.la es clk r -I-ires when school opened in the fall. a familiar figure was missing from The lVlercershurg: Acade- my scene: James l.iving1lon Vlvalker. steward. no longer was occupying his chair in the little ollice hehind the Keil Hall dining room. After 57 years as a memher ol' the stall of the school he had retired and was enjoying: a much deserved rest. lilercershurg lroys all over the world constantly inquire ahont Mr. Walker. for he served the school longer than ally other man or woman. and his career encompassed the greater part of the life of the institution as a preparatory school. ln the 57 years of his stewardship plus his days as a student in this institution he came to know almost every hoy who ever came to Mercershurg for pre-college work. Mr. Walker was a great friend to the working lmoys. his lwoys. no matter how sharply he had to speak to them at times. He was also a great friend of the John Marshall l.iterary Society, and this despite his insistance that he was always neutral in the inter-society rivalry. He was a memher of Nlarshall in his student days and somehow always looked a shade more pleased with a Marshall victory than an Irving one. During the Walker tenure the Academy kitchen was enlarged to its present condition to provide ellieienlly for the ever-hungry students. Buying the provisions and overseeing the working hoys. he managed the kitchen department through two world wars and the regimes of three headmasters, Ur. lrvine. Dr. Edwards. and Dr. Tippetts. He managed hanquets. dinners. teas. receptions, and refreshments at dances. Un the occasions when dances were held in Keil llall. late at night. after the hall. he could he seen standing in the middle ol the dining room. like a captain on the hridge. directing the setting up ol talwles for the next IIl0I'lllIlfI.S hreakfast. This was typical of the way he handled his important joh. l or many years Nlr. Walker nas a favorite guest at regional alumni dinners. for he had a phenomenal memory and a wealth of reminiscent stories. Regularly he attended the annual Her- cershurg dinner in l'hiladelphia the night hefore the l'enn Relays. In IQI36 that dinner was espe- cially dedicated to his honor and in appreciation for his interest. leadership. and guidance of the scholarship hoys of the school. We congratulate james L. Walker on his long, useful. and laithlul service to ltlereershurg and wish him a happy and pleasant retirement.
