Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1988 volume: “
Of suddenly feeling like a minute shell thrown about in an uncontrollable sea of passion and then, just as quickly, lying in the peaceful warmth of the undisturbed sand. Of. like that shell, not knowing where this sea will take us next or where it is we even want to go. Of the unrest in these waters 1 will sing you a song. 4 I’ll sing you a song as loud as the piercing screams of gulls as they swoop and splash in the water in pursuit of their unsuspecting prey. Of their determination as they try again and again, even after what seems like an eternity of failure. Of how, unlike those birds, we sometimes abandon the things we desire for lack of resoluteness and conviction. 7 h'J rw y 14 A RAVE REVIEW A TRIUMPH BRAVO . THUMBS UP . . Movies celebrate the times of our lives. The silver screen brings tears and laughter in the same two hours. We can look back on life and see some prominent stars. To us, the Class of 1988, we see our life story as a hit movie and our parents have played a starring role in it. They are there to help us through rough times. They renewed our hopes not only in life but in ourselves. It is to these talent agents in our life that we dedicate Monarch '88. Update S.A.D.D. rn - ! i ■ H THE RAP GROUP “Let’s save lives’’ is the theme. Sure they know it’s going to involve much effort and creativity. However, this doesn’t seem to stop the Mercy S.A.D.D. chapter. As a matter of fact, these students are more than willing to educate and help preserve people. They meet every Monday afternoon at 3:00. During these meetings, many projects are dealt with efficient- ly- Among contemplated ventures, is one of last year’s inven- tions, which was the idea of making a stamp. This is given to local auto dealers and repairers to put on their customers’ bills. Hiree different slogans have been used on the stamp. They are “Why Die? Don’t DWI”, by John Romano, a sophomore at Mercy High School; “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk”, and “Keep the Keys, Keep a Friend”. Mercy S.A.D.D. provides the stamp, pad, and refills of ink (green). So far, six dealers have helped to put this fabrication into ef- fect. In addition to the stamp project, Cornell University is now presenting a leadership training program to people in high school. S.A.D.D. members are attending workshops each week for nine weeks. It’s their plan to visit sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in order to educate them on alcohol. Students in the special Ed Cleary program will also educate Cleary students in other schools. More of an impact must be made on people in regard to driving while intoxicated. With more and more members of S.A.D.D. working together, this can be achieved. Therefore, there are plans underway for Mercy High School’s program, Hands Across Town (HAT), to join with Riverhead High School’s Community Awareness Program (CAP). If you recall, a while ago, three students performed an ex- cellent rap song over the loudspeakers. These people were Ed Vinski, Ron Bozuhoski, and Ivory Dixon. The writers of the song are Holly Manning and Cheryl Sheehan. This valuable piece will be aired by WBIJ as a public service announce- ment, which will take place in the second week of December. Also, on the Friday before Halloween, S.A.D.D. displayed their generosity by handing out lollipops with their slogan of care to all the students of our school. Above all update information, we need to mention that the Mercy chapter has been in operation for three years. Because of this, it will soon become a charter member, which represents three years of devotion and hard work. This is con- sidered an honor, and deserves much congratulations. S.A.D.D. is an organization that cares. New members are always welcomed, and their ideas greatly appreciated. With this important input, S.A.D.D.’s many good intentions can be put to use. As a result, a sense of hope and happiness is con- tributed to our world. Under the leadership of Mrs. Gloria Mar- tinez the students conducted an Awareness Day. This pro- gressive program was organized in order to make the school com- munity aware of the crucial issues in our society so that young people might be more knowledgeable before forming their own opinions and ideas. The sociology students assembled a program of thirty- four workshops on various issues: aids, abortion, rape, divorce, suicide, crack, etc. Then professior..l and competent speakers were invited to present material and lead discussions.
