This pro- gram was so well received and created so much enthusiasm that we thought it would be entertaining and enlightening to present, through the courtesy of Channel MHS, A Year At Mercy High School, showing all of the school and not just a few fragments. We hope you enjoy yourselves as we interview the seniors: peek in at the junior, sophomore, and freshman homeroomsp meet a few members of our various clubs and learn about their functions, enjoy the dances, plays, and musicals: cheer the athletes in victory and defeat, attend our classes and meet the faculty. Before we begin our program, let's take a look at what Our Holy Father has written about television since it has become such an important part of our lives. Come and read! But most of all, apply what you have read, for you are tomorrow's leaders. It is common knowledge, said Our Holy Father in his recent encyclical, Miranda Prorsus, that television . . . needs the benefits and safeguards of alert vigilance. We, the Seniors of 1958, being products of a Catholic education, realize the ever-growing need of people who will do their share in keeping Christian principles in television. We are ready to do our part to promote and encourage good moral T.V. programs whether we have a close or remote con- tact with the industry. We will be mindful of Our Holy Father's words, We patiently exhort Catholics well qualified by their learning, sound doctrine and knowledge of arts . . . to turn their attention to this new art and give their active co-operation, so that whatever benefits the past and true prog- ress have contributed to the mind's development may be also employed in full measure to the advantage of television. Realizing that television has a power and efficacy of its own, and that it is found in almost all modern homes, we understand the influence it can have on its viewers. Due moderation of its use and prudence in selecting programs are duties which Our Holy Father asks us to remember in our future vocation, perhaps as parents of the future Catholic citizens. Therefore, with Our Lady of Television as our inspiration, and Our Holv Father's encyclical as our guide, we will try to advance television to the kind of art that may not be at the service of error or the ,snares of vice, but may prove to be rather a help 'to educate and train men, and recall them to their higher state.' f -3- clm ind fraforri Sponsor THE MCST REVEREND IOSEPH E. Meyers The Student Council directs many religious, cultural, and social programs on Channel MHS. This organization is composed of four senior officers, and representatives from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior home- rooms who proved their ability by ruling Uni- versity City on Government Day. The first in the 1957-58 series of religious programs was the October outdoor Living Rosary. The religious highlight of the year was the crowning of Our Blessed Mother by the May Queen. A first in this year's pro- gram was the Lenten Mission Drive in the cafeteria. Besides the annual Halloween and Back- ward dances, and the Iunior-Senior Prom, this year's Student Council sponsored two addi- tional dances - the Mercian Mixer for the -3- school annual, and the Easter Dance, the pro- ceeds of which went to the missions. Other distinctive features of the S.C. on Channel MHS this year were a panel dis- cussion of foreign students, crowning of a queen at the Iunior-Senior Prom, and a rnusi- cal Christmas assembly. Since understudies are an important part of any program, the Student Council takes this opportunity to acknowledge the co-opera- tion of these alternates: Ron Bohn, Frank Gal- lagher, Don Clervi, Charles Franco, Dan How- ell, Ierry Kettler, Ioyce Purl, Doris Schoenoff, loe Suftko, Diane Vogan, Tony Cafazza, Tom Eckert, Pat Garrity, Carol Knight, Fran Kerr, Anna Kay Roberts, Al Scheltinga, Carol Ward, Rita Balkenbush, LaVerne Eckstein, Mike Kahle, Deanna Held, Dennis O'Hallaron, Au- drey Seiler, and loan Werner. -9- .Student ounci Qf icerd WARMBOLD, IUDIT1-I F.-President St. Catherine of Sienna Her aim is set for higher things: To God her soul in prayer sings. Channel MHS followed us all day, recording the Mass at Christ the King Churchy the breakfast served by members of the Mercy Mothers' Club: the ring ceremony: and the inspirational talks by Father Holland and Sister Mary Barbara on our responsibilities to God, to man, and to ourselves. Though Channel MHS recorded current events, it could not record those events which we remember as important during our four years --some are big, some are small, some are tangible, some are intan- gibleg but to us they are all impor- tant: . . . the football field, which added the finishing touch to our sports program, was dedicated during our freshman year . . . the Thespian ability of our class when as sophomores they had leading roles in the 1956 K.0.D. Play . . . the sportsmanship and spirit displayed as either par- ticipants in the game itself or as spectators . . . the building of new classrooms and rooms especially designed for the Mu- sic Department during 1957. .. the crowning of the first Iunior- Senior Prom queen on April 25 . . . and, another first, the most important first, the opportunity of receiving Holy Communion each day before lunch . . . and finally, the scholastic achieve- ment of some of our classmates who received scholarships. We have received much from Mercy High School, not all of which can be expressed in words or ever repaid, we can, however, and do, express our gratitude to God and His Sweet Mother for all the graces they have made available to us during our years at Mercy. May the patroness of our school, Our Lady of Mercy, bless the members of the faculty who have so gen- erously contributed to our intellec- tual, spiritual, moral, physical, and social formation. Mercy High, we'll miss you! Let us set the scene for the entrance ot our Senior Queens, prominent in two momem- tous events of this year. As May is the month dedicated to Mary, the student body venerated the Queen ot heaven and earth at a May Day Coronation ceremony. Qur own May Queen, Maryann Bommarito, was elected to place the wreath on the tlower-bedecked statue ot Qur Lady. The Rosary was recited as members of the court, consisting of Student Council represen- tatives and senior members of the Legion ot Mary, entered. Following the crowning, an Act ot Consecration to our Mother of Mercy was renewed. Hymns to our Blessed Mother provided a titting conclusion to the ceremony. Premiering this year, a Senior Queen reigned over the Iunior-Senior Prom. Five girls, nom- inated trom the senior class, composed the court. A queen was elected by the vote ot those couples attending the dance. The Auditorium, enveloped in a blue mist, lent itself well to the Prom theme Rhapsody in Blue. CC we Kurioua auage v With curiosity we approached and with joyful satisfaction we departed. We refer to the nights of February 8, 9, and l6, when the senior class and Channel MHS presented the warm-hearted and delightful com- edy, The Curious Savage, which more than satisfied the curiosity of the eager audience while providing skillful and talented entertainment. Eleven talented Mercian Thes- pians under the skilled direction of the Reverend Raymond Rustige pre- sented the appealing argument that love and understanding are far more valuable than stocks or bonds. By setting his gentile satire against the background of a sanitarium for eccentric people, Iohn Patrick drew some delightful and sharp contrasts between the supposed in- mates with their ideal world of kind- ness and understanding and the money-seeking relatives of the lead- ing character with their sane world of greed and mistrust. The author touchingly concludes that while the make-believe world offers warmth and understanding, it is not the solution: but, rather, his heroine should go forth once more and try to bring a little of this atmosphere into life and make the outside world a little better place. Pathos, humor and a rich under- standing of human nature were the satisfying ingredients of this senior production. Top rate acting from one and all, directing and technical support along with enthusiastic stu- dent support resulted in this being one of the most memorable high- lights of our senior year. w -.37- glee cvflnalemfuakea 'I Junior Class Hats off to the understudies! The primary purpose of the Sacred Heart Club is to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of lesus by making the first Fridays and by consecrating individuals and homes to the Sacred LEGION OF MARY Saffa, Musler, Kessels, Maassen, Thompson.
