The Siudenl Council is one of lhe mosl highly valued organizalions in ihe school and affords an excelleni example of democracy al worlc. The members ol ihe Council are sludenis elecled from each class in lhe high school. ln ihe lhree lower classes one represenlaiive and one allernaie are elecled from each homeroom, while in lhe senior class lwo represenlalives and 'rwo aliernales are chosen from lheir respeciive homerooms. The presidenl oi lhe Council is elecled by lhe direcl' vole oi lhe eniire siudeni body. This year as in ihe pasl, ihe Council, wilh Mr. Haines as adviser, has worlced wilh lhe iaculiy in mainlaining high slandards in all mailers of general conducl and in lhe use of school buildings and properiy. Financial aid has been given 'ro many worlhy organizaiions and proiecis in ihe school. Through lhe use of funds received from ihe Council, 'rhe Biology Club has been able io conlinue lhe landscaping ol ihe grounds al lhe froni of 'rhe school, The Council also made a generous conlribuliorl iowards lhe suppori of ihe French School adopied by 'rhe Tri-l-li. Many of l'he ouislanding assembly programs presenied lhis year have been obiained for ihe school by ihe Council. This line organizalion has also sponsored informal dances as well as 'lhe May Prom wilh Hs beauliful coronalion oi +he May Queen. During ihe iirsl semesler ihe Council formulaled a new consliiuiion which was adopled by a maiorily vole of lhe Merchanlville High School sludenls. Each year, as soon as +he resulis of lhe mid-year examinalions are lcnown, Miss Gronelc, sponsor of lhe Honor Sociely, presenrs lo The facully a lisl of all seniors and iuniors who have an average of G or above. Teachers who have worlced wilh fhese sludenls Then rale fhem for characler, leadership, and service. Only fifleen per cenl of each class may become members of The Honor Sociefy. The seniors chosen for membership in The Honor Sociely lhis year are Naomi Beer, Ronald Benlzley, Virginia Budd, Mildred Dursl, Doris Palmer, Helma Roclc, Barbara Srraub, and Marian Woodruff. The members selecred from +he junior class are Audrey Browning, Janer Broolcs, Anne Burgoyne, Jean Burgoyne, Shirley Bufler, Norman Copsefla, Helen Knowles, Carl Lachmulh, Jean Lafferly, Margarer Macpherson, Genevieve McGurlc, Mary Merlsock, Joan Mooney, Joan Pellz, Geraldine Pharis, Jean Ricords, Calherine Sfannard, Nancy Sieel, Warren Sfevens, Shirley Weidner, and Dorolhy Wesi. From This organizalion come srudenfs who perform many 'Fine services for 'lhe school. Among fhem, we hope, will be found many of 'rhe fufure leaders of our couniry.
