This is she speaking. Hello, Miss Whisnant-how are you? It has been almost six years since I've seen you. I'm calling to see if you could give me any information on the 1953 class. You see we are planning a class reunion. I had a letter from Helen Howard the other day inviting me to come see her new dancing school in New York. Remember the good ole days and those lessons she gave 4th floor. Capt. Betty Brown dropped in to see me yesterday. She is on her way to marry a retired Colonel. By the way, Juanita, how is your B.S. in Nursing Education coming along? Just fine, I only have a couple of months to go before I will be back to fill the position you're holding for me. Oh! Have you heard about Miriam Hall? She is now married to Willie. In fact, there are quite a few girls in our class married. Joan Aspelmier is now Mrs. Tommy Tremble. Chris Gregory is marrying Sam soon. She was in Alaska doing Public Health for two years. Chris told me Jean Peters was now Mrs. Willie Blanton, happily married with four children. Janice Edwards dropped by to see me. Man, her figure is simply a dream. She is in Surgery in Pine- hurst. Evelyn Parnell, the new night supervisor at Mercy has finally hit High C in Opera. Well, Norma Winecoff is still debating on the luggage or Harry. Wonder which will win? Helen Tucker is still doing private duty. Betty Scruggs and Margaret Cureton have taken over 2nd floor. Cureton is Head Nurse on 2nd Main. Frances Tola is working at Rex in Raleigh. They think she is tops. She is the only hospital supervisor that gives the students two days a week and all holidays off. Marcy Hager joined the Navy so she could be with Bill. She still gets a little sea sick even after four years. Speaking of the Navy, Barbara House sure does look nice in a captains uniform. Snooney Carnes has finally received her naval bars and also a navy man. Luck, I'll say. Sister, I bet you didn't know that Joann Jones is up here with me getting her B.S. in Surgery. After all Dr. Martin is holding a position for her. Mrs. Bruce Simmons is working side by side with her husband in their biscuit factory. Bo0tsie Klein, Martha Whitlock, Sue Quinlivan, Barbara Mahoney, Janice Webber are all working in Seton. Mahoney, Whitlock, Webber, Klein iust love those Annapolis men. Sue is handing in her resignation to marry 'Red.' Sue Clontz found an interest in Asheville so she has gone back to marry 'Alf Beverly Clontz is still working in Pediatrics at Mercy. Juanita Barger is now Mrs. Jay Williams and believe it or not her hair is shoulder length and as curly as possible. Gunta has completed two years of college work and is now teaching at the New York University. Pauline Satterfield is opening a New Mental Institution in Tennessee. Jean Tucker is opening a new Pediatrics wing at Monroe. Clyde Vickey is Sister Miriam's new assistant in the D.R. Betty Waldrop fthe girl with the sparkling eyesJ has opened alove-lorn clinic at U.S.C. Faye Smith has a desk job at Hamlet Hospital and has now captured another heart and another ring. Jeanette Smith is now married and just keeping house. Johnnie Watson is helping Jimmy lay bricks for their new home. Rita Helms now has a marine of her own since she married Joe Gable. Little Peggy Bobbitt has finally given up civilians and settled for a marine, also named Joe. Jessie Pittillo is now Mrs. Tommy Koontz. They are living in Texas with their children. Little old Louise Lockey is working in the nursery letting tthe babies carry her out at feeding time. And Polly Black is supervisor of the Wadesboro institution. Jeannine Sisk is now nursing at the new H-bomb plant which is near her home in Clearwater. Helen Satterfield has her own television show 'A giggle a minute.' The roving around Margaret White is still doing private duty. Caroline Smith 'the trick girl' is still running arounl trying to get all her .work done in the Winston-Salem hospital where she is supervisor of the Medical and Surgical floors. Betty Brunson is still eating like a horse trying to gain weight and working in Periatrics. Marilyn Coffer's hair is still between a blonde and a brunette. She is working in Dr. Harloe's office. Well, Sister, this is about all the information I can give you at this time. Maybe it will help a little. It surely will, Juanita, and I will expect to sec you at the reunion. Goodbye and thank you so much. Goodbye, Sister. 7? 477577 CLASS HISTORY CLASS HISTORY FEBRUARY 1953 February 7, 1950 our class entered the portals of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing to begin the long journey to professional attainment. Those first five months as probie hold many memories that shall linger no matter how old we become. The many subjects we thought we would never learn but somehow we did pull through. Our first day on the halls we were really scared little probies at the thought of giving our first bath to a real live patient. After much work and study we finally were being capped on July 7, 1950, and handing down our role as probias to the incoming class. It was a great night to us ,when we took our places beside the older nurses with more responsibility. We really felt we belonged. We now started working longer on the halls and studying more because we realized that to give our most to the patient we must understand his illness. The next year and a half seemed to pass swiftly. We went through some of our departments. The work seemed hard at times but we had many laughs along the way. Before we knew it we received an invitation from Sister Evangelist to attend an afternoon party February 7, 1952, to receive our blue bands for our caps which signified our seniority and our class rings which we thought were beautiful. Being a senior meant more responsibility but also more privileges. The next six months seemed to pass swiftly as we worked and studied and at last we were on vacation, but all good things must come to an end. On August 3, 1952, we were together again at Highland Hospital affiliating for Psychiatry. We learned much about mental illness and had a good time, but were glad to get back to Mercy where we all went to Pediatrics together. On February 7, 1953, we were at the closing moments of our three years training. We were extremely proud to receive our pins and diplomas but very sad to say goodby to the Sisters who had helped us all along the way, the doctors who had been so patient as we were learning, to our supervisors who helped us so much on the halls, and to our fellow students who worked with us side by side. JOANN JONESLCl3SS Historian CLASS HISTORY OF SEPTEMBER 1953 We were all so nervous on that exciting day, September 12, 1950, when we bid our parents and friends goodbye and entered good ole Mercy. It was fun getting acquainted and studying together those first six months when we were lonely, home sick and tired of the word probie. As the seniors gazed on us brats as necessary evils, they soon -found entertainment in seeing how many exaggerations we would believe. They soon realized that, as all probies do we lent an air of enthusiasm and eagerness. Someday we may tell our twenty grandchildren of those days! We'll grope for the memories and they will come-slowly. THE GRANDPARENTS TALE Yes, those were the good ole days! The first six months were a little tedious, but we settled down to studies and work on the halls. I remember the second month we were told by Sister Miriam the day had come to go on the hall for A.M. and P.M. cares. My! what a thrilling but frightening experience! After six months of this tedious studying and work, finally came the great day when we received our honored and cherished caps. Little did we realize that our troubles were just beginning. It's a wonder the seniors didn't go mad with our accidents, mistaken identities, and questions. Before we knew it we were in the diet kitchen, on night duty, and medical and surgical floors. Then we were Juniors worring with medications, O.B. and night duty again. And, of course we had the honor of giving and attending the junior-Senior Dance. These annual events are worth waiting years for. Vacation, and we were Seniors, sweating out the anxious moments when the changes were put up- blue bands, pediatrics, and doctors lectures. There was our trip to Raleigh to the North Carolina Student Nurses Convention with Sister Gertrude. We sent two girls to model our old and new uniforms. Faye Smith was elected first vice president and Frances Tola was one of the directors. We all had a fine time on the bus even with roll call at every stop. This history will never be written in text books, but it will be a part of every girl who graduates. We are ready for an erciting jump into the world, and rest assured, we will be proud to say, I AM A GRADUATE, REGISTERED NURSE OF MERCY HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING.
