. . .xdf mercy Mercian Statt Two channels throuqh which members oi the student body experience the power of the written word and the value ot a picture are The Mercy Shield and the Mercian. ln its ten years, The Mercy Shield has con- sistently received an excellent rating from the Catholic Press and the Missouri lnterscholastic Press Association, both of which it is a mem- ber. A position on The Shield not only provides an opportunity tor writing: the student reporter is also schooled in research, in evaluating news, and in proper interview techniques. The yearly publication, the Mercicm. is a pictorial summary ot school events. This year, for protessiondl growth as well as enjoyment, members of the Mercicm stdti, and The Shield staff, attended a journorlism convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Representatives of the Mercicm also took advantaqe ot two work- shops in the St. Louis area to qain new ideas for planning a better annual which would be worthy oi praise from their fellow students now, and a treasure oi memories for the future. f7l.e Ciiflwdc lll The spiritual life of the student body of Mercy High School is exemplified by devotion to the Sacred Heart of lesus and to Our Blessed Lady. The primary purpose of the Sacred Heart Club is to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of lesus by making the first Fridays and by consecrating individuals and homes to the Sacred LEGION OF MARY Saffa, Musler, Kessels, Maassen, Thompson. Barbieri, Bommarito, Hastings, Hoerchler Heart. While this club promotes devo- tion to Our Lord, the Legion of Mary devotes itself to the Mother of God. The purpose of this club is to bring souls to Christ through His Mother by helping in orphanages and hospitals, and by teaching catechism to those who are deprived of a Catholic edu- cation. Membership in the Young Christian Students organization is characterized SACRED HEART CLUB Dunman, Scheulen, Eckstein, Balkenbush, Filla by zeal, apostolic-mindedness, and an awareness of a students role as a member of Christ's Mystical Body. At each meeting, members discuss with their moderator teen-age problems and interests. By putting into practice the results of these discussions, and by encouraging other students to do so, the members endeavor to make the atmosphere of school life happier by making it more Christian.
