nurse in those pioneer days. A twelve to eighteen hour duty, followed by classes and many odd laborious tasks took any monotony from daily routine. Nursing in those days was cer- tainly not a glamorous life. From a two year program with no diploma, the school has developed a three year program with the possibility of attainment of the R.N. degree and an associate science degree in Nursing to enable the student to specialize and advance her knowledge in the nursing profession. The student of today works an eight hour day with class time included, and lives in comfortable, pleasant surroundings. The nurses' hom'e was created to meet the growing needs of the incoming aspirants to the nursing profession. Private and semi-private rooms, lounges and reception rooms, and the modernly equipped auditorium greatly aided in the provision of a social outlet for the Mercy student nurse. In l926 the present hospital was opened, then considered quit edistant from the city. Its capacity had increased to a seventy-five bed hospital with an addition of two new de- partments, the Xray and Laboratory. Of necessity the surgical and obstretical departments were enlarged. Ten years later another wing with an increase of thirty-five more beds was added, and in this same year the hydro and physiotherapy sections had their beginnings. Two years later the west wing was completed thus bringing the bed capacity to one hundred fifty. Since this time Mercy Hospital has been constantly improving, developing and growing. ln mentioning the history of the hospital there is another name linked with the early beginnings, that of Mother M. Raphael who is still playing an important role in the advance- ment of so noble a cause to suffering humanity. Mother Raphael could truly appreciate what Father Time has done in behalf of Mercy Hospital. May she be spared many more years in the service of God's sick poor. This is the heritage the class of fifty-six accepted when it entered the doors of the training school of September eighth, nineteen hundred fifty-three. A more frightened group of trainees has yet to be seen. The kind seniors that year did much to allay the fears experienced through a comical initi- ation. Many memories crowned the preclinical year. The trips to and from Sacred Heart College with the ringing of merry voices and the jouncing along of the bus . . . who can forget the glee club, directed by Mr. Smith in preparation for the big concert . . . those were the days! Thanksgiving and the turkey raffle thrilled the winner lTetal as well as the pajama party that was part of the fun. The other events occur to every class, l suppose, but to us the arrival of our uniforms meant more than any other class. One thing a lot of them had to be remade. Who will forget the Mistletoe Ball of the preclinical year? New Years and Easter passed in rapid succession and then the day of days, our capping. We were fifty-two on that day. Some of our number were attracted into the marriage state, others were finding other interests, the faithful ones returned to their books and white. The Red Fez club at the river holds fond memories for our class for the numerous picnics enjoyed. Freedom Park was a favored spot for outings, not only for our class but the other classes were brought closer to us by these get-togethers. The history of our class would be incomplete if the report of the Top Hatters' Review was omitted. We knew we had a talented group but after this particular performance, everyone else was aware of it. For weeks after Jimmy Kilgo remembered the Mercy Nurses in his song dedications. The ceremonies of the addition of the blue stripes on our caps made us not only feel more important but officially we were the seniors. Responsibilities galore faced us. Psychiatry was one of the dreams or shall l say nightmares because this meant the first time our numbers were to be divided. Only three months were spent at either Seton in Baltimore or Dick's Hill in Raleigh. The Sodality's selection of the .Mistletoe Queen of our Senior year made it more exciting. Our school's Christmas party reminded us that this was our last year as students. Our classes, Hall work and social functions all seem to remind us it is the last time for each of these pleasant mem- ories, made precious by the fact that they are our to cherish.
