One recent result of their work is the counselling and guidance outline which has been adopted this year by schools throughout America following experimental use locally. Q7 Dear Mercy students and faculty, For the third year in its history the Mercy family approaches commencement. Now we in the class of '58, who watched our big sisters among the Pioneers with awe and admiration on a June night two years ago, claim this june and this commencement as very specially our own. Looking back on our high school career we know we have been enriched in countless ways. We are now the fortunate trustees of a Catholic education, invaluable to us because it embraces all fields leading to Truth. But not all of our education has come from textbooks and studies. Wfhat senior can forget the glow of pride she felt when we conducted our first school assembly on our own? Who will forget our first class dance, Carousel, or that night of cherry blossom magic in our junior year, Oyasuminasai? None can count the graces bestowed on us during the quiet days of retreat but many of us trace Christ's call to a hushed moment before Him in the chapel. How many times we cheered ourselves hoarse at a varsity game or laughed 'til we cried over a rollicking skit at a feastday program! We may not have known it then, but we realize now that every event, every trouble or triumph, every cherished friendship was a thread in the bright fabric of our high school education. That is why we seniors are so very grateful to each one of you at Mercy. You were our education, for what we are is what we have become from being with you. It is diflicult to bid goodbye to school and friends we've known so well. It is easier to say thank you- to all of you who have made possible our June night. Award magna cum laude 56 and 57 onother lomb, O Lomb of God behold In August before her senior year Judy Pedretti left this world to go home to God. We who knew her remember the little things that endeared her to us: that sudden laugh- ter the spring in her step the way she had of winking when she smiled. But more than these, we remember the womanliness of udy chief housekeeper for her widowed father and little mother to her younger sister. God was Good to share her with us for even a little while. Their work really began in the summer, however, as they planned an outer space theme for the first dance of the school year and spent hours cutting and paint- ing spoon men and planets. In step with theeunifying spirit of the Space age the 1958 council strove to strengthen the student body's bond of oneness: realizing that student sentiment favored a school ring to replace class rings, the olii- cers, in February, examined various designs and stones, finally choosing a ruby in a cushioned setting with the school motto, Ad jesum Per Mariam engraved on the band. The council planned the all-school Mission Mixer and at day's end, weary but exul- tant, they counted the section returns, totalling 1230 dollars, half of which was donated to the Propagation of the Faith, half towards this year's Student Council project, a new stage for Barrett Hall. Then they turned their successful hand to writing a school con- stitution, to furnish students with a written expression of the student body's aims, poli- cies, regulations, and activities. Before the outgoing nine retired from office they in- stalled a. shrine of Our Lady in the student council room in memory of the late student body secretary, judy Pedretti. To the new student council they then entrusted the cares and joys of their ofiicesz hours of work shared,,the accord reached by discussion, another member's thoughtful thank you for a job well done. Especially, though, did they bestow the chance to learn and grow through the formative channels of student government. nit 53 it M.. 38 'fi s, student control SENIOR STUDENT CONTROL. Mothers of Mercy Guild are combinations of hostess, nurse, businesswoman, chef de cuisine, chauffeur, guardian angel and fairy godmother. Besides manning the office or the controls of the family car when needed and doing the million little things that only mothers remember to do, Guild members sponsored events to advance the scholarship fund and payments on chapel furnishings The officers' Silver Tea and other freshmen mothers feel at home while . the annual Fall Luncheon and Fashion Show enabled veteran members to be models for a day. Artistic members displayed original centerpieces at a dessert-tea in November, then turned their hands to cake baking and serving for their husbands and daughters at the annual Sweetheart Party. Thirty mothers enrolled in a Red Cross first aid course, geared to civilian defense, and both mothers and dads attended a Guild-sponsored Cana Conference in February. The year closed with a successful rag and clothing drive. Wim is fi 5110fPef? We fhfflk SANTA CLAUS coMEs TO SCHOOL one pre christmas mo the answer ISI Wonderful!
