None of the three major candidates managed throughout the campaign to stir the hearts of the public. Opposing Jimmy Carter, a Demo- crat from Georgia, was former California Gov- ernor Ronald Reagan, a Republican, and Illi- nois Congressman John Anderson, a Republi- can turned Independent. But by 9:00 p.m. November 4 even before the polls on te West Coast had closed. Presi- dent CarLer had conceded the election to Rea- gan. Now the United States has President Reagan, a former Governor, former actor and former football player. Hts election was appar- ently a protest by Lhe public against big gov- ernment and high taxes. President Reagan promised during bis campaign to cut taxes by 30% in three years and to reduce government regulations on business, a move he expects La increase productivity. Will all this happen? One can only specu- late. But remember that President Carter had promised to balance the budget in three years; yet, despiLe sincere efforts, he was unable to. Perhaps President Reagan has some abilities that President Carter did not; perhaps Reagan will find the public finally wilting to give up some government services in exchange for de- creased taxes. Otherwise the former governor wilt have to renege on his promises or make some very unpopular decisions. Which will happen? Only time will tell. The public has made its statement; iL will be inter- esting to note if the same people are ready to receive less in exchange for giving less. Un- fortunately, this may not be determined until the public makes its next statement, in 1984. 39 Doug Me Loan Sonya Mernmati Bernard Meyer von Bremen Gloria Montgomery Seniors Vicky Moody Dell Moore Jeff Morgan Mark Mosely Anselm Okeke James O'Quinn Richard Panarese Cathy Pascarella Vickie Perdue Kenneth Pittman Kimberly Poole Debora Porter Viola Powell David Quisenherry Sheryl Rabel Alan Raughton 40 Seniors Steve Reed Brenda Roberson Vanessa Rumble Wayne Ryle Frances Samples Carol Sasser Frederick Schiff David Self Eileen Sexton James Sexton Darrin Sherrill Kimberly Shirley 41 Dennis Shouse Steven Simpson Mike Sisk Matt Smith Mercer’s Medical School Throughout the school year, there was the continual sound of construction. Was it a new dorm or sports complex No, it was the Medical School. The Medical School had received a very high priority from President Godsey and the Trustees; so, up it went The building itself was contracted at 4,7 million dollars, and the expense of operating the school was considerably more. Yet Maconites and Georgia Legislators apparently fell that the school was needed to prevent a shortage of doctors in rural areas. The town approved a 7 million dollar bond issue to pair for the building, and the House and Senate of Georgia have consistently supported the school. And if everything proceeds as expected, the school will receive its first class in the winter of 1982, Vickie Smith Debbie Spivev Jeff Strickland Sharon Strozier David Sumrall Rise Swartout Cynthia Taylor Ellen Thompson Cheryl Treadwell Dawn Tonjes Keith Turner Trieia Vaughn Patricia Vinson Lori Weber Daniel Webb Fletcher Whitworth Courtenay Wilson John Wilson Mary West John Winnie John and Lea Witherspoon Steven Wood Barbara Wright 43 Juniors Be It Ever So Humble I ,ife in a dorm room is certainly not l ho envy of -—__ many. With no cooking facilities and only five washing machines for four dormitories, there was indeed a lot to complain about. But the folks ; in student development did try to make things a little more bearable, Kor the third year, residents were allotted two cans of paint from a variety of colors to help personalize their room. Bui the paint only marked the beginning. Bunk beds and lofts sprouted from piles of lumber and curtains ap- peared out of mounds of cloth Paint, lumber and cloth-all used to make it -n| possible to say there's no place like home. er, uh. the dorm ' LVn Adam Janice Atiam Janet Antk'rson Eileen Arnold Mark Ayeock Pebble Ayers Phillip Baker Terry Barnard Sara Jane Beatty Lisa Behling Pat Belcher Barney Bennett Denise Bennett Brail Bibb Essie Biggins Tom Bishop Drake Btvms Margaret Bizzell Juniors Paul Bresk Donna Britt Edwina Bush Fredcnca Carter Joe Chancey Joe Chappie Claire Chason Erie Chiles Henry Clay James Clements Patricia Cobb Craig Cornish Clair Dohn Mmdee Conner Jean Barnhart Erik Elakman Michael Eller Carrie Evans IS Juniors Jeana Floyd Bryan Fobbus Merrill Folsom Andrew Ford Alvin Forlson Cheryl Freeman Cindi God bold Gayle Greene Clayton Hall Susan Hammond Mary Hanley Penny Hannah Albert Harrell Rena Henry Carla Hodges Thomas Holbrook Cynthia Howard Pamela Howard Vivian Howard James Howington Ken Jackson Mary Anne Jackson I 4B Nancy Johnson DeWayne Jones Jean Jones Michelle Jones Paul Joseph Kathryn Kelly Juniors Tncia Kelly Steven Kurth Susan Lame Ronald Lawton Antionette Lee Camilla Lee Fred Lee David Linlz Emily Long Steven Mathcny Amparo Medina Regina Middleton Cary Miller Deborah Mills I .aura Mims Lisa Moss Kathleen O'Hara Roberl Persky Chris Pounds J.A Pruys Wilbur Radford Victor Riden Dean Robinson Kim Rogers Mirv Ruriner Robin Sanders Arthur Schlieper Michael Schultz Mary Ann Sea ley Christopher Shcllnutt 47 Juniors Cheryl Sheppard Mark Snowden Andrea Squixzero Bruce Stanfield Teresa Stanton Teresa Stickles Greg Walling Tim Warren Kent Webb Kevin Wheeler Dense Wilkins Martin Will Annie Wilson Stephen Wood Linda Wynn Civile Ellen Zarzecki Alicia Ziadie Youngblood What’s In A Name In a designer's name there's a whole lot. Once upon a time, the only visible la- beis were the Izod alligator and the Mun- singwear penguin. The first year of the '80’s, however, saw a tremendous rise in the pre.senee of labels Goria Vanderbili became famous by plastering her name and trademarked swan on the dcrricre of all her jeans. The same is true for Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta, and numerous others. The presence of names didn’t stop there. Designers autographed” everyth- ing from prescription glasses to baby jumpsuits. It seemed as if everything could be found with a fashionable name. Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? Not in the '80’s. It would have to be autographed to have a greater scent. In 1974 the lota Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha was established at Mercer. The aims of our noble fraternity are manly deeds, schol- arship. and love for all mankind. Alpha Phi Alpha began an interesting year with the initiation of five young men in fall quarter. On October 31, 1980 the brothers sponsored a Halloween Carnival at the Union ville Elementary School. In January we held our Sixth Annual Miss Black and Gold Pageant and Sweetheart Coronation. Miss Ange- line Williams was crowned Ms, Black and Gold 1980-81, and Ms. Avia Lockett was selected as our Sweetheart of the Year, Ms. Iota Eta Chapter. The team’s prob- lems were the same as in previous years-lack of unity, commitment, and interest, as well as injur- ies and inexperience. Despite this. Coach Dana Robinson is commit- ted to building a successful soccer program at Mercer, and will continue to display his dedica- tion. 156 57 Dnrictt Talbou, Terry Teague, Brad Bibb, Rodney Mosley, Kenny Daugherty (Grad. Austin, Texas 159 160 Mercer University’s Bears compiled a record of 18-12 Lhis year, including a TAAC championship and a firsl-ever trip to the NCAA playoffs. The team went 10-4 in the TAAC, beating Hous- ton-Baptist University 72-67 to win the championship and gam a berth in the NCAA playoffs. It was there that the Bears lost to Arkansas by only six points, proving lo many that Mercer's basketball team is strong, and dedi- cated to a winning program. The road to such a great achieve- ment was highlighted by many indi- vidual leaders and their accomplish- ments. Tony Gattis led the team in scoring with 16.2 points per game., at the same time being a key rebound man. He was also named MVP of the TAAC tournament. Benton Wade was the leading reboundcr, while also sup- porting a 15.3 point average. Darlez Talbott was invaluable to the team, providing the leadership and spark as he had done throughout his career. He had 119 assists. Eddie Jones and Morris Thompson were the other two starters, providing fine play during the season. The bench was led by Terry Teague, Rick Walker. Rodney Mosley, and Travis Johnson. If 1980-81 is any indication, expect good Mercer basketball in the future. 161 I 162 Coming off a 29-fi season in which the Teddy- bears went to the AlAW National Tournament, expectations were high for the 1980-81 season. But the unexpected loss of a coach, and some transfers, hurt the girls' chances, and they therefore only managed an average season. Their final record was 15-11, hut that included two long losing streaks. Coach Ed Nixon did bring home big wins over Clemson (twice), Flor- ida State, and Valdosta State, among others. Vivian Humphrey was the team leader, sup- porting a 24,7 point average, and claiming many individual honors. Kathy Singletary and Emma Mumphrey were valuable, with the many points and rebounds they made. Floor leader Edna Massey contributed 138 assists, Gloria Stewart. Robbi Pippinger, Lenora Freeman. Frederica Carter, Jami Gil Its, and Carol Smith also all helped the team in various ways. There are several question marks regarding next years' team, and a big pair of shoes to fill with the loss of Vivian Humphrey, With the win- ning tradition the Teddybears have, it is hoped that they can once again gain the spotlight they once held. That record included 19 wins 11 home, 19 wins on the road, and a TAAC Tournament championship. Having won the tournament by beating Georgia Southern twice and Hard in-Simmons once, the Bears expected a bid to the NCAA playoffs. They disappointedly did not get that., but went on to win their Iasi six games of the year. Big wins during the season came over powerhouses Florida State, Georgia Southern, and Valdosta Stale. The Bears played but were not able to defeat South Carolina and Alabama. With one of the best teams in the country, the Bears naturally had Fine hitting and pitching. There were seven players who hit over ,300, including Tim Smith who hit a superb .408, He also led the team in homeruns with 14 a new Mercer record), hits (82), and slugging average. Jack Poo) led the team in RRls with 69 Other team hitting leaders were Dave Jedneski, Mike Montgomery Frank Millerd. Wayne Ryle, and Lawrence Walter The pitching staff supported one of the best ERA? in the coun- try. a 3.36 mark. Senior Dan Fitzsimmons, who should be anyone's Comeback Player of the Year after fighting a serious battle with cancer, had a 2,73 ERA, with 9 wins and 3 losses. His pitching ability is of major league calibre, Tun Werkin turned in another fine season, going 5-1 with a 2.78 ERA. Scott Barnhouse was steady at 8-6, 3,02, Most relief work came from Joe Childs, Randv Perry, and Steve Horne Mercer turning in winning baseball teams has become common- place at the school, and the 1981 squad was no exception. This marked the seventh consecutive season m which the Bears have won over 30 games. Coach Barry Myers deserves much credit for fielding such fine teams year in and year out. There is not doubt that he can win consistently, but still his big goal is to take a team to the NCAA playoffs. Maybe '82 will be the year 167 Intramurals 170 172 m 177 It's a circus, a real zoo.
