The group, composed of ten girls on the varsity squad and two sub- stitutes, plan and present special skits for pep rallies and cheer the team on at the games. Every year an award is given to the girl who has done the most for the squad and the school. Y, -,4L-- A One of the most energetic and popular groups around school is the majorettes. Under the direction of Mr. Jennings, sen- sational performances and routines are presented at the pep rallies, band concerts, football games, community parades, and the athletic ban- quet. The girls spend long hours, twirling and marching to perfect their skills. Each year the baton twirlers and their leads are selected through competitive tryouts. Without a doubt, these carefully chosen girls, supported by school spirit, are among the best morale boosters of M, H, S. MAJORETTE Left to right: J. Lowe, M. Jones, E. Kohn, A. Boushell, R. The Merchantville football team began the season as a group of boys harn- pered by inexperience and compar- ative physical smallness. Despite these handicaps, the boys worked hard at football camp in order to build a strong and successful team. The season's opener with Glassboro resulted in our being defeated by a heartbreaking score of 7-6. Our next two games also brought infamy down- upon us, for we lost to our arch-rival FOOT Moorestown, 6-0, and to Haddon- field, 7-O. We were finding our in- experienced and our scanty teamwork a definite hindrance to our offense. We had been improving weekly, how- ever, and we gave Haddon Heights a good battle the next Saturday, even though we lost 18-6. We would have made an even better showing if in- juries had not been inflicted upon our linemen John McCoy, Chuck Schank, and halfback Harold Davis. Ray Watson and Ken Freidel proved them- selves valuable assets to the club in this game. Their spirits bolstered, the Mer- chantville disciples of deception went out the following Saturday and won their first game of the season, de- feating Woodrow Wilson, l2-0. Cen- ter Leon Lutz fought hard to bring his team out ahead. First row: D. Hatle, C. Schank, K. Freidel, R. Purves, L. Lutz, R. Brown. Second row: L. Lewin, W. Warren, W. Ball, W. Holloway, M. This trouncing did not darken the Merchants' spirits, for they bounced back and beat Lower Regional, 18-O, with fullback Walter Ball, tackle Bill Anderson, and quarterback Richard Brown leading the way. In the next game, end Richard Purves caught his second and third touch- down passes of the season as we eked out a heart-throbbing 20-19 win over St. Joseph. Charlie Mooney also scored, and Bill Walker's timely extra-point kicking provided the margin of victory. Due credit must also be given tackle Chuck Deffler and co-captain Don DeGregorio, whose outstanding play made victory pos- sible. Managers: E. Eichfeld, W. Gill, P. Stef- fanini, M. Varbalow. The annual Thanksgiving Day game with Carrrden Catholic was a bitter disappointment. No match for the onrushing Camden giants, our boys found themselves on the short end of a 33-12 score when the dust clear- ed and the final gun sounded. Our touchdowns were scored by Willie Holloway and Walter Ball. The season's final record was three wins and six defeats. First row: D. DeGregorio, J. McCoy, W. Anderson, L. Frank, S. Wedemeyer, R. Our team was, to put it conservatively, not over- laden with victories. But they did provide more than their share of the spills and thrills which are found in this game of basketball. In this day of the basketball giants, our boys were, as usual, compara- tively under-sized. They did, how- ever, possess the indomitable spirit and tenacity which seems to be a Merchantville tradition. One needs only to recall our first game against Coach St. Joseph Qwhich we lost, 61-581 to prove that point! Robert Elder First row: R. Nutt, R. Willis, D: Johnson, L. Probst, R. Rossi.
