Growth is the only “GROWTH IS THE ONLY EVIDENCE OF LIFE” “As I came from Thee, As I am made through Thee As I live in Thee So may I return to Thee” John Henry Cardinal Newnian Misericordia presented by The Senior Class of Mercy High School River head, N. Y. conducted by Sisters of Mercy Brooklyn i Contents Foreword Dedication Faculty Seniors Classes Activities Features Alumni Patrons 97 •3 Ikt IMjd X marks the spot ,of Mercy’s future Biology Conservatory! ■ liiiHa r Our eastern horizon is beautified by the home of our nearest neighbors, the Rolle's. Foreword Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make our- selves do the things we have to do and to do them well. This is the Catholic idea of education, the education of the whole man through the teachings of Christ and the guidance of His Church. Lltimately we seek the control over our own powers and the direction of them toward our eternal goal. This control, this direction has a definite in- fluence on the shaping of our minds, the molding of our characters and the mark that we will leave on society. Our success in life will depend on our ap- plication of the education we have received. Knowing this, we can proceed to work out the eternal plan of our life that God has so lovingly prepared for us. Our four years at Mercy have, through steadfastness of purpose and com- mand over our own powers, affected a mental and spiritual maturity in each one of us. This growth in mind and spirit clearly evinces that as we live in Christ so shall we at last return to Him. His Excellency MOST REVEREND WALTER P. KELLENBERG Bishop of Rockville Centre 6 VERY REVEREND EDGAR P. Mat, alumnus of Mercy, is on a visit from Great Lakes training base. Casing the new school. 73 This one calls for concentration. Vinnv Murray and Judy Bonzak show their powers. The Navy’s in town. Richard Hajek and Maryann Demitra enjoy a smooth dance. i “Waltz me around again, Willie’’ oops Stanley—so says Isabelle Doyle as Stanley Cowan whirls her around. Stamps! Stamps! STAMPede at Mercy To sophomores Sandra Leonard, Darlice Murphy, Michel Everett and Sharon Leonard it was con- viviality! (?) It Was WORK! It Was FUN for seniors Mary Kelley and Kathy Doyle. Catholic Youth Day The Catholic Youth of his diocese have ever been close to the heart of our dear bishop. Under his patronage Catholic Youth Day was conducted at Brentwood, Long Island, October 12, 1960. Preliminary to the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, a meditation on “The Ideals of Catholic Youth” was made by students from fifty-six schools in the diocese. Both meditation and tab- leaux stressed the importance of a right choice of one's life’s work. To our beloved bishop may God grant the health, holiness and wisdom so im- portant in his work of guiding youth to the presence of the Master Steward to Whom they must one day render an ac- count. 76 Even the World Series couldn’t keep this trio away from Cath- olic Youth Day! Sister Mary Virgilius, Sister Mary Laurence, and Father Charles were Mercy’s Moderators for the day. Frank Vivona, Beverly Hass and Hugh Hogan take time out for a snap. 77 Opera tion La wn mo wer Many lawnmowers make light work as James Kingston, Vincent Murray and Paul Phillips com- bine efforts. An army travels on its stomach. So do Mercy stu- dents when they “pitch in” on a grass-cutting spree at St. Joseph’s Villa, Water Mill. 78 Those rings arc beautiful, aren’t they? While Gail Mansfield, Anne Meskill, John Mensch, and Hugh Hogan compare rings, Pete Ragone seems confused by the whole thing! Ring Ceremony “It won’t be long now!” Anne Muriel Scheu and Joan Kelly are Meskill seems to be looking into the future. happy with their rings. The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has just been made a memory by M. Scheu, P. Duffy, I. Doyle, R. Cor tese, and W. Scheu. Three weary walkers: D. Giranzini, V. Murray, and J. King- ston who linger longingly beside a sparkling foot saver. Trip to the Capitol We left early and returned late, and the time between we| filled with memories. We sang, we walked, we laughed, and we were stilled with awe and wonder by what we saw . . . By night we knew'no sleep, by day we knew onjy motion as we were exposed to the beauty and glory of what we viewed. . . . And when we returned it was late and we were filled. I This might be hard for Jimmy Kingston to explain. Now just sign here and the Washington monument is yours. Joe Strebel and Marie Ficurelli decided to leave it behind! 81 Book Fair “Step right up, there’s sure to be a winner! Pete Lampasona and Carey Wilson assist a hoarse Pete Hoffman. Browning before buying! Elizabeth Sali- var, Pat Duffy, Pat Kobryn, and Frances Vivona enjoy it. The paper back booth drew many customers. Per- haps it was the lovely salesgirls Marilyn Adi- pietro and Virginia Duffy. Pete Ragone looks incredulous at John Mensch’s claims of super sales. 83 1« Joe and Hugh in the bleachers. Too had there wasn’t a Notre Dame football game that day! Pat, Joe, and Barbara taking a well- earned rest in a scenic area. If you look closely you will find Mercy’s representatives at the Catholic Students Mission Crusade Convention . . . Sister Mary Aquinas, Hugh Hogan, Pat Duffy, and Barbara Guldi. 85 BOOK WEEK Two book worms—Robert Brandt and Alice Hastings show the Catholic aspect of reading. 86 An early start . . . Stanley Rudnicki thinks nothing of carting Webster’s Unabridged to class on occasion. Music Makers . . . Sophomores gather around Sr. Mary Aquin- as for a song festival. Artist . . . Catherine Szuster’s concentration and at- tention seem to lie paying dividends. Surveyors . . . F ete R a gone and Pat Duffy make a quick inspection at the new school. POTENTIAL Writer . . . Sky anti sea are one embracing each other and dwelling to- gether in a colorless wall stretching into oblivion. Behind its misty veil somewhere glows the sun. Gray waves beat on gray shore . . . the gray' word loneliness. White, timeless sand rises and falls like a dry sea: black, indomitable boulders are floating atop. Only two figures are visible and their aloneness prevents the despoiling of Nature’s majestic creation. It is quiet, it is barren, it is lonely, it is quite beautiful. JOSEPH STREBEL ’61 MERCY HIGH ALUMNI Under the guidance of Our Lady of Mercy, the first graduates stepped across the threshold of Alma Mater into a world replete with excited beckonings and entic- ing adventures. Their endeavors have brought some to college and career beginnings, some to the service of their country', and others have begun their life’s work of marriage and homemaking. May Our Lady of Mercy continue to obtain for them the graces to carry on their life’s work and guide them, our first Alumni, to the attainment of those goals and ideals that were set ltefore them when they were students at Mercy. 92 ALUMNI-VARS1TY GAME right); Marie Cevens (Nursing) chatting as usual. You’re out of condition Johnny Shields! (Notre Dame) Irene Crohan did some of her college research at Mercy Library! Matt’s only visiting.
