hip cq«£ Wow® Mercer Students and faculty once again feel at home The Georgia Baptist Convention was held from November 9 11. During the meeting in Savan- nah, the Ga. Baptists affirmed their faith in Mercer University and proudly wore buttons that said, I am Mercer proud, It seems that the stigma has finally been lifted from Mercer's name. Between the time the pam phlet came out and the date of the Convention, a Jot ol things were done to lift the morale of the slu dents. Walter Shurden and Kent Anglin spoke a word of encouragement to everyone on October 21 1987. Dr Anglin addressed the meaning of fund mentalism to help the students better grasp wha was occurring around them Also, Dr. Godsey could often be seen givin; words of encouragement to the student body B assured everyone that the events would turn ii favor of Mercer — fortunately he was right. After the success at the Convention, there, then was a Welcome Home Dr Godsey rally in th quadrangle Once again, school spirit rose as h gave words of encouragement and thanks, it look like we have all come home

In response to Roberts' insistence that only Christians should hold admirvs tralive or teachings positions. Godsey said that such a policy would be of excessive limitation. He expressed that the university should have a strong commitment to the selection of quality faculty and that religious affiliation is not the only criterion for faculty members. He described such a policy as monolithic and unilateral. and said that students need to study with people who have a different point of view. The richness and strength of the faculty is a reflection of its diversity, he said. Godsey stated that the university has no intention of attacking Roberts and characterized Roberts letter as a vicious assault on the university. Godsey staled that the university has no interest in withdrawing from the GBC. and expressed that Mercer wants to be a cooperative partner with the convention. In talking with the student newspaper. Godsey said that the student press sometimes gets the administration in trouble, but that he upholds editorial freedom and has favored restraints only in terms of decency and taste (published by the permission of The Mercer Cluster ) 9
