CIIISS HlSllllll In the historical year of 1947, a small group of girls, 13 in all, entered the welcoming doors of the Mercy Nurses Home. These intellectual 'Eienstiens' had just Hnished 12 long years of schooling, and to their knowledge had learned just about all there was to know, at least they thought so! UD Well, the weeks slipped slowly by-each day bringing a new lesson. Can't you just see Sister Assumpta giving Miss Chase a bath? Now that's a lesson we all learned at one time or another. But with their lessons and work came lots of fun and good times. Remember the initiation party when Nita, Gwen, Betty, and 'Beji' came up and found, of all things, cornflaker in their beds! And the day Sister Fidelis tried saying Miss Fowler and it came out Miss Flora ? She still can't say Fowler. Whee, it was just about time to go on the halls. Were we ever scared? Our knees trembled when we even thought about it. The first day on the halls-OH, Mickey, you didn't drop the alcohol bottle, did you? Well . . . ? But we got used to the halls and the halls got used to us, everything became peaceful and serene. Months seemed like years and after a short eternity june rolled around bringing us a reward for our struggles-UCAPPING DAY. We were very proud that day. Proud to know that we had passed with flying colors. We now had our little white caps and we felt for awhile fat least 2 hoursj like full-fledged nurses. For we were to learn as time went on that nobody is the genius he thinks he is, especially a medical genius. 'ff 'Hx-sa! linger liwhile Carolyn Brookshire Gwen Edwards Gladys Armstrong Sister M. We were glad to see them and we gladly handed the hated title of Probie over to them. It seems though, that we not only ac- quired some cute girls but quite a few demons. Their initiation party was a huge success. Re- member when Billie prayed for rain and when Doris, Re, Edna, and Geer proceeded to their rooms, they not only had cornflakes in their beds, but everything imaginable missing! They didn't bother to look for their books. Can you blame them? Then came Halloween. Everybody agreed that Margaret Ann made a very convincing ghost. We studied and studied and somehow managed to wade through our lessons. They were hard but we wanted to learn and most of all we were also dreaming of the day when we would be wearing a little white cap. Winter came in with a flurry-Hurry of snow that is and on Christmas Day-Well did you ever see two more excited girls than Maria and Bye? Started to be a lonesome Christ- mas for some of us so far from home, but Violet, who was a very good friend of Santa, helped make it a joyous season. . Was a mighty cold winter but it passed quickly and February 28th came in with a bang! Those were truly great days in the life of a nurse and this proved to be one of the more memorable ones. We were to receive our caps and gain the title of Freshmen. We had worked hard, but now we had to work much harder to learn and abbsorb all the knowledge and prac- tice that comes with nursing. And at last we began to realize what a great and wonderful profession we had chosen Then came the Junior-Senior Dance. A few chosen Freshmen were allowed to help serve punch, Beck and Diane we recall for certain. The rest of us, B. August, our big Sisters graduated and left us to take over the roll of big Sisters to the new classes coming in. Another year passed. We continued to study hard for we were really anxious to know and learn, but we had our dances and parties, picnics, etc. And the junior-Senior rolled around again, this time for us, and especially for Shirley. She met her one and only that night. Summer was blistering hot and Marty, Jewel, Doris jean, and Cathy came back from their vacation at the beach with burned and tanned backs and faces to prove it. Violet's class were hrst Seniors and we were at long last second Seniors! Fall was beautiful and Gwen and Gladys enjoyed an unforgettable day in the mountains. December 3, Mercy Hospital put on a Minstrel. It was a huge success and was enjoyed by everyone. Libbie Norris spent the whole time looking for Chloe. December 28, one of the big events took place-THE MISTLETOE BALL. Candidates for Queen this year were Betty Safrit, Rose Hartsell, Peg McNeil, Sylvia Hampton, and Mary Kirkland. Queen Betty reigned for a night. Remember that look on Millie's face. Wrmnder what she was thinking about? Time was drawing closer for the first Seniors to receive their diplomas and graduate. Then out of a clear blue sky, February came again and we must bid farewell to our classmates and friends. It seemed so strange not to see them in student uniforms. We didnt see them very often now, but ,lean Fowler was working in the nursery and liking it very well. We were glad when Mamie Ella and Carolyn were up and about. We were pressed for time on the Annual now, had a deadline to beat, you know. Betty Hill and Bye rushed around snapping everybody's picture, bad or good, and Dotty, for such a little girl got us some mighty big ads. The three girls left for Baltimore March 12, we hated to see Bye, Mac, and Agnes leave, but we wished them well and waited anxiously for their first letters. We worked diligently on the Annual for we wanted this, the Second Annual of Mercy Hospital to be the best. Now we were yin! Seniors and OUR junior-Senior was in April. We were slowly beginning to realize we would soon be leaving. Time seemed to go faster, when now, we really wanted to hold it back for still a little while. We were uncertain and a little afraid for we were soon to be on our own. August 24th. The great day had come and we were at the closing moment of our three years of training. We were proud of our diplomas and pins, but we were sad for we were leaving behind many, many friends, the Sisters, the Doctors, the Supervisors and most of all our fellow students. And it is to these-the Sisters, the Doctors, the Supervisors, but most of all to our fellow students, we leave this Annual. For we know you will keep it well. Treasure it as we do, for we do lzold dear every memory of you and all you have done for us to make our path through life a brighter and more profitable one. When I walked into the nurses home the first person I saw was Catherine Rios who had been to a Ladies Society Meeting before coming to the banquet. She had two rings on her third finger left hand, who was the lucky man? One of our most prominent Charlotte men. While sitting in Sister Evangelist office recalling former days Delores Beck fMrs. Richard McGrawb came by with her little one Gussie and Richard, jr., it seemed as though she was looking for someone and curiously enough was joined by Betty Conner, whose husband had brought her over fBob Edmondsj. Sister Mary Peter brought in the evening paper and just guess whose picture was on the front page-Betty johnson- Nurse of the Nation. Sister Vincent came by and said she had a wire from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis stating that a Mercy graduate, Violet Little, had proven to the world that there was a cure for Polio, she will address the nation over We the People next week. About that time I heard someone squeal-HELLO-It was Rose Hartsell, she is supervising 2nd St. Mary's with Mrs. Culbertson and is now Mrs. john York Wagner. We left the ofiice after saying hello to Mrs. Hansen, Mrs. Bryant, fit was a boyj and Mrs. Gray and went immediately to the dining room, we could hardly eat, all the delicious food for talking and reminiscing. We looked around to see who was missing, it was Mac McCall, where was she? Millie Woodruff, who by the way broke all records swimming the width of the canal last week had flown in from Panama, said Mac was in the jungles of Africa trying desperately to find a positive cure for Erythro- cystosis. Agnes Tucker who is supervisor of a Psychiatric Ward at Seton Institute, was here, had received a letter from Olivia Siquenza and Maria Blaz saying they were sorry they couldn't be with us, they were unable to book passage from Guam and then too they were busy organizing a new school of nursing there. Captain Betty Hill just walked in, a full fiedged Army nurse, had just returned from japan and had so many interesting things to tell us about. Always was an adventure hunter! Betty Spradley was right behind her in uniform, she had to work this P. M., Betty is supervising Znd Main in the afternoons. Gwen Edwards is nurse for the Federal Reserve Branch Bank. Virginia Smith was present and is doing Red Cross disaster nursing, just returned from a mine cave-in in Alabama. Sister Rosaria had the latest R. N. magazine with her and on the cover was a picture of Gwen Ingle who is modeling for R. N. and taking courses for her B. S. at Columbia University in New York, also in this edition was the beautiful face of Sylvia Hampton urging people to help fight heart disease. fSorry you two couldn't be with usj. Sitting in a huddle were those who majored in Obstetrics, Dot Haw- ley, Delivery Room, jean Fowler, Nursery, Sister Fidelis, Delivery Room. Gladys Armstrong who is Doctor Page's surgical assistant was talking with Sister Assumpta who is Superintendent of Nurses when suddenly Sister Carmel came down and said she needed some more help on 3rd Main, so away went Sister to find an extra nurse -somewhere. Velda Geer, what are you doing with Z1 wrap-a-round on? Assistant Supervisor of Pediatrics! That's wonderful, and your husband is practicing here at Mercy too! He's a Pediatrician isn't he? Betty Safrit and Peggy McNeil fiew in from Raleigh just for the evening, also with them was Marie Sealey, who is nursing at N. C. State infirmary, Betty is now Mrs. Potter and Peggy, Mrs. Walker, they are working for prominent doctors in Raleigh. Near by in Durham is Jewel Turner working for Dr. Sam Parker, an outstanding Obstetrician. His schedule was so hlled, jewel could not be with us. Mrs. Seth Cranford fMamie Ella Thompsonj brought one of her students to look over our Obstetrical Depart- ment while she was at the banquet, she is Superintendent of the new hospital in Wadesboro. Edna Moore came with her, Edna is doing a fine job as night supervisor there. Besides caring for her two small children, who she showed us pictures of, Mrs. Ross Brigman fMickey Lewisj is helping out with private duty, also Doris Warner fMrs. Carol Criscoej. Doris can't decide which phase of nursing she likes best. Libby Norris and Doris jean Thomas fMrs. Ed Cookej told us all about their work - industrial nursing. Libby is in Georgetown, Doris jean in Kannapolis. Nita Lou jenkins and ,Iennie Karlsen who by the way are married too and are working side by side in Public Health in Concord. David finally left the Barber Shop Quartet and he and his wife, former Shirley Thompson are living in Clarkton, Shirley was late as she couldn't find a baby sitter. Gosh, didn't Carolyn Brookshire look good, she is Director of the Charlotte Day Nursery, Marty Hooper is her assistant. Billie Borders told us about the surgical technique at Bellevue Hospital in New York, she is in charge of the Operating Room. So proud of all of our nurses ..., Nursing is a noble profession and our nurses have certainly proven that they are among the best. Diary, I will close until we meet again, hoping it will be sooner than another decade. l , lHl HHSS llllll We, the class of 1950, being of sound body and sane mind, do hereby dispose of our treasured traits and prized possessions in this our last will and testament. It grieves us deeply to be forced to deprive our nursing school of our honored presence, so we leave these final bequests with the sincere hope that they will serve to keep forever green the memory of the class of 50.
