BISHOP GERALD J. RYAN D.D. VICAR OF SUFFOLK A natural leader. Reverend Gerald J. Ryan is well suited to his recent appointment as Auxiliary Bishop to Suffolk County. His dedication to Getting the job done well inspires respect among his close associates. His warm sense of humor has gained him friends throughout the diocese. At last year’s gradu- ation mass, the Bishop's pres- ence demonstrated his active interest in our own Mercy High School. We therefore, wish Bishop Ryan success in the future in hopes of his continued involvement here at Mercy. FATHER JAMES CARMODY As chaplain of Mercy High School, Father Car- mody plays a vital role in Mercy life. The stu- dents are grateful for his advice and guidance during their often confusing high school years. Father is always happy to assist with the masses which take place throughout the school year. Yet Father does not limit himself to spiritual activi- ties. His course in Film Studies helps lend a cul- tural balance to the Mercy curriculum. Thank you. BISHOP OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE FRIEND SHEPHERD Two years ago, The Most Reverend )ohn R. McGann was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. A staunch believer in Catholic Education, the bishop is firmly resolved to support and promote this system in any way he can. His concern has been especially evident at Mercy, the only Cath- olic high school on the east end of Long Island. Bishop McCann has re- peatedly demonstrated his appreciation of our school's very existence and of the extreme dedication of its faculty. On several occasions he has made special visits to Mercy. The most vis- ible evidence of his in- terest in Mercy High School has been his an- nual participation in the graduation mass. We can think of no more fit- ting recognition of this man's devotion and leadership than to dedi- cate Monarch '78 to Bishop |ohn R.
