Hlstor of the Class of l952 September 7 1948 marked a great moment in our lowly lnes because at long last vue were freshmen' We had begun that all important phase of education where anything and everything can happen fand usually doesj To us becoming freshmen meant more than just entering high school it meant that vse were grown up We could do and say things with the feeling that we were no longer inferior elementary children but were vsell on the way to becoming young men and vsomen who could be depended upon to accept the responsibilities which come to a high school student Gradually however our feeling of elation subsided and we were brought back to earth with a bang' Our so called brotherly upperclassmen lost no time in making clear the fact that ours was an almost hopeless cause that we had a place and they meant to see that we stayed in it Those first few weeks were yery dis couraging but we struggled through them and managed to survne Our patience and fortitude were sorely tried on initiation day But vse thrust out our chests lifted our chins and smiled bravely in an effort to preserve our di nity Before long we had the occasion to display our yarious talents and athletic abilities Vee participated ln the Christmas Cantata and had great pride in the prospect of taking part in the colorful operetta Don Alonsos Treasure which was a huge success There was also the declamation contest under the superusion We were happy when school closed that summer not only because it meant three whole months of vacation but because in the coming fall we would make a step to an eyen higher level by becoming sophomores September 6 1949 Our sophomore year began in room 3 with Mr Malloy who was a new member of the faculty as our homeroom teacher But the school year had hardly begun when Mr Malloy left us and was replaced by Mr Dans As sophomores we lost our shyness and began to act like high school students usually do Doing what we pleased if and when we could get avsay vuth II Wfe looked down our noses at the freshmen and hoped 1nwardly that we hadn t been that dumb and awkward in our freshmen days Vile longed for the day when we could display our authority by initiating those stupid creatures But alas' Mr Keim informed us that the old custom of initiation day was being discontinued and our only means of persecutlng those dear souls would be in the form of an assembly put on by them with refreshments for both classes afterwards As ln our freshmen year some of us took part in various sports We sopho mores were proud to have four of our boys make the varsity basketball team Also seven of our girls made the girls basketball team We were quite active that year participating in the Christmas Cantata and some of our more talented members of the class had leadlng roles in the operetta The I'orest Prince Thirteen of our group journeyed to Xwaynesboro to lend their voices to the Franklin County Music Festival As our sophomore assembly the class showed two films The Army Navy Game of 1947 and The Fleet That Came to Stay September 5 1950 found us again roaming the halls of M H S greeting our old classmates some of whom we hadn t seen the vshole three months of yacation We regarded each other with more respect for now we were upperclassmen And yust let anyone try to push us around novs' This year was spent ln room 4 under the patient supervision of Mr Hoch Page 28 O - u n ' V A I 1 1 ' , , r -' -1 1 I ' ' 1 5 ,. , , , , , .
