FOREWORD THIS BUILDING . ... is constructed just like any other building. With concrete supported by steel, covered on the outside by brick, and on the inside by wood and tile, it could easily be a factory or an office building. After all, it's only a shelter built by man for protection. And yet, there is something different about this building. It is warm. Its warmth is generated by the spirit of youth, the spirit that will determine the path that the next generation will follow. If you listen, you can hear a heart beating within this building. It is the heartbeat of Christian education that will guide the spirit of youth to choose the path of Christ. This building is a school. Its warmth and its heart- beat come from the dedicated teachers and determined students who work together within its walls to edu- cate and to be educated, so that the future will find warmth and love everywhere, and hear the heartbeat of Christianity echoing throughout the world. This is the reason for this building's existence, and for'our having spent four years working under its protection. This building, this school, has unlocked the future for the Class of '67. It is now up to us to walk through its doors and face the world with the same warmth of spirit and the same strength of heart that have, for the last four years, set this building apart from all others. With this spirit and this strength we will certainly follow the path of Christ and conquer the world for Him. 2 CONTENTS FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION GRADUATES CLASSES ACTIVITIES SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS. Thus the faculty is the framework of this building; we are indebted to them for their continuous, essential, and indefatigable support, guidance, and enlightenment. We, the students, can always feel confident that there is someone who is concerned about our achievements, our follies, our joys, and our misfortunes. We are fortunate to have people whom we can feel free to approach with our problems. Be- cause of this personal interest in the student body, the faculty no doubt finds us more receptive to the spiritual and academic warmth that radiates from the priceless Christian education offered in this building. - ■ ' REVEREND DAVID G. We came to Mercy with a concrete foun- dation poured by grammar school educators and hardened by everyday experience. Mer- cy's dedicated teachers are its very frame- work, for their enthusiastic support and guidance have been something, maybe we, tile symbolizes a facet of each graduate’s character, polished to perfection by a truly Christian education. The majestic spire sig- nifies the goal for which we have been striv- ing, preparation for a competent and Chris- tian advent into the modem world. The cross atop the argent spire reminds us that our ultimate goal is heaven. If we live the principles that have been instilled in us here, we shall attain it. We, the '67 graduates, aspire to live up to the ideals established within this build- the graduates, have taken for granted, but without them this building would crumble. The innumerable bricks encompassing this ing and to promulgate them to our realms of influence. JEFFREY A. ANTHONY Student Council 4; National Honor Society 4; Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4 NICHOLAS F. Nevertheless, a school void of students is but impersonal walls and lumber. Within this material Structure we can find happiness, school spirit, outstanding scholarship, and contagious vivacity displayed by the students of Mercy. Mercy students are forever afire with the warmth of youth and of Christianity, whether they are in chemistry class observing the properties of hydrogen or on the new football field spurring our very first team to victory. Yes, a beacon of truth shines forth from this building, imparting to all students the fire of Christian knowledge and encompassing the varied realsm of family, community, and world affairs. It is this warmth that will characterize Mercy students as model Christians and citizens in all their future endeavors. When the fire of youth is but a glowing ember, the Mercy alumnus will remain a student within this building, if only in his heart. JUNIORS REINFORCE Junior year finds us confronted with many deci- sions. We have successfully completed two years at Mercy, and the formulation of plans and the making of decisions concerning our future weigh heavily upon us. Composites of our interests, abilities, and accumu- lated knowledge, totalled by computer-marked tests, personal observations, and professional advice, help us to choose subjects and courses which fit the plans we have mapped out for our future. Stimulation of the mind and self-expression are points accented in the third year. Together, they give our third year studies a definite purpose, which is achieved by the formula- tion and combination of original ideas. Each course offered at Mercy contributes to the proper education of young Catholic men and women. Religion strengthens our moral and spiritual founda- tions. Mastering foreign languages, besides providing us with new skills, also acquaints us with other peoples and cultures of the world. Patriotism and loyalty are spurred on by American History. For those interested in the fast-moving world of finance, our business course offers great opportunities for ac- quiring the skills necessary for succeeding in business careers. Mathematics teaches us to think in logical order. Science is the key which unlocks for us the mystery of the world. It enables us to discover and shape the resources of nature. Junior year is our final preparation for college entrance. Careful instruction and guidance, the kind provided by the faculty of Mercy High School, gives us the potential for insuring a bright future for our- selves and our families. It is up to us to use that po- tential to the utmost. Diligence in study, or the lack of it, in Junior year, will determine how bright our future will be. Among these, the traits and habits of sophomores are the most notorious and the best remembered. Having themselves just escaped from the limitations of freshman year, the Wise Fools” take great pride in their new found superiority. But this superiority is not allowed in any w'ay to interfere with their second year studies. For the greater part, the sophomores are firmly entrenched in the academic life of Mercy High School. In their study of religion, they find the answers to many problems about themselves and their religion. Sophomore English deepens their knowledge of the literary works of man. Besides learn- ing the laws that govern geometric figures, the math students discover the value of sound reasoning processes. In today's troubled world, a knowledge of the cultures and languages of other peoples is essential; the study of modern foreign language begins for most in sophomore year. The study of latin unfolds the culture of Julius Caesar and the ancient Romans. Man is a social being, and the sophomores learn from the successes and failures of past societies in their study of world history. Sophomore year begins the study of business subjects which develop the skills necessary for success in the business world. Some of the subjects studied in sophomore year are cho- sen by the student. The choices these students make at this time are the first of many that will determine their places in society. These students, Mercy's freshmen, are for the most part eager to become a working part of the living organism which is Mercy High School. In achieving this goal, they develop habits and formulate ideas that will influence their entire educa- tion and indeed their entire lives. Freshman religion begins the explanation of truths upon which they will base their entire Christian lives. Citizenship education ex- plains to them the merits and the faults of the American system of government. General science and biology open their eyes to the wondrous order in God's world. Mathematics trains them to organ- ize in their minds the thoughts and concepts taught them, 'in order that in times to come they will be better prepared to comprehend concepts which stagger the imagination. In English, the freshmen are exposed to any number of literary works and styles in order that they will be aware of all the creative works of man that are available to them, and also that they will be able to accept the thoughts of other men with an open-mind. In this manner, the freshman program orients the student in the world of education so that he can best obtain from it all that he needs to live a Christian life, one that will win for him, with the grace of God, eternal salvation. 1st row: D Gadzinski, A. With its bright figures and blaring buzzers this board proclaims to all the fate of Mercy’s Monarchs. However, it can only proclaim the ability of our athletes and not the won- derful spirit of sportsmanship fostered by the coaches, teachers, and parents of Mercy's competitors. In this gym, and on the spacious athletic field built by the United Parents, we have learned the value of a true competitive spirit, one that seeks to win but is also will- ing to accept an honest defeat. Just as this scoreboard reflects our athletic ability, so will our future lives reflect the training in sports- manship and honest competition that we have received in Merq's Sports’ Program. Al- though few in number, they were mighty, as the effect of their spirit was felt throughout the whole gym during tense moments of exciting games. The cheerleaders this year, as in oth- ers, helped the school body communi- cate enthusiasm to the team. Without them, much of the zest and lustre of the basketball season would have been lost. The Varsity cheerleaders instill their enthusiasm into the crowd. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS: starting at left bottom of M: V. Pizzuta, P. Dowler, D. Patrick, J. Hoffmann, M. Hourigan, J. Casey, P. Football at Mercy was given a big boost in its first season by five hard working cheerleaders. The girls were on the sidelines at every game to cheer for the team. Their spirit and enthusiasm was an assurance to the team that the whole school was behind them. As Mercy’s football team enters its second season a little stronger for having had a year’s experience, so will the school spirit behind the team be a little stronger for having had these five girls to cheer the team on. Football cheerleaders: bottom row: Susan Kreitsek, Teri Micka- liger; top row: Chris Kostuk. All things that go up must come down is proven by Joe Twomey and Peter Malet. 130 TO VICTORY Nine men upheld the honor of Mercy High School in cross-country competition this year. Although small in size, Mercy’s distance team showed a large amount of strength and spirit. Long hours of exercise, and workouts on the dunes at Reeves Beach developed in the team the stamina vitally necessary for the two and one-half mile cross-country run. This year, for the first time, Coach Brown entered his team in competition with big city teams. In a meet at Van Cortland Park, Bronx, Mercy's runners made a good showing in consideration of their small number. Forty-six teams com- peted in the meet. Tom Twomcy upper lefl, Bill Meyer center, and Peter Malet lower right, strengthen their endurance by running on the dunes at Reeves Beach. Peter Malet Onward and Upward! —symbolic of Mercy's cross-country achievements. TRACK TEAM IN ACTION Mercy has built a track team that has gone to every meet knowing it has the ability to win. It was built on a core of experienced trackmen, who came through with individual victories, supported by achievements of new members to give glory to Mercy through team effort. Bill Meyer's hopes are Up in the air. First and bottom row: W. Meyer, R. Mangel, R. Klein, T. Twomey; Second row: J. Castiglione, D. Ziemacki, J. Twomey, K. Reed, A. BASEBALL MONARCHS ON THE MOVE This year, Mercy's baseball team showed a marked improvement. The blending of last year’s players with several talented newcomers proved to be a smooth playing unit, as our team showed that we could win or lose with the best of our competitors. Through vig- orous practice and heads-up ball playing, the Mercy name has been widely spread by our baseball team. Joe Twomey braces himself for a collision at the plate. Coach Larry Doscinski 137 PUTT IT THERE Mercy's golfers bring with them to the golf course the competitive and sportsmanlike spirit which is the forte of all Mercy's sports teams. Practicing at Northampton Country Club, the team gains the experience which is vital to the game of golf. This experience combined with the skill gained from Mr. Murray’s coaching has put Mercy's golf team among the top competitors in its league. The team has also had victories over a few local public schools. Paul Verdcrese studies the obstacles to a straight putt. Joe Goubeaud, Mercy's woodsman , hopes this ball will fly a little straighter than the last one. 138 Who said golf is a safe game? asks Brian Frohne, forced to the ground by low-flying golf balls. MERCY SERVES A WARNING TO This season, Mercy's tennis team faced a difficult chal- lenge. Hard hit by the loss of three ace players, the prospects for a successful season seemed bleak. But the determined Monarchs played with spirit and gritty aggressiveness, win- ning more than their fair share of matches. Led by seven veterans, the team displayed fine form as they notched some decisive wins and endured some agonizing defeats. Their high caliber style and sportsmanship earned the respect of both friend and foe. Charlie Kuiawslci follows through. Standing: B. Kasold, R. Pulick, C. Kujawski, H. Bodenheimer; Kneeling: J. GIRLS’ SPORTS PROGRAM EXPANDS With the great amount of importance put on physical fitness in the past few years, girls' sports programs are growing in popularity in many high schools across the nation. Mercy is no exception. Since soccer and field hockey have been added to the program, Mercy's girls now compete interscholastically in six sports. Besides those mentioned above, the girls play softball, basket- ball, tennis, and volleyball. Meg Turner concentrates on the infield but Ginny McKay plays it free and easy. Eileen Kelly's expression indicates the large amount of effort she puts into her swing. Tina Jenkins is the ace of the pitching staff. 143 144 Chris Kostuk anxiously awaits the outcome of Mighty Meg Turner's swing. Even with a bandaged knee Pat Hawkins shows her winning form. Ellen Platt seems to have won the jump-ball. Is Suzanne Doroski crouching be- cause of eagerness or fright? Page sponsored by KOTA PRODUCTS. INC. A successful block aids the play. Point before impact. HIGHLIGHTS Within this building we have participated in various events that highlight our academic and social endeavors at Mercy. We have cherished memories of three November days when Washington was in- vaded by foreign Monarchs . Not one of us will forget the pleasure of placing the gold ring, bearing the impressive Class of '67, upon his finger for the first time. For the 2ealous students there was the annual Monarch dinner-theater party. For the bene- fit of the college-bound students we hosted a College Day featuring an all-star roster of institutions to which we may carry the spirit of Christ instilled in us at Mercy. These are but a few of the memorable highlights of another year spent within the guiding protection of this building. MERCY SENDS DELEGATION This group of statues was donated by Mercy High School. Forty dollars worth of ads reserved a place at the Yearbook dinner- theater party for eighty-five Mercy students. The annual party is the staff's way of rewarding those who solicit ads for the Monarch. This year's trip took us to the Steak Pub in Huntington. Manor Lane, Jamesport, N.Y. 183 IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR When we were just fourteen It was a very good year. It was a time to be bold As each day did unfold Its treasures so keen. A new- life convened When we were just fourteen. When we were fifteen years old It was a very good year. We gained sophisticate airs, Learned of Gallic affairs And Silas's gold. Our minds we did mold When we were fifteen years old. When we w ere seventeen It was a very good year. A year of turning our rings. Caps and gowns, and such things As the pretty prom queen. The wrorld was a dream When we were seventeen. When we were sixteen It was a very good year. It w as a year to mature, To become quite secure In each other's esteem. Friendships reigned supreme, When w e w ere sixteen. These precious years are gone And though we must move on, We shall always recall. The joy of these halls. The love that was here. Our words are sincere: IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY ► i % • V. ■■ •'£ •• ■ . •« . • vy.; £. •;. ' ' y . : •. .v
