0I'el,UOI' ln December, l957, Mercy High School was featured on a half-hour television program entitled Coffee Break. This pro- gram was so well received and created so much enthusiasm that we thought it would be entertaining and enlightening to present, through the courtesy of Channel MHS, A Year At Mercy High School, showing all of the school and not just a few fragments. We hope you enjoy yourselves as we interview the seniors: peek in at the junior, sophomore, and freshman homeroomsp meet a few members of our various clubs and learn about their functions, enjoy the dances, plays, and musicals: cheer the athletes in victory and defeat, attend our classes and meet the faculty. Before we begin our program, let's take a look at what Our Holy Father has written about television since it has become such an important part of our lives. Come and read! But most of all, apply what you have read, for you are tomorrow's leaders. It is common knowledge, said Our Holy Father in his recent encyclical, Miranda Prorsus, that television . . . needs the benefits and safeguards of alert vigilance. We, the Seniors of 1958, being products of a Catholic education, realize the ever-growing need of people who will do their share in keeping Christian principles in television. We are ready to do our part to promote and encourage good moral T.V. programs whether we have a close or remote con- tact with the industry. We will be mindful of Our Holy Father's words, We patiently exhort Catholics well qualified by their learning, sound doctrine and knowledge of arts . . . to turn their attention to this new art and give their active co-operation, so that whatever benefits the past and true prog- ress have contributed to the mind's development may be also employed in full measure to the advantage of television. Realizing that television has a power and efficacy of its own, and that it is found in almost all modern homes, we understand the influence it can have on its viewers. Due moderation of its use and prudence in selecting programs are duties which Our Holy Father asks us to remember in our future vocation, perhaps as parents of the future Catholic citizens. Therefore, with Our Lady of Television as our inspiration, and Our Holv Father's encyclical as our guide, we will try to advance television to the kind of art that may not be at the service of error or the ,snares of vice, but may prove to be rather a help 'to educate and train men, and recall them to their higher state.' f -3-
