With the determination and courage of Mother Mary Michael, and her fellow sisters, Mercy Hospital became the first hospital in San Diego. In two floors rented from the Grant Central Hotel, at Sixth and Market, the hospital began as St. Joseph ' s Dispensary. It was opened on July 9, 1890, for all patients in the San Diego area. The Sisters worked diligently in these two upper-story floors for a year until the new hospital was completed on University Avenue. St. Joseph ' s Dispensary J- - MOTHER MA R Y MICHAEL Mother Mary Michael came to San Diego in 1890. She and her fellow sisters, received the blessing of Rt. Rev. Francis Mora, Bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles. A temporary hospital was set up while a site was being chosen for the present Mercy Hospital. At twenty-nine years of age, Mother Mary Michael and the Sisters of Mercy undertook this mission with only fifty dollars in their pockets. They entered an area of the state that was not only depressed, but bigoted, hostile, and prejudiced. The Sisters struggled hard to make their dream come true and were gradually accepted as an asset by this community. In October of 1922, Mother Mary Michael died, a victim of a heart attack. She never saw her dream completed, to build a newer and bigger Mercy Hospital. She gave her life to God and the healing of the sick. What was begun by this wonderful woman is the basis for what Mercy Hospital and Mercy College of Nursing are today. 13 St. Joseph ' s Sanitarium During the year after the opening of St. Joseph ' s Dispensary, the Sisters found the means to build a more adequate hospital. The site was chosen on University Avenue, in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. On April 25, 1891, St. Joseph ' s Sanitarium opened its doors to the people. It was a three-story building on ten acres of land, at a cost of $5, 200. At this time, there were nineteen patients. A home for the aged was built on the grounds, in 1893. After being enlarged twice, it served one hundred persons. A chapel, seating three hundred, was built in 1898, along with the addition of a west wing, which doubled its patient occupancy. The year 1900 saw the building of a two-story convent for the Sisters of Mercy, and in 1916, enough money was raised to build an annex to the east wing. There was another very important part to Mother Mary Michael ' s dream. She knew seventy years ago, as it is expressed today, that good nursing can be learned only in situations where good nursing exists. So to meet the needs for better nursing care in the enlarged physical facilities, she established St. Joseph ' s Training School for Nurses , in 1903. On May 31, 1906, ten sisters of Mercy comprised the first graduating class, some of whom are pictured here. This was the beginning of a long history of graduates from what was soon to become known as Mercy College of Nursing. When the Exposition of 1915 came to San Diego all the emergencies were sent to the hospital to be treated. The Nursing School was also growing and the State initiated accreditation of St. Joseph ' s Sanitarium Training School for Nurses in 1916. During the next four years plans for expansion of the school were overshadowed by the entrance of the United States into World War I and the consequent call for nurses into active service. During the thirteenth year of the nursing school, there appeared to be no knowledge or records of a graduating class. It seemed strange for it was in that year the school applied for state accreditation. 26 The veranda provided a setting for relaxation and conversation. The Hospital, located on Sixth and University not only took care of the sick but was a way of life for the Sisters, nurses and students. In 1921 the Sisters of St. Joseph ' s received a plot of land on Hillcrest Drive, overlooking Mission Valley. With this gift and the contributions from many generous friends, the dream of a newer and better Hospital came true. In 1932, Mercy Hospital School of Nursing became Mercy College of Nursing. The nurse who previously spent long hours staffing the hospital and complying to stringent rules, now took on a new outlook. She devoted more time to the why ' s of nursing through formal education in the college. Her technical skills, vital as they were, were now backed with meaningful knowledge of their purpose. 44 THE CLASS OF 32 AS JUNIORS 4 First Row: R. O ' Dwyer, B. Dike, G. Davis, K. Kennedy. This event celebrated the fifty years of service which the Sisters of Mercy had so willingly given. Much had happened during the preceding years and Mercy Hospital and College had come a long way since their beginning in 1903. On May 15, 1953 the celebration of their success began. A dance took place at a La Jolla Country Club on that Friday evening. Although the weather was a bit on the rainy side, it kept few people away and an active dance, with Mercy as its theme, took place. The next afternoon found Alumnae members attending a Tea in the Main Parlor, where much reunion-making took place. The cake made by Mercy Hospital served over 300 people. Everyone had a wonderful time just talking and saying, Oh! 1 haven ' t seen you since we were in school; are you married, what are you doing now? At five o ' clock that afternoon. Benediction was held in the chapel. Alumnae and students made up the choir. After this, a dinner followed in the College Auditorium. The Student Body put on a skit and modeled uniforms from previous years. President Eisenhower had sent a telegram informing them of his regrets that he was unable to attend the Celebration. Many compliments went to Mrs. Ruth Murphy, Chairman of the Dinner. On Sunday morning a Pontifical Mass at St. Joseph ' s Cathedral brought a highlighting climax to the Jubilee Celebration. The singing was done by Mercy students and Seminarians under the direction of Reverend J. Vincent Sullivan. The Sermon was presented by His Excellency Charles F. Buddy D, D. The Golden Jubilee was brought to an end that afternoon at the College when the students presented The Cavalcade of Mercy College. In fifty years of grow- ing, they modeled six different uniforms with appropriate songs of the period. The Jubilee Celebration reflected the interest in our Alma Mater.
