If you have attended one recently, did ii ever occur to you to wonder at all the man hours that were put into making the production work? Here at Mercer University there are many theatrical productions put on during the school year The work that goes on behind the stage is a staggering amount The workers behind the scenes are a mixture of work-study stu- dents and volunteers Often, the actors themselves assist back stage, The workers have to work long and often late hours on jobs dealing with costuming, lighting, and set design. Many times these hours of difficult work go unappreciated and unno- deed. The work schedule For these jobs during the preparation for a performance is extremely demanding, They work from 2:00 p m-5:00 p.m on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fri- days On Wednesdays and Saturdays the work load is from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, and from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. At least three times a year, a group of dedicated, behind the scenes workers assist in creating a production. The work they do until the wee hours is an attempt to produce a professional show, and to gratify the audience. Mow that you are aware of the demands placed on a backstage worker, take the time to appreciate the quality of their work It is time for the audience to allow the workers to come downstage and take their bows. IMnnily WiVAViVl In the past year .Mercer's student population took a 10% leap. This increase was one of the largest increases in the school's history Are there any specific reasons for this sudden In crease? Well, one reason could be the new engi- neering school. After three years of being in existence, it is really beginning to get on its feet. But, as well as the increase in engineering students, there has been a rise in the liberal arts school. What is the reason for its growth? The Admissions Office of Mercer University had some definite ideas about the new situation. Mer cer is gutckly becoming a force to be reckoned with. In the October issue of CI.S. News and World Reports, MG is listed as one of the lop schools in the country. We have a strong aca- demic staff, as well as a strong administration and Board of Trustees. For these reasons, Mer- cer is on the move In order to promote the college. Admissions has expanded their recruiting boundaries. In- stead of concentrating on Georgia and Florida, recruiters are going up north as far as Maryland, and out west as far as Texas. David Luckie, Director of Admissions, be- lieves the Increase in student population will continue if: 1. Quality recruiting continues. 2. the administration remains strong, and 3, there is a continuing effort to cultivate reasons for students to remain at Mercer As Mercerians sit back and survey their grow- ing numbers: pride should be taken in the fact that the University is growing stronger each year, The rise in the number of students is in- deed an indication that Mercer is a force to be reckoned with!! $ If you were a student returning to Mercer in 1987, you probably noticed the campus was undergoing several changes Over the summer, the new tennis courts were torn up. In their place, a new library will be built. On Friday, October 9, 1987. the official groundbreaking for the new addition to our campus was held. The projection for the completion of the library has been set at 18 months. Aside from the new tennis courts and the new library, there is another new addition to Mercer University, in 1986, the new building for Mercer's School of Engineer ing was officially Opened. The school has actually been functioning for three years, but the new complex was not open until '86. The engineering students are very proud of their building, especially since they will no longer be bused across town for classes. One Iasi addition to our campus has been beneficial to all members of the MU family. The Trust Company Bank of Georgia placed an Avail 24 hour banker on campus Students will no longer have to trek across town for quick money. It is now conveniently at their disposal While Mercer is growing, the new additions are work- ing to improve the campus' image. Remember to support your school as it takes on the appearance of something new under the sun 7 by Karon Jacobs and Ruby Fowler President R. Kilby Godsey said that the university will not compro- mise academic integrity and religious freedom and affirmed that Mercer is a Baptist university in a pfess conference held Monday. October 12. 1987 The statement to the press was prompted by the circulation of a letter in which Lee Roberts, a member of Eastside Baptist Church of Marietta, alleged that filthy language and heresies are being printed by the Mercer University Press, hard liquor is served at official functions, 'lewd cartoons and pornography” are being published in the student newspaper, and that 'widespread student drunkenness exists of campus, The 16-page fetter includes book excerpts, copies of speeches made by President Godsey. articles and advertisements from The Mercer Glister. the student newspaper, and reproductions of photographs printed in Playboy magazine. The letter urges readers to write or call Godsey board of trustees asking them to approve the right of the Georgia Baptist Convention Nominating Committee to make free and unrestricted nominations to trustee positions at Mercer Copies of the tetter have been sent to Baptists pastors, members of the Board of Trustees, members of the faculty, and parents of students. Godsey stated that Roberts' letter is part of a plan to control the university: It is his desire that the Georgia Baptist Convention should nominate and elect all of our trustees. He wants to control the election of Trustees so that tie cam control what is taught and: can control the selection of faculty who teach, the textbooks they use, and the books that we publish.1' He added that political fundamentalist doctrine is contrary to the very essence of a Baptist university and to the heart and soul of Baptists. (cont d on pg. 9) ft ifflmtr© (flutter 8 In response to Roberts' insistence that only Christians should hold admirvs tralive or teachings positions. Godsey said that such a policy would be of excessive limitation. He expressed that the university should have a strong commitment to the selection of quality faculty and that religious affiliation is not the only criterion for faculty members. He described such a policy as monolithic and unilateral. and said that students need to study with people who have a different point of view. The richness and strength of the faculty is a reflection of its diversity, he said. Godsey stated that the university has no intention of attacking Roberts and characterized Roberts letter as a vicious assault on the university. Godsey staled that the university has no interest in withdrawing from the GBC. and expressed that Mercer wants to be a cooperative partner with the convention. In talking with the student newspaper. Godsey said that the student press sometimes gets the administration in trouble, but that he upholds editorial freedom and has favored restraints only in terms of decency and taste (published by the permission of The Mercer Cluster ) 9 hip cq«£ Wow® Mercer Students and faculty once again feel at home The Georgia Baptist Convention was held from November 9 11. During the meeting in Savan- nah, the Ga. Baptists affirmed their faith in Mercer University and proudly wore buttons that said, I am Mercer proud, It seems that the stigma has finally been lifted from Mercer's name. Between the time the pam phlet came out and the date of the Convention, a Jot ol things were done to lift the morale of the slu dents. Walter Shurden and Kent Anglin spoke a word of encouragement to everyone on October 21 1987. Dr Anglin addressed the meaning of fund mentalism to help the students better grasp wha was occurring around them Also, Dr. Godsey could often be seen givin; words of encouragement to the student body B assured everyone that the events would turn ii favor of Mercer — fortunately he was right. After the success at the Convention, there, then was a Welcome Home Dr Godsey rally in th quadrangle Once again, school spirit rose as h gave words of encouragement and thanks, it look like we have all come home What exactly Is the look of the 80‘s? Is It the clothes you wear the car you drive or the bever age you drink? Maybe it is a combination of all of the above Well, at M£J a lot of emphasis is placed on the car you drive The parking lots of Mercer contain everything from SAABs, Porsches. and BMWs, to Volkswagon and pick-up trucks Emphasis is not necessarily placed on the type of automo bile, but on how it expresses your personality- Is this ihe look ol the 80s? Besides looking at cars. Mercer students tty to stay on top of the fashion scene. We all try to make the right choice of a new generation-' MU attenders always have an air of chic about them That characteristic makes other colleges stand up and take notice. The latest clothes fads and hair styles can always be found here When anything new under the sun comes along, you can be sure to find it at Meicer To be a small university, Mercer has many surprising qualities Besides being a great all round school, we have the look of the 80 s 5 !® TJ 1 ' When a young, fresh minded, female Freshman en lets college, she often holds many dreams very dear. This freshman wants fo be paired with the perfect roommate, plus she wants fo create the coolest dorm room. Well, this year 47 young women were shocked when they arrived on campus and found out where they actually lived Due to overcrowding this year, many women had to temporarily live in places other than a dorm room lived in the Infirmary. 16 were placed in rooms with Residence Hall Assistants (who generally live in pri vate rooms), 12 inhabited lounges, and 4 were placed in study rooms. These converted living conditions pro dueed creative decorating and lots of fun It may have seemed like an inconvenience at fust, but the young women adjusted very well WELtOHE TO MrtS-H This unusual situation was due to an increase in student population Flans are being made now to rente dy the problem, Hopefully, we will soon have a place to put all of (he new students. So, the next time you meet an incoming, female freshman: be kind Remember those dreams you held close during that time of your life — during the time when college was something new under the sun. n te Tl io d sf w it li R v it d At Thanksgiving ol 1988, Mercer University will be losing a loved teacher. Tarry Stansfield, who has been teaching here for 40 years, will be leaving It will be with much regret that the students see him go. Mr Stansfield'§ career at Mercer began al most hv accident. Originally from England, he came here 40 years ago to visit a wartime friend, This friend taught at the University. While Mr Stansfield was here, one of the history teachers got married and left for Chicago, So, Mr. Stans field decided to apply for the job The President hired him on trial for one term at 5216.00 per month. He rented a room on Edgewood St for 55.00 per week His sojourn had begun. Mr, Stansfield has taught a variety of subjects since his career began at Mercer. He has I aught every type of history except for American and Georgian, After taking a year off. he returned to teach Advanced Composition, the History of En- glish Literature, and Latin. Once again, he took a year off to complete a book about Spain and Portugal When he returned this time, it was to stay, In 1952 he began to teach Art History and has done so ever since. During his lime here. Mr. Stansfield has done extensive traveling, He has been as far south as Venezuela. knows the Canibbean and Mediterra- nean, has visited Canada Africa, and Europe. Some of his favorite places are the South of France, Italy, and naturally England, After leav- ing our campus, he plans to continue his travels in places he has yet to explore Mercer is losing a valuable asset with the loss of Tony Stansfield. This charming man has been mentor and friend to many students at Mercer University, Often, he has given advice to stu- dents that seems to fit his own lifestyle. 'The best education is self education '' It may never be known how much impact this little bit of strong advice has made, but the speaker will always be remembered as a great friend and a great teacher. This combination of returning players, junior college transfers and freshmen recruits should give the team better depth and this looks like better quali- ty. With a demanding schedule, the Bears will be looking to Seniors Ben Wilson and Junior Tracy Vaughn for team leadership. When the gauntlet was thrown at my feet last spring I willingly picked it up. For 8 months I put my energy and my heart into this challenge At times my efforts were not appreciated. Sometimes I was even scoffed at, But, with the support of talented helpers, I continued on with diligence, You now hold in your hands my challenge, This challenge which was given to me was not only to record the '87 ‘88 year, but to also give you a memory for the future. Hopefully, I have accomplished that purpose. All of this work would not have been possible if it weren't for some very hard workers, Because of Art, George, Julie, Jerry, Mike, Joyce, Kelly, and Ronda this book was made possible, I would also like to thank someone who has become my friend — Gary Blackburn He helped me believe in myself when I thought the challenge was too tough. Thanks Gary There are others out there who gave me support and co operation throughout the past year. Even though these people will remain nameless, they will not be forgotten. Thanks! I now leave to the students of Mercer the 87-88 Cauldron. May you give it your faith and may it reward you, JOO
