The new student is about to participate in Mercershurgis long-standing Heritage of Quality. He is a boy about to be a man, about to become the well-rounded individual this heritage produces. Perhaps nowhere else do these qualities blend so well into the everyday life of the student as in the varied extra-curricular activities of the school. 19

CHARLES S. TIPPETTS Headmaster an important objective, as Mercersburg boys are planning for successful experience in the colleges and universities of most rigorous standards. Physical health and good health habits are fostered by an extensive and diversified program of sports and recreation in which every boy has a part. The development of good work hahits is essen- tial for the success the ltlercershurg boy expects to achieve. Development of leisure time interests provides much by way of satisfaction and a sense of personal adequacy. A wide range of opportu- nities is offered for the acquiring of appreciations and creative expression in literature, music, dra- matics, and art. Social responsibility for community living is developed by every phase of campus and dormi- tory lifeg training for leadership is a major pur- pose in student participation in the direction of school activities. Mercersburg fosters an appreciation of what it means to be an American boy, for in every aspect of school life there is a definite purpose to give the Mercersburg boy a knowledge and under- standing of the development of the institutions which are our fortunate American heritage. But what of Mercersburg's future? What are the plans for building on this heritage of quality? In the winter and spring of 1958-59 the Board of Regents of the Mercersburg Academy began to examine plans for improving the facilities of the school. They engaged J. Alfred Hamme and Associates, an architectural-engineering firm to draw up an over-all plan for this improvement. Just as clothes and automobiles show the attrition of years, so do buildings and other physical equipment. Fireproof stairways were built in Keil Hall, '88, and the gymnasium in the summer of 1959. On Alumni Day, October 17, 1959, an assem- blage of notables laid the cornerstone for a new dormitory. This dormitory is the gift of Edward E. Ford of the Class of 1912, whose interest in his old school and its headmaster, his classmate, prompted him to sponsor better living quarters for 104 boys. This is the first step in a plan to provide an auditorium building, an addition to the gymnasium, and renovation of Main Hall Annex. The immediate financial goal in this program is 3l,000,000, and the long-range goal is 81,500,000 This latter figure will carry out the physical building projects and provide some endowment for the betterment of faculty salaries. All of these aims or goals are a part of the plan to build on the Mercersburg heritage so that the boy of tomorrow, who has been heir to much. may enjoy the advantages of a greater school. The management of this campaign is under the direction of Josiah W. Pritchard. Mercersburg '25, who is giving a great part of his time as general campaign chairman. Mr. David Chapman of the faculty heads the project as director of developmentg the fund-raising counsel of Ketcham and Company directs the effort. Its representative has been J. Lloyd Mahony. This book proposes to show the Mercersburg of today, built on a great past and looking for- ward to an even greater future. 18
