HEEUHU STAFF The Record started off with a crash -of breaking glass! lt seems the table in the Board Room has a glass top, and it would not stand the Weight of our Staff. However, after this occident things went smoothly, except for problems of short- ages and the need to conserve at every point. We hope we have overcome our difficulties and can present you with a book that is comparable with those of previous years. We feel thot several things could be improved, but then . . . We proffer our sincerest thanks to Miss Ramsussen and to Mr. Dippel who so unseltishly gave both time and effort to make this publication a flying success. - ,df Activities: Tornlinson, Sclieilen, Assenheimer, Mathews, Art: Tsombon, Ford, Lorrirnore, Archdeocon. This Society is different than others in several respects. First, the members do not voluntarily join, but are invited to do so by the faculty. All pupils in the upper third of their class in the junior and senior years are eligible, but of this list not more than fifteen percent of the Iunior Class and fifteen percent of the Senior Class will become members. The members are chosen for their excellence in four things: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The Honor Society also differs from other clubs in that it does not have regular meetings and only a few activities. Its most important event is its initiation service, an impressive assembly program, in which the new members take their oath. Its other activity is ushering at the Baccalaureate and Graduation Exercises. This Club is under the able leadership of Miss Gronek. 46 First Row: P. Engle, I. Koenig, E. Paul, R. Riley, I. First, it is the group which settles and corrects the vital student prob- lems that arise during the year. Second, it sponsors the Student Association, that organization which provides the students with special assemblies, afternoon dances, and reduced prices for athletic tickets. The formal dance in May, given by the Student Council, has a preferential price for Student Asso- ciation members. The Council helps to foster school spirit, brings greater cooperation between students and teachers, and seeks in every way to improve the inner workings of Merchantville High School. 47 MMM -'Ein DNF' 'S' First Row D Taylor E Gillam W Hampton M Spak H ones Second Row I. MUNITUH STAFF The Monitor Staff together with Mr. Herritt its advisor had a job on its hands when it took to remodeling the school s system of passing through the halls. ln designating certain stairways up and others down and establish- ing one-Way halls and passing on the left, the staff Was at first thought to be playing jokes on the bewildered student body. Many a student spent some time retracing his steps before completely comprehending the technique ot the new system. After seeing the plan in operation over a period of time, its oddities were seen to be for a purpose. Although most students Walked farther to get to their classes, they reached them in a more orderly fashion, and sometimes more quickly, than by the old method of keep to the right, pass in the center. 48 'fl' -by ' E Mg W g,ll4F TU FLY UH NUT TU PLY First Row: I, Mathews, R. UHEHESTHA No one organization added more to the pleasure of the entire student body than the orchestra. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Frick, the group was on hand to add charm to a variety ot occasions. Arousing enthusiasm in assembly programs with its peppy marches, the orchestra gained a great deal of popu- larity. At the senior play, the group furnished line entertainment between the acts. ln its spring concert, two oi the well-known selections which it played were themes from Tschaikowskys Piano Concerto and Beethovens Third Symphony. The orchestra began rehearsals in September, continuing twice a week all year, playing tor all functions until the last senior had marched out ot the auditorium from the Baccalaureate service. 58 WS Sl illli - lill Ullil ' iii! liilii lil dlil iiiD Clil 1 fsck gt ! Then there were the school assemblies, sprng concert, Memorial Day parade, and last of all the Graduation exercises. Two numbers in this years concert we enjoyed particularly were the Russian Sailors' Dance and the Village Band. The latter was a number in which the members did everything that they should not have done. They came in late, propped their legs on chairs, played sour notes and thus produced a typical village band. ln addition, this year, the Band gave its services to patriotic parades, flag raising, and also sponsored a dance and lloor show. 59 U ' ilfluf t 'lljlf ' ni: SPORT REPRESENTATIVES Edward M1e-rsch Baseball Ruth Rohm SWIIIIIIIIDQ lean Wentlmg Basketball Paul Engle Basketball lean Black Basketball Iack1e Lanchs Hockey Karl Rohm Football 1 1 1 1 1 1 CWWQQ Q 1 ..Q it BEAM l Q X, lg L1 XXX G I V0 : 791177 7 3' T' -i T V y ' I x fx G ' Q WWIIWHW II f ' P-Q N-mug u.-an wl- LOIS Lees Left wmg lean Black Rlght fullback Ida Koemg Left halfback Iackle Landls Center forward Peg Chapman Rxght wmg Iecm Wentllng Center halfback IGCk1e Horner Left 1ns1de 62 I t 5 Q ,? :.', N H 'K ,..- 1 ..,. ci Mg 75 + -' Q My . Through the allied efforts of 20 spirited mermaids, the team expects to launch successful second, third, fourth, and fifth offenses against Audubon, Hallahan, Haddon Heights, respectively. BASKETBALL This year the Merchants enjoyed another fine season which resulted in winning everything but the State Champion- ship. The boys proudly boast ten straight in the South Iersey League. They also stake claims on the South lersey Group Three Championship for the second consecutive year, and on a new title which was originated this year+Camden County Champions. Spectators witnessed the most thrilling game of the year as we conquered Collingswood in two overtime periods. Outclassed in the upstate finals, everyone gave his all, but lost the game to a fine quintet from Cliffside Park. Our team deserves much credit this year. They played in cold gyms and had no private busses as have had the teams of other years. Teamwork was the keynote, and we found everyone contributing equally in scoring honors. This team shows clearly the result of Mr. Elders fine coaching. His strategy and training won 25 games and lost 5. 71 M. The remaining positions Will be filled by last year's Hsubs : Bruce Seaton, Dick Reed, Harold Ansink, lohn Schimpt, and lim Sparks. A few newcomers are pressing the veterans for their jobs, and they have looked like good material to date. The most prominent have been lim Alles, lim Montana, Charles Papaycik, Bud Haines, and Bill Hinkson. Despite the ban on travel, an eight game schedule has been arranged. More games may be added to this list, and so the outlook is bright for a fine, full baseball season. This class, under the able leadership of Mr. lablonski, was begun in 1941. Students are taught to interpret blueprints, and, also, to draw them. This training is very helpful in obtaining positions in essential industry. 79 HAUIU First Row: Charles Bickhart, Charles Langner, Leon Rubin. Second Row: Donald Beck, Mr. Holtz, Robert Smiley. A course in basic radio theory and code practice was begun in November, 1942 to give boys and girls of high school age a background in the fundamen- tals of radio. Due to the rapid depleting of the ranks of radiomen and the extensive need for individuals with radio training, both in the armed services and in civilian positions, the federal government has urged that some such training program be offered to high school pupils. This class Was held on Monday and Wednesday evenings in the physics laboratory at the High School with an enrollment of about fifteen students. The instruction was begun by Mr. Thomas Flythe of the RCA Manufacturing Com- pany, Who was forced to leave because of the press of business. Mr. Robert Holtz then took over the Work. While the course has no definite goal, an attempt has been made to carry the students as rapidly as possible through a course in radio fundamentals. 80 First Row: C. Haddon, P. Barlow, G. Zane, D. PHE-FLIGHT CLASS ln October, 1942, the inaugural meeting of the pre-flight class was held. lt was off to a brilliant start under Miss Miriam Keim's competent leadership. After gliding through the romantic history of aviation, the boys finally flew into the thick of the course. With so many technical terms floating in their heads, the students bewildered their friends when they discussed their homework. At the time Mr. Bishop took over, after Miss Keim left, aeronautical knowledge was flying fast and furious. The object of the pre-flight class was to help prepare students, who had a leaning toward the field of aviation, to enter either some phase of airplane work or else the Army or Navy Air Force. ln a world where aviation is so increasingly important, Merchantville High School has made a very important step forward in preparing its students for the future. 81 lane Gilman, Berenice Walker, Elizabeth Blazier, Birdine Mclfeever, Mrs. Pentz, Catherine Corbett, Claire Torbert, Caroline Hindsley. VULUNTEEH HUSPITAL EURPS lf Uncle Sam were to turn his eyes toward Merchantville High after three o'clock on any school day, he would see a band of enthusiastic young Women climb into the station Wagon of the West Iersey Homeopathic Hospital--ready to go oft for their war service of the day. These girls are members of the Volunteer Hospital Corps, who report on their own time once or twice o week to help with hospital chores. The idea for the V. H. C. found its beginning in Mr. Kratzer's fertile brain and in the urge of our younger Women to do something for their country. After conferences at the Hospital and a talk to the girls by the Director of Nurses, organization got under Way-twelve girls for each day with a captain to guide them. The response was so enthusiastic that the V. H. C. started its work with the new year. From four in the afternoon until seven or eight at night on school days, and at various other times during the Week end, members of the V. H. C. report to the hospital and work in the wards to help the nurses. Many of the girls have missed very little time, and the total of hours given to this patriotic service has already totaled several thousands. 82 Karl Alminde, Robert Thomas, William Smith, George Zane, Mr. Iablonski, Frank Spuhler, PHE-INDUETIUN METAL Our new metal shop celebrates its first birthday this year. The course in metal shop includes many forms of metal work such as, sand casting with brass and aluminum, art metal and jewelry, Wrought iron, sheet metal, and machine shop Work. In cooperation with the Government program ot Victory Corps in High Schools, a course was given in Pre-Induction Shop Work. This course aims to supplement the development ot skills with related lectures and when possible makes visits to industry to see the actual performance of the theory learned at school. 83 Francis Whalen, Thomas Thorne, Herbert Henney, Charles Williams, Roman Mochernuk. Iack Kramer, Iames Alles, Lee Stiles, Ernest Chappelle, Stewart Bakley, Robert Horner, Mr. Metzgar. PHE-INDUETIUN WUUII The Woodworking department has revised its course to conform with the official pre-induction training course jointlv prepared bv the War'Department and the United States Office of Education. The objective of this course is thoroughness in instruction. The aims are: Development of skill in the use of hand tools: a knowledge of procedure and construction processes, and a knowledge of the qualities and characteristics of materials. All High School shop classes are required to take this course. About one- third of this shop period is devoted to lecture, demonstration, discussion, and tests, and two-thirds to shop exercises at the bench. Seventy-five percent 'of the bench work is constructing model planes for use in the Army and Navy Air- craft Schools. This project develops exceptional skill in the use of hand tools. 84 ,Sinn V Harry Holt, William Hampton, Rollo Baker, Mr. Calvert, Iohn Hicks, Ralph Hose, Charles Wheeler, Iohn Iacobs, Ross Billig, Donald Beck, Iarnes Tinney, George Richards, Charles Bickhart, Charles Haddon. PHE-INDUETIUN PHYSICS The pre-induction physics class, a newly arranged course, prepares senior boys for entrance into the Army, As requested by our Government, the course emphasizes two phases of physics. Mechanics is stressed during the first semester, While electricity and its related fields, such as radio and telegraphy, are studied during the second part of the year. The theory that is learned through lecture is put into practice through actual experimentation. 85 WEAHEH5 UF THE M Voorheee Ander '1 W1111a1n Arn on Cora AiQen11e11ner Ro11o1 Baker I1 Hoes B111 a Iean B1aC1x 1 L1T1G1B 1 1e11 1J'1araare1C11 1 '1 1 1 ood Dow olleen Ldwaras Pa111 1.na1e Dona1d L x ar Ld ard F sc G1ona Goet 1111: Ha11en V 1111an1 1na11 Iack Hann Benne11H111 161013 n Horner Harold Ionc lda Koen a Iaca11e11ne1and Lo1 Lee Mary 1 agov a Iohnl McKenna Edv ard MIGTSC1' DOTC111 131a ket Frames Pu1re11 Helen Remer RaC11ae1R1r ra CT 1?ona1d 1?11ex C1OY1fI Roeerkem Bruce Seato 1a1neQ Qnark Constance S eenex Evelyn T11ton W1111a1n Warren Iane M1e11s 1ean VX enthrg Gordon We 1 Roberi Wex aand Edvm rd Yo Ro1Uer1Yo11na li I1 ,, 'so1 S i V I - v I 1 EJ V1 J IT .7 V ' ' Q 1' Q J1 ' o 19 1 , A , .arf na.
